Gramatik teased a collaboration with Tom Morello in the spring of 2018, featuring Post Malone. Now a year later that track is out, except, instead of the rap-pop superstar the track features southern blues aficionado Gary Clark Jr.; and the result is nothing to turn one’s nose up at.
“Can’t Stop The Bleeding” is a wedding of masters and lovers of music. The track is a genuine Rock n’ Roll-EDM love child. Gramatik’s familiarity with producing bass-heavy backdrops for guitar riffs shines through. Morello, on the other side of this genre-bending track, is no stranger to head banging and rail riding and “Can’t Stop The Bleeding” allows the listener to do just that. While the union struts heavily underway, Clark Jr. provides a voice for the track that is guiding, soulful, and a very distinct type of loud. His words provide something for listeners to harmonize with and internalize. The guitar riffs and rhythm throughout the track blend and bleed together like brothers in arms, atop a groove that only comes from years of true experience.

Tom Morello has released his first-ever solo album under his own name, entitled The Atlas Underground. As an undisputed rock icon and top guitarist, Morello has led bands like Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave and now Prophets of Rage to success through making music that centers around raw, real emotion. Now, the Guitar Hero III boss has made it his mission to join together the energy behind rock music together with modern electronic dance music through a collaborative, focused album.
Enlisting artists from the electronic world that inspire him, Morello has created an album that bridges a gap between a generation of those who grew up when rock music was king, and those who have been raised at the height of electronic music’s success. For the latter, Morello explained in conversation with Zane Lowe at his Los Angeles stop of The Atlas Underground Experience that his intention with this album is to “inflict” the energy of guitars onto the next generation, inspiring future rockstars along the way. Working with stand-out artists like Knife Party, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki and K.Flay, Morello has created something true to himself in its motivations in social justice. There comes a time when an artist must break out of their comfort zone and experiment in order to evolve artistically. That time has come for Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine fame, whose efforts adventuring into different musical realms has resulted in his upcoming, electronic-laced LP dubbed The Atlas Underground. It’s due for an October 12 release.
One of its singles comes from a melancholic place. “Every Step That I Take” sees him honoring his fallen Audioslave band mate and famed rocker Chris Cornell, who was reported to have taken his own life earlier in the year. Its lyrics subtly mention topics like depression, anxiety, and the struggle to “find the neon path.” Though it taps the expertise of bass sensation Whethan in producing its electro undertones, Morello and other collaborator Portugal. The Man ultimately exert a larger influence over the piece for a relatable, nuanced piece with a long guitar riff at the end that’s radio-friendly to its core. Of the record, the musician stated:
“‘Every Step That I Take’ is about how the dreams, and depression, and love and the lack of it on the emotional steps of the gallows are processed. It was a song written by myself and Matt Shultz from Cage the Elephant and Johnny [Gourley] from Portugal.The Man sings it and it’s just a beautiful song. One of my favorites on the record.”
Morello also joined with SAVE, an organization dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention. The Atlas Underground album will also include features by Steve Aoki, RZA, Pretty Lights, Knife Party, and more.
In anticipation of his forthcoming solo album, The Atlas Underground, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, has aligned himself with hip-hop associates Big Boi and Killer Mike, as well as ubiquitous bass producer, Bassnectar, for “Rabbit’s Revenge.” The track takes a staunch look at an incredibly volatile topic as of late, addressing police brutality in its messaging.
The track assumes an aggressive stance toward the issue, with fierce, thrashing guitar chords, and assertive lyrics to match, which allude to some of the most prominent and hotly-debated subjects of police brutality in the last decade: “Fight for my life like I’m mother****ing Mike Brown / cause I refuse to be the next ni**a shot down.” The official video for the track, released through Apple Music, commemorates more of the most pronounced subjects of recent police brutality cases, including Bernard Bailey and Neville Johnson Jr.
“Rabbit’s Revenge” and its crew of individually outspoken creators follow a towering list of artists throughout history who have used their platform and following to take stances on the ruling issues of the day, from The Beatles‘ “Revolution” to Beyonce‘s 2013 Super Bowl performance—the latter also a blast to the police force. “Rabbit’s Revenge” is not Morello’s first police force critique, either. In 1992, Rage Against The Machine released the hotly-contended “Killing In The Name” following the LAPD’s beating of Rodney King the previous year. The track was crafted in response to the officers’ subsequent and controversial acquittal of all charges.

Morello told Lars Ulrich, drummer for Metallica, on his Beats 1 radio show, It’s Electric!, “I wanted to make a record that was the [Jimi] Hendrix of now,” which he described has three components: extraordinary guitar playing that falls outside the norm, creating radio songs that connected with a mass audience, and fashioning a new genre of music. The idea was to combine Morello’s analogue guitar sound with his favorite producers, rappers, musicians, and singers of today. Noting the shared DNA between electronica and metal after listening to Knife Party and Skrillex, Morello became illuminated to the idea of making a cross-genre project, and now in a few months it looks like it’ll finally materialize.
