Shortly after his appearance on The Cave with Kenny Beats, Thundercat continues to stay in headlines with another single preceding his upcoming album release. “Dragonball Durag” sees Thundercat doing what he does best, with the bassist playfully singing in an entertaining stream-of-consciousness style over a groovy instrumental.

“Dragonball Durag” features production help from Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, and Dennis Hamm. Rap’s favorite goofball Zach Fox also contributed to the work by creating the track’s anime-inspired cover art. Thundercat’s fourth studio album, It Is What It Is is due on April 3.

Thundercat freestyles with Kenny Beats on ‘The Cave’ [Watch]Kenny Beats Thundercat The Cave Feb 2020

Not to be outshined by his collaborative album Unlocked with Denzel Curry, Kenny Beats continues his booming release streak with the help of Thundercat for a particularly off-the-rails episode of “The Cave.” The chaotic nature of this episode is evident from the get-go, with a befuddled Kenny watching Thundercat drink two cans of highly caffeinated Yerba Mate within three minutes of arriving at the studio.

“Is this how we’re starting? is this the start?” the trap producer exclaims as he stares into the camera.

Although Thundercat riffs on his five-string bass guitar to aid in production, Kenny is mainly focused on having his collaborator lay down some vocals for the uncharacteristically high bpm track he crafted beneath. Kenny tells the audience, “this episode is not going how it’s supposed to go,” moments before Thundercat grabs his fourth can of Yerba. Nevertheless, the duo is able to make “art” once Thundercat gets personal and honest with his lyrics.

Thundercat is back with the first single from his upcoming, ‘It Is What It Is’ LPThundercat Cred Finbarr Webste

Thundercat shares the first track, “Black Qualls,” from his newly announced It Is What It Is LP to be released via Brainfeeder Records on April 3. The song features Steve Lacy from The Internet and legendary funk icon, Steve Arrington. Funk immediately hits listeners in the face with Lacy’s high-register cooled-out vocals and bouncing electric guitar riffs that proceed to a psychedelic realm for a jarring turn in the arrangement.

The album is co-produced by label boss Flying Lotus and is set to serve features and contributions from the likes of Ty Dolla $ignChildish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, and of course Zack Fox.

It Is What It Is, one of Dancing Astronaut‘s most anticipated records of the year, is the fourth studio album from the Grammy-winning bass virtuoso, landing as the follow up his stellar Drunk project in 2017. In a press statement on the impending record, Thundercat said, “This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand… some things just aren’t meant to be understood.” Hear “Black Qualls” below.

The 200 Best Songs Of The 2010s

When this decade began, MP3s still reigned supreme. Now, at the end of it, a song is no longer even a file — it’s ephemera, on every streaming service and available to hear in myriad ways. For better and worse, the song (and the single) have become the norm for the general public’s music consumption. More »

Flying Lotus previews first new album in five years with David Lynch-assisted ‘Fire Is Coming’Flying Lotus 3d Live

Flying Lotus has unequivocally been one of the most diverse and prolific producers of the past decade. His range has known no bounds. From the hip-hop interludes between late-night Adult Swim shows, to his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Thom Yorke, to heralding his own label and artistic collective, the Los Angeles-based visionary has consistently pushed the limits. Now, FlyLo is teasing his first new album in five years with the release of his unsettling new single “Fire Is Coming” featuring iconic filmmaker David Lynch. On his latest, it’s clear the artist lesser known as Steve Ellison is pushing once again, and this time, it’s well into the avant-garde.

The video, directed by the You’re Dead! producer and David Firth, lies the same realm of something one might find playing on an old TV in the Museum of Modern Art. In the new visual, David Lynch’s face twists and his eyes burn with fire as he tells a story from the mouth of a wolf in a wheelchair. His story is told to children adorned in fur. The score to this short film is in line with the visuals, it scratches and itches, it evokes an inalienable fear. The fear is that of the end or the impending notion of an apocalypse, which is a theme Flylo hasn’t been shy about in his previous works.

“I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind—a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in the fire,” says Ellison in a press statement.

Mortality and humanity have been themes in his work for many years and despite their subtle nature have drawn realists, dreamers, and optimistic nihilists towards his music and message in droves.

Though this preview could be described as “disturbing”FlyLo’s upcoming FlamagraLP does manage to boast an impressive list of features—Anderson .Paak, Solange, George Clinton, Little Dragon, Thundercat, Toro y Moi and more will grace the album. .Paak is back: Artist announces new LP on the way, accompanying tourAnderson .paak Onard Release Date Artwork

Seasoned crooner Anderson .Paak just doesn’t seem to ever run out of steam. Mere months after dropping his highly acclaimed LP, Oxnard, in November 2018, .Paak is back, and eyeing his next album release. The followup to Oxnard bears the name Ventura, and as in the case of Oxnard, Ventura too accredits Dr. Dre as the project’s executive producer. Slated to arrive on April 12, Ventura is the fourth and final installment in .Paak’s narrative series of albums.

“Growing up in Oxnard gave me the grit and the church to find this voice of mine. One town over, I went further and found my depth,” .Paak said in a release. “The duality of each place inspired me greatly and from that I made two albums at the exact same time, but held one back because that would have been too many songs to perform live for you all! I like ending things on an even number, so welcome to Ventura.”

Post-Ventura release, .Paak will embark on a 21-date tour in support of the album. Thundercat will assist at each stop on the tour, while Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, Mac DeMarco, and Jesse Reyez will appear as openers on select dates. The tour, entitled “Anderson .Paak’s Best Teef in the Game Tour,” will take the artist through a myriad of major U.S. cities, spanning New York, Toronto, Chicago, and more. Tickets to the tour will go on sale on March 8. Each ticket purchase comes with either a CD or digital edition of Ventura.
