Virgil Abloh‘s latest creative endeavor is a remake of The Martinez Brothers and Tiga’s 2018 hit, “Blessed.” He’s transformed it into a future jazz number with lo-fi overtones, replacing “Blessed’s” gritter electro elements and 4/4 rhythm with breaks and loungey instrumentals. The mellowed take stands as a complementary counterpart to the original and speaks to Abloh’s aesthetic behind the decks. It comes out on May 31 via Turbo, with an additional remix to their other collaboration, “Cleopatra,” by Ricardo Villalobos.

Outside the studio, Abloh also paired with Pioneer DJ to design custom, translucent versions of the CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2. The machinery will be shown at the Chicago MoMA throughout the summer season.

NMF Roundup: Habstrakt comes in hot, Alpha 9 soothes with ‘Azzura,’ The Black Madonna remixes Silk City and Dua Lipa + moreGoldrush18b 033 1

It’s most important day of the week: New Music Friday.

We’ve truly been blessed this week, with some of electronic music’s hottest acts dropping insane new productions. Habstrakt drops it low in his fiery new single, “About You,” and Malaa, too, delivers a house anthem in “We Get Crunk.” We welcome the return of Manila Killa, who’s delivered the beautiful “Run Away,” his first single in eight months. Mat Zo‘s released his highly anticipated No Words EP, from which we’ve selected the unparalleled “Music Lost All Words.” It’s also a stellar day for remixes, including The Black Madonna‘s rework of Silk City and Dua Lipa‘s “Electricity” and Syn Cole‘s bouncing take on Matoma‘s “Losing It Over You.” NGHTMRE and SLANDER‘s Gud Vibrations label celebrates with its first release today, too: WAVEDASH and fknsyd‘s “Deathwish.”

As each week brings a succession of new music from some of electronic music’s biggest artists, here’s a selection of tracks that shouldn’t be missed this NMF.

Black Coffee to headline wildlife conservation fundraiser, will play among Art Department, Adam Beyer, and moreBlack Coffee

Black Coffee, Art Department, Adam Beyer, Ida Engberg, Tiga, and more will convene behind the decks of Ushuaïa Ibiza to take part in The Night League and Music Against Animal Cruelty’s (MAAC) wildlife conservation fundraiser, “Wild.” The event seeks to raise awareness of animal cruelty and to simultaneously generate funds that will directly benefit wildlife conservation projects. All artists that appear on the event’s techno-leaning lineup will play for free.

Co-founder of MAAC, Art Department, noted the power a movement like this can have “when we realize its full potential.”

“We need to be clear that this goes beyond just our community,” he said. “This isn’t just techno against animal cruelty. This is music against it. This is a global force against treating animals like they have any less right to be here than we do.”

The Night League and MAAC will announce one final surprise guest on September 13, the evening of “Wild.” Those interested in attending the fundraiser can purchase tickets here.

Tiga and Clarian release ‘Stay Cool’ remix EPTiga Press Final 03 Copy

Earlier this year, Tiga and Clarian dropped off their three track Stay Cool EP to much acclaim, with off-kilter progressions, ear worm lyrics, and juicy acid synths pervading from the collection of funky collaborations. Now, the duo have enlisted a variety of talent from the realms of house and techno for the Stay Cool Remixes EP.

With five unique remixes from a fresh crop of creative producers, there is something for every raver on the new extended play. On his remix of “You’re So Special,” Gerd Janson channels the 1980’s with old-school synths and hollow, spacey percussion, while Eats Everything gives the same track a solid techno treatment, with understated melodies and heavy brass building up to a groovy break. With underground producers BETON, ABSOLUTE., and Dimitri Veimar each tossing in bold remixes of the EP’s title track, this collection of remixes is the perfect blend of old and new in Tiga’s colorful world of techno.

Kölsch revives his IPSO label with an invigorating new Tiga collaboration, ‘HAL’

Kölsch revives his IPSO label with an invigorating new Tiga collaboration, 'HAL'

Quite some time ago, the Danish dance auteur Kölsch unveiled his own IPSO label under the storied Kompakt Records. The label’s inception began with Michael Mayer’s double-sided “Dogma” release in 2016, although unfortunately, it saw no further avail — until now. Kölsch has revived the collaborative project, of which his residency in Cologne took the same name, with a brand new collaboration with the Turbo boss Tiga.

Kölsch and Tiga let their dance floor intellect shine on “Hal,” most notably with Kölsch’s swelling vocal samples. Understandably, comparisons to the supercomputer of the same name from the seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey cannot help but be made.

Eric Prydz drops secret new Cirez D edit of ‘Directions’ via Tiga’s Turbo label

Cirez D

Despite Eric Prydz having just buckled down in the studio for a forthcoming Pryda EP,  somehow the producer’s still found time to explore his darker alias, Cirez D.

His latest cut is a brooding extension of an anonymous producer from Belgium named BETON, whose track “Directions” was signed to Tiga’s Turbo Recordings.“Everywhere I played it, people asked what it was,” Tiga said about the original. “Recently, after having posted a clip of it online, an old friend by the name of Eric Prydz aka Cirez D asked me what it was and if he could have it.”

Prydz has embued a high-octane edit on “Directions” that manages to amplify BETON’s choice production with its deeply tumultuous Prydz-fashion.

“We toyed with the idea of keeping it as a top-secret weapon for personal use, but decided to share it with the world instead.”

Tiga & Clarian release ‘Stay Cool’ EP

Tiga and Clarian 'Stay Cool'

One might develop acute arthritis flipping through Tiga‘s dense back catalog of house and techno staples. While many hailing from the same undiscovered era of early 2000s club music have rested on their laurels or jumped the tech-house shark, the Montreal producer — whose body of work dates back to 2001 — has consistently worked to create compelling new material, consistently re-solidifying his status as one of techno’s most prominent contemporaries.

Tiga’s newest release, a collaboration with fellow Montreal producer Clarian dubbed Stay Cool, stems from the same inventive production techniques that served to solidify him as one of techno’s premiere work horses.

The acid-tinged synths in “Stay Cool” serve as a nod to a timeless dance floor aesthetic while still retaining its own progressive identity. The off-kilter vocal lines in “You’re So Special” cap off the EP in seductive fashion, alluding to the fact that Tiga’s collaborations are the furthest thing from cookie-cutter techno releases one might find on this side of the Atlantic.

Deadmau5‘s struck an underground gold mine, and luckily, he’s happy to share the wealth.

After an exciting string of announcements amidst the mau5’s final BBC Radio 1 residency show, the big cheese has thrilled fans with a more immediate gift. Fans of deadmau5’s radio show can relish in a complete collection of the music the artist slung out over the course of the last year thanks to the amusingly-named Spotify playlist “for a lack of a better playlist.”

From the music of Pryda, Gallya, ATTLAS, No Mana, Josh Butler, Rinzen, and many more, Mau5trap‘s gathered together the show’s complete 207-track long list that’s plenty easy to get lost in for 22 hours and 42 minutes if one feels so inclined.

Mau5trap’s looking towards an eventful new year. With fresh music from Joel Zimmerman, a new show, new signees, and more, it’s a good time to be a fan of the label, indeed.
