Beats, a brand new movie reflecting on 1990s UK rave culture from Steven Soderbergh (Oceans Eleven) and Brian Welsh (Black Mirror), is due out in theaters on May 17. Being such a music-focused project, many wondered what rave classics might make it into the film. Classic ravers worry not—the official soundtrack to Beats has dropped, and is now available to stream in full.

Featuring iconic acts like The Prodigy, Orbital, and Inner City, the soundtrack takes the listener through the depths of house, acid, techno, breaks, and bass. However, the soundtrack does not shy away from more contemporary tracks, with Hudson Mohawke’s “Scud Books” making a high-profile appearance. Check out the film’s trailer and soundtrack below.

Circumstances of The Prodigy singer, Keith Flint’s death ruled inconclusive by coroner

Circumstances of The Prodigy singer, Keith Flint’s death ruled inconclusive by coronerKeith Flint

While it’s clear epochal electronic icon, Keith Flint died by hanging in his home this past March, Essex coroner, Caroline Beasley-Murray has this week reported that his death can not be adequately ruled a suicide.

Coroner’s officer speaking on Beasley-Murray’s behalf, Linda Calder held an inquest hearing Wednesday to present Beasley-Murray’s reasoning that Flint’s death could’ve been an accident or some sort of “larking around” gone terribly wrong.

“I’ve considered suicide,” read Calder from the report. “To record that, I would have to have found that, on the balance of probabilities, Mr. Flint formed the idea and took a deliberate action knowing it would result in his death. Having regard to all the circumstances I don’t find that there’s enough evidence for that.”

However, Beasley-Murray maintained in her findings that the evidence also prevents her from decisively ruling Flint’s death accidental in nature, though his toxicology report yielded levels of cocaine, alcohol, and codeine.

“We will never quite know what was going on in his mind on that date,” Beasley-Murray offered as an open-ended conclusion.

Keith Flint, 49, was found dead by a friend in his Essex home Mar 4 of this year. The initial coroner’s report suggested no cause for suspicion or foul play. Regardless of the inconclusive nature of the most recent coroner’s report, both Flint’s indelible footprint on the music industry at large and the poignancy of his passing are clear as ever.

Keith Flint tribute set at Glastonbury Festival in jeopardy over publicity concernsKeith Flint

Just days after plans for Glastonbury Festival‘s ‘Keith Flint Appreciation Hour‘ were announced, Prodigy guitarist Gizz Butt has revealed that the tribute event will no longer be taking place in a series of now-deleted Facebook posts. Butt, who was set to DJ the hour with classic Prodigy tunes and some previously unreleased material, explained his reasons for the cancellation on Facebook over the weekend.

According to Butt, the cancellation is due to how the event was received by the press and those closest to Flint. He noted, “People are seeing it as an act of self promotion and I never wanted that.” Continuing in a second Facebook post, Butt doubles down on the positive intentions behind the set, now looking to create mental health awareness in a way that is respectful and sensitive to those grieving Flint’s passing. The posts have since been deleted, leaving the planned tribute in a place of uncertainty as Glastonbury inches closer.

After Keith Flint‘s passing in March, The Prodigy announced that they would be cancelling all upcoming performances. However, their presence will not be completely missing from the festivalsphere this year, as Glastonbury has just announced plans for a ‘Keith Flint Appreciation Hour’ set.

Led by Prodigy guitarist Gizz Butt, who noted that “it’ll be a tribute to Keith, the family, the band and all the loyal fans. But also, it goes out to anyone who may be suffering the same feelings that Keith had – that led to his untimely death.” Featuring a first listen to an unreleased Prodigy remix from 1996, the set will stand as a major step in the grievance of Keith Flint and mental health awareness in the electronic music community.

Petition emerges seeking Keith Flint statue to be erected in Essex, EnglandKeith Flint

A petition has been launched to erect a statue of The Prodigy frontman and founding member Keith Flint in his hometown of Essex, England. Earlier this month, Flint was found dead in his home just a few short months before the group was about to embark on a North American tour. Fellow co-founder of The Prodigy, Liam Howlett confirmed that the 49-year-old vocalist took his own life.

Flint was a legendary figure in the electronic dance music scene, and The Prodigy is known for bringing underground British dance music into the mainstream, undoubtedly changing the course of the genre. Now, a petition for a statue to be erected was started by Saphya Gower, hosted on 38 Degrees.

“The plan will be when it reaches a monumental amount of signatures to present it to the council and see what they may be able to discuss/contribute. It’s early days yet obviously but hopefully the outcome will be the right one. My parents generation had the Beatles & The Rolling Stones. My generation had The Prodigy, Manchester has Oasis, Braintree has The Prodigy,” the petition reads.

The petition currently has 6,042 of the 7,000 signatures it is seeking.

In the days leading up to his death, close friends remembered Flint as “positive and proud” and seemingly doing well.

Following the death of Flint, The Prodigy confirmed cancellation of all forthcoming shows “with immediate effect” on March 5 via Twitter. The band released their seventh studio album No Tourists in November 2018 and announced supporting tour dates including a North American tour as well as festival appearances. They were booked to play at this year at Glastonbury Festival where they previously made history as the first dance band to headline in 1997. Their U.S. tour would have been their first headline tour in 10 years.

The Prodigy brought underground British dance music to the masses and widely impacted the rave scene with their controversial and outlandish electronic style.
