In an act of online activism, Childish Gambino fans are reclaiming the r/Donald subreddit

This post was originally published on this site

Until last week, r/thedonald was a subreddit where Reddit users gathered to share posts related to the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Despite the subreddit’s description as “the place where we discuss in an unbiased manner Donald Trump’s great contributions to modern society,” the page is littered by hate-filled posts from people who look to Trump as a twisted savior of sorts, sent to save the American public from its diversity thugs.

Over the past week, however, fans of Donald Glover have taken the subreddit page by storm, posting memes and photos of the actor/rapper in a collective effort to reclaim “the Donald” name. At the very least, the move is a response to Childish Gambino‘s potent, racially charged “This is America” music video release. At best, it’s a form on online activism. And the most wonderful part is — it’s actually working. The subreddit page is now almost solely devoted to Childish Gambino/Donald Glover.

The following post, for instance, has been upvoted more than 45,000 times.

The One True Donald from thedonald

Another post draw some starkly accurate comparisons when juxtaposing the two Donalds, forcing subredditers to stop and question.

Not a racist ✅ Not a rapist ✅ Can read ✅ Was never bankrupt ✅ Likes Mexicans ✅ Talented ✅ Pays his taxes ✅ Handsome ✅ Loves immigrants ✅ Not a puppet for Russia ✅ Doesn’t want to fuck his daughter ✅ Must be the real one true Donald ✅ from thedonald

Finally, one post moves to campaign for a Donald Glover run for presidency. Step aside, Kanye.

Made this to screen print. Thought it fit well here. from thedonald

The hope is that if enough Donald Glover fans start posting on r/the_donald, they can reclaim this subreddit as well. In a world where activism can take many forms, users of social media are realizing the digital domain as a space for creating First Amendment political movements and reclaiming hateful digital spaces as places of empowerment.

Student translates Star Wars’ ‘Cantina Theme’ into a mathematical equation [Watch]

This post was originally published on this site

The Star Wars subreddit has unearthed a new, unusual gem.

Reddit user ‘smallgoblin’ has ascended to Reddit royalty after posting a video clip that shows the user converting the movie series’ ‘Cantina Theme’ into a mathematical equation.

“It started with x+4…and I couldn’t unhear it,” smallgoblin wrote of the experiment, “Instead of doing my math homework I figured out what the Cantina Theme would sound like if your instrument was a pencil.”

The formulaic result would be x + 4783 – x + 4v|VE| (x + 4)(f – 711) = A, an answer that when worked through comes out to be ~299,792,457, or in other words, the speed of light, when measured in meters per second.

Smallgoblin’s post has since become the fifth most-upvoted post of all time in the history of the Star Wars subreddit.

See r/EDM’s highest voted electronic songs and albums of 2017 [full list]

This post was originally published on this site

The people of r/EDM have spoken.

As streaming platforms like Spotify compile end of year playlists comprised of the year’s most popular dance tunes, so too does Reddit‘s electronically focused r/EDM subreddit. The subreddit has produced a list of 2017’s “Highest Rated” songs, albums and EPs, and throwback posts, using user submitted Reddit ‘up-votes’ to calculate the year’s crowd favorites.

The democratic approach sees Reddit visitors elect The Chainsmokers & Coldplay‘s “Something Just Like This” as the highest rated song of the year with 497 votes. The full list features a total of 30 tracks, with Skrillex‘s remix of “Humble” registering in second place with 443 votes, and Illenium‘s “The Sound of Walking Away” weighing in at third with 373 points. Kygo, Martin Garrix, Marshmello, and ODESZA likewise rank, speaking to a resurgence of preference for mainstream releases among voting Reddit users. Porter Robinson‘s opaque Virtual Self alias charts twice on the highest rated list for “Eon Break” [303 points] and “Ghost Voices” [245 points], reflecting a general fondness of the DJ’s new pet project. Virtual Self’s eponymous EP is duly noteworthy for its placement as fourth on the subreddit’s grouping of the highest rated albums and EPs.

Reddit voters exhibit a collective inclination towards ODESZA‘s A Moment Apart, the platform’s top voted album of a total of ten albums/EPs with 561 points. Avicii’s Avīci EP receives the second most votes at 528, while Illenium’s sophomore album attracts the third most, earning 441 for Awake. Kaskade‘s debut seasonal album, Kaskade Christmas also emerged as a highly celebrated release, securing the eighth spot on the list.

r/EDM’s Highest Rated Throwback Posts category is as selective, as the subreddit’s Highest Rated Albums/EPs section, made up of only ten tracks. A testament to the memorable quality of Porter Robinson’s original productions, “Language” sits at the top of the list, likely gaining newfound popularity in the wake of Robinson’s foundation of Virtual Self. Skrillex’s Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP claims the succeeding position, while Justice‘s “Cross” follows.

The publication of the subreddit’s statistics has elicited a variety of responses from r/EDM users, with some finding the results to be an “expected” but paltry reflection of the year’s most widely acclaimed electronic releases, whereas others alternatively identify the lists as those that are accurate in their identification of listeners’ dance preferences this year. While the findings are indicative only of the listening trends of those that voted, the charts denote just where voters’ fan favorites were concentrated, with the utmost transparency nonetheless.

This Kanye-Inspired Skrillex Poem Is Exactly What We Need Right Now

This post was originally published on this site

It’s no secret that our staff visits the Skrillex subreddit pretty religiously. As one of the foremost communities on Skrillex news and culture, it’s a goldmine of new information and we love all the people that have devoted their time to the endeavor.

Two nights ago, Reddit user ChipsAndDiplo posted a Kanye-inspired poem on the subreddit all about Skrillex. It’s based on Kanye’s “I Love Kanye,” and it’s been made to fit perfectly with many of the current perceptions of Skrillex.

It reads:

I miss the old Skrillex, straight from LA Skrillex
Chop up the vox Skrillex, set on his goals Skrillex
I hate the new Skrillex, the bland beats Skrillex
The always trap Skrillex, quiet in the news Skrillex
I miss the sweet Skrillex, chop up the beats Skrillex
I gotta say, at that time I’d like to meet Skrillex
See I invented Skrillex, It wasn’t any Skrillex’s
And now I look and look around and there’s so many Skrillex’s
I used to love Skrillex, I used to love Skrillex
I even had the black glasses, I thought I was Skrillex
What if Skrillex made a song about Skrillex
Called “I Miss The Old Skrillex”? Man, that’d be so Skrillex
That’s all it was Skrillex, we still love Skrillex
And I love you like Skrillex loves Skrillex

However, the user does include a disclaimer at the end which reads, “I don’t actually hate the new Skrillex I just really, really needed a break from my assignments and did this out of boredom while listening to Kanye.”

It’s cool, man. We get it.
