As far as strange sonic pairings go, sometimes musical opposites really do attract — just ask Elton John and Eminem, Kanye West and Bon Iver, or Aerosmith and Run DMC, among many others. Now, possibly the next artistic convergence to to join the odd collaborations ranks could be Zhu and Tame Impala, as they’re rumored to have linked up for an upcoming project. This set of rumors reignited speculation that first began circulating on the internet in late 2017.
Zhu took to Twitter to fan the flames, leaving a perfectly nondescript message that will either leave fans scratching their heads, or salivating for a first listen. If this materializes, will Zhu’s enigmatic electro-noir style complement Tame Impala‘s buzzing psychedelic rock fare? Only time will tell, though all signs point to a hit waiting to happen. Fingers crossed.
It was first rumored that ZHU and Ekali were teaming up for a single a few months ago when a new track started to appear in both of the artist’s sets. It was unlike anything either had done solo, and before long the rumors were in fact confirmed by Ekali. Today the track was uploaded
2017’s holiday season is a gift that keeps on giving. OWSLA announced on Twitter that Ekali and ZHU’s long awaited collaboration has not only been released, but it is available for free download.
The track, titled “Blame,” opens with characteristically ZHU vocals and pulsing synths as accents. An elaborate collection of chords roll into a delicate yet commanding drop taking the listener through a sonic journey. “Blame” is an interesting combination of low and high energy moments leaving the listener both soothed and energized after the tracks closing chord.
Ekali originally premiered the track at Life is Beautiful and later confirmed on Reddit that it was indeed a collaboration between him and ZHU. The track was released just as the Canadian producer’s Babylon tour has come to an end. Meanwhile, Zhu has been busy working on his collaboration with Adidas.
By all accounts, Zhu is having himself a career year. In 2017, the enigmatic beatmaker has already graced fans with a handful of aced remixes, a new EP, and a joint venture with Adidas. Now, just as the year draws to a close, Zhu continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. With the announcement of his New Year’s Eve Blacklizt party and pop-up shop in San Francisco, the Mind of a Genius producer also dropped off a stomping new original cut called “Jet The Doberman” for your listening pleasure.
The new tune is an elbow-throwing trap piece introduced by a lengthy build, halted by a plucky mid-track breakdown, capped with brassy horn stabs that would make TNGHT shed a proud tear. Complete with crisp hi-hat rolls and intriguing sample selects chopped throughout, “Jet The Doberman” is another one-two punch from Zhu before the year’s end. Safe bet to assume this one soundtracks a thunderous live entrance into 2018 for fans in attendance in San Francisco too.
An undisputed master of aesthetic, ZHU cultivates the anomalous in his music video for “Exhale/Stardust.”
A production that unfolds in stages, the infrared styled video indulges in rhythm, the two protagonists of the video keeping their bodies in time not only with the song’s beat, but with each other. Cinematic shots of a female running and riding a motorcycle in synchronicity with the track’s rhythmic progression contribute to the video’s sleek visual and sonic advancement. Emblematic of the dark quality that characterizes ZHU’s EP, stardustexhalemarrakechdream, the video takes an inexplicable turn, diverting its focus from its pregnant female protagonist to her in utero fetus. In true ZHU fashion, the production is both odd and sublime.
As Fall has officially hit, it is not time for all the FW2017 fashion shows. We did not expect for one of these shows to also contain new music from the one and only ZHU. In a new Adidas ad campaign for the Chinese market, ZHU not only appears throughout but also drops some absolutely
The worlds of electronic music and fashion collide as enigmatic producer ZHU teams up with Adidas to promote the globally recognized brand’s winter collection.
ZHU’s latest release, “Waters of Monaco,” may not be out in America just yet, but in China, the delightfully deep new track is already making quite the stir. Adidas’ fresh new Pure winter collection pairs perfectly with ZHU’s ultra-suave production style.
Seemingly cutting edge and classic all at once, the video for “Waters of Monaco” evokes a futuristic appeal rooted in a timeless style. Clean lines and smooth kicks take center stage as Chinese supermodel Angelababy brings a smoldering intensity to the project. As one of the premier tastemakers in the world of dance music, it is not surprising to see ZHU expand his influence into the realm of global style.
Gryffin is the latest to put his spin on “Feel It Still,” originally performed by Portugal. The Man. Gryffin’s decision to take on an unconventional remix target should come as now surprise as it was his highly regarded remixes of tracks by illustrious acts like Maroon 5 and Tove Lo in 2015 that broke him into the scene, before the release of his debut single “Heading Home,” in 2016.
Gryffin keeps his sound design bright and spirited, as usual, in his version of the smash-hit: a clear contrast to the Zhu‘s characteristically hazy, enigmatic rendition of the track. Gryffin’s dynamic, sped-up guitar pluck matched with the colorful future bass reverb is a fresh, rousing approach to the to the playfully infectious original.
