The 200 Best Songs Of The 2010s

This post was originally published on this site

When this decade began, MP3s still reigned supreme. Now, at the end of it, a song is no longer even a file — it’s ephemera, on every streaming service and available to hear in myriad ways. For better and worse, the song (and the single) have become the norm for the general public’s music consumption. More »

Flying Lotus previews first new album in five years with David Lynch-assisted ‘Fire Is Coming’Flying Lotus 3d Live

Flying Lotus has unequivocally been one of the most diverse and prolific producers of the past decade. His range has known no bounds. From the hip-hop interludes between late-night Adult Swim shows, to his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Thom Yorke, to heralding his own label and artistic collective, the Los Angeles-based visionary has consistently pushed the limits. Now, FlyLo is teasing his first new album in five years with the release of his unsettling new single “Fire Is Coming” featuring iconic filmmaker David Lynch. On his latest, it’s clear the artist lesser known as Steve Ellison is pushing once again, and this time, it’s well into the avant-garde.

The video, directed by the You’re Dead! producer and David Firth, lies the same realm of something one might find playing on an old TV in the Museum of Modern Art. In the new visual, David Lynch’s face twists and his eyes burn with fire as he tells a story from the mouth of a wolf in a wheelchair. His story is told to children adorned in fur. The score to this short film is in line with the visuals, it scratches and itches, it evokes an inalienable fear. The fear is that of the end or the impending notion of an apocalypse, which is a theme Flylo hasn’t been shy about in his previous works.

“I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind—a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in the fire,” says Ellison in a press statement.

Mortality and humanity have been themes in his work for many years and despite their subtle nature have drawn realists, dreamers, and optimistic nihilists towards his music and message in droves.

Though this preview could be described as “disturbing”FlyLo’s upcoming FlamagraLP does manage to boast an impressive list of features—Anderson .Paak, Solange, George Clinton, Little Dragon, Thundercat, Toro y Moi and more will grace the album. Flamagra is expected to release May 24 on Warp Records.

.Paak is back: Artist announces new LP on the way, accompanying tourAnderson .paak Onard Release Date Artwork

Seasoned crooner Anderson .Paak just doesn’t seem to ever run out of steam. Mere months after dropping his highly acclaimed LP, Oxnard, in November 2018, .Paak is back, and eyeing his next album release. The followup to Oxnard bears the name Ventura, and as in the case of Oxnard, Ventura too accredits Dr. Dre as the project’s executive producer. Slated to arrive on April 12, Ventura is the fourth and final installment in .Paak’s narrative series of albums.

“Growing up in Oxnard gave me the grit and the church to find this voice of mine. One town over, I went further and found my depth,” .Paak said in a release. “The duality of each place inspired me greatly and from that I made two albums at the exact same time, but held one back because that would have been too many songs to perform live for you all! I like ending things on an even number, so welcome to Ventura.”

Post-Ventura release, .Paak will embark on a 21-date tour in support of the album. Thundercat will assist at each stop on the tour, while Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, Mac DeMarco, and Jesse Reyez will appear as openers on select dates. The tour, entitled “Anderson .Paak’s Best Teef in the Game Tour,” will take the artist through a myriad of major U.S. cities, spanning New York, Toronto, Chicago, and more. Tickets to the tour will go on sale on March 8. Each ticket purchase comes with either a CD or digital edition of Ventura.

NMF Roundup: Oliver Heldens remixes CHIC, SLANDER and Spag Heddy team up, Ray Volpe flips Ookay + moreOcaso Festival Tamarindo By Pablo Murillo 06 01 2018 0525

It’s most important day of the week: New Music Friday.

This week’s releases are true stunners. After announcing a collaboration with Lights back in July, deadmau5 has finally unveiled “Drama Free” as part of his mau5ville: Level 2 EP. Oliver Heldens throws it back four decades by remixing CHIC‘s 1978 hit “Le Freak,” adding in a pounding bass to accentuate the original’s groovy beat. Bingo Players and Bali Bandits bring the funk with “Body Rock,” and SLANDER and Spag Heddy waste no time setting “Running to You” on fire. Ray Volpe puts his own spin on Ookay‘s “In My Mind,” while Party Favor taps Naïka for the hefty “Blame.” As part of What So Not‘s Not All The Beautiful Things remix package, AC Slater‘s put his signature bass-fueled house spin on the famous “Goh.” Kill Paris has put his own laid-back twist on Alison Wonderland‘s “Easy,” and Ross From Friends thrills with a take on Thundercat‘s “Friend Zone.”

As each week brings a succession of new music from some of electronic music’s biggest artists, here’s a selection of tracks that shouldn’t be missed this NMF.
