Theophilus London and Tame Impala are at it again, following up last year’s collaboration “Only You” with new retro handiwork, “Whiplash.” Like something out of Knight Rider 2000, “Wiplash” combines Kevin Parker’s psychedelic rock style with Theophilus London’s dynamic, hip-hop flow. Listeners are serenaded with a comforting contrast between the frontman’s voice and producer’s supporting vocals.
The pop-leaning single was first shared at a 2016 Boiler Room event in Brooklyn, but hasn’t seen the light of day until now. Parker told The Sunday Times, after being announced as a 2019 Coachella headliner, that a new Tame Impala album would be released this year. There is reason to believe the album could come before the April 13/20 performance in Indio, California considering Parker isn’t privy to playing unreleased music live.
Tame Impala’s previous album, Currents, saw release in 2015 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. This next LP is looking to be a career-defining project, vying for Album of the Year nods.

Just a few weeks ago, Theophilus London and Tame Impala‘s Kevin Parker gave listeners a taste of their collaborative Theo Impala project at a sold-out show in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the rest of the world was left reeling with anticipation and the hope that the tunes would hit the internet.
For now, their collaborative efforts include an original titled “Whiplash” and the duo’s own take on Nigerian singer-songwriter Steve Monite’s 1984 hit “Only You.” Now, they’ve shared a psychedelic Frankie Latina-directed video for “Only You” and it’s an endearing belter with the homemade VHS feel to match.

Last night, a few Theo Impala tracks debuted on Virgil Abloh’s Beats 1 Show: “Whiplash” and a cover of Steve Monite’s Afro-boogie classic “Only You.” There have also been rumors about a forthcoming … More »
