Barcelona’s Sónar Festival proves once again that it’s playing in the big leagues, with a 2020 artist announcement that simply leaves little to be desired across the entire spectrum of electronic music.
For its 2020 edition, the three-day music, creativity, and technology event manages to accomplish what many festivals in the electronic sphere cannot—topping the bill with both unique and must-see acts in addition to a deeply fleshed out supporting roster. This year, Sónar’s lineup is stacked more than 100 artists, turning heads with names like The Chemical Brothers, Eric Prydz, Despacio (comprised of James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and the brothers behind 2ManyDJs), Lindstrøm, Battles, Max Cooper, Telefon Tel Aviv, and TNGHT.
Sónar Festival takes place between June 18 – 20 and although the earliest phases of tickets sold out almost immediately, the Sónar pass is available for €170 until February 6. See the full lineup below.
As if more than 130 live performances wasn’t enough, Sónar Festival 2019 recently announced plans for an interactive, 3D experience for this year’s installment. Founded in 1994, the annual Barcelona-based festival is renowned for its unique displays of music, art, and technology. The three-day festival shakes things up with the additions of new features each year, with this go-around proving to be the most innovative edition of Sónar yet.
An enveloping 3D dome that is 19 meters in diameter is being built as part of the festival’s technology-based area known as Sónar+D. The dome will feature interstellar views and interactive audio experiences alike, curated by artists from all over the globe. Electronic artist Holly Herndon, having recently released her PROTO album, will be present alongside partner Mat Dryhurst with a piece called “Chain Opera,” which will combine AI and the human voice.
The full 3D experience is set to last throughout the festival’s entirety. Head here for more info on what Sónar+D has in store this year.
Disclosure wins the hearts of fans not only with their grooving albums, but also with animated and energetic live shows. After playing the festival circuit and embarking on multiple world tours after the release of Caracal and Settle, their three concerts in 2017 and 2018 combined left fans itching for more performances. However, Disclosure has now announced that they will be playing Sonár Festival in Barcelona in the summer of 2019.
After releasing five songs this year and confirming a new album, likely coming in 2019, their upcoming performances are sure to be packed to the brim with new material. In a tweet announcing the show, the duo referred to 2019 as a “special year for [them],” and said they’ll be “doing something very different to what [they’ve] done before.” With new music and shows lined up for next year, an updated live set-up may be in the works as well. Hopefully, this is the first of many announcements from the beloved British duo.
