The Chainsmokers, Billie Eilish, Missy Elliot and more win big at this year’s MTV VMA’sMissy Elliot VMAs

The MTV VMA’s have been in a steady decline in viewership over the last three years, but from the social media response to this year’s broadcast, the 2019 award ceremony might have been MTV’s best in years. Backed by strong appearances by Lizzo, who dominated the stage in front of a massive inflatable booty, and Missy Elliot, who triumphantly accepted the evening’s Video Vanguard Award and then delivered a “Work It” performance for the ages.

Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande came away with hardware, giving an accurate snapshot of the past year in pop. The Chainsmokers took home the top designation in this year’s dance category, while Diplo, Sia, and Labrinth‘s LSD project fell short of Lil Nas X’s inescapable “Old Town Road” in the best direction category.

Despite TV numbers being down, the VMA’s prove to be alive and well in 2019, with a list of winners that represents a memorable year in music pop culture. See the full list of winners at this year’s MTV VMA’s below.

MTV VMAs hit record-low viewership and ratings in 2018Madonna Mtv Vmas

This year’s MTV VMAs viewership numbers dropped to a record low, breaking last year’s figures.

The Aug. 20 MTV Video Music Awards drew only 4.87 million viewers across eight Viacom-owned channels, compared to last year’s 5.36 million. Also plummeting is the awards show’s rating, which garnered only a 2.2 rating among young adults age 18-49. Last’s year’s awards show had a 2.6 rating.

The 2018 VMAs featured performances by Post Malone, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, and more. While dance music was low in representation this year, Avicii and Rita Ora’s “Lonely Together” won for best dance video. Other notable winners were Childish Gambino for “This Is America,” Cardi B‘s “I Like It,” and “Whatever It Takes” by Imagine Dragons.
