It’s been a few years since the world has had new Tut Tut Child material. The artist has been mainly working on a side project, Forest Knot, since mid-2018, and prior to that, there hadn’t been a Tut Tut Child release since 2017. The London-based artist has broken his silence, though, with the release of his Pantheon EP, out now on Extreme Music. Its title track is a dramatic melodic journey and is sure to thrill fans of his previous works, as well as newcomers.

Rameses B, too, has a new compilation out Nov. 1. The Liquicity Records Eden EP showcases the artist’s strong command of the liquid drum ‘n’ bass realm, and he praised the label in a tweet announcing the EP, saying “it’s only natural to have this kind of release with them, liquid, emotional and something that represents all the good times.”

For Flite‘s latest venture, he reworked Jon Hopkins‘ 2018 track, “Emerald Rush.” He’s flipped the style into something new, and it’s completely captivating. “I absolutely LOVE Jon Hopkins’ music, he is such an influence on my own tunes,” Flite said in the track’s description. “I decided I would try and rework ‘Emerald Rush’ into a drum ‘n’ bass track. So much respect for his compositions, I hope I have done him justice.” 

The drum ‘n’ bass continues with Mazare and Philip Strand’s “Battlecry,” which debuted this week via Monstercat. Strand’s powerful vocals set the scene for the epic battle that about to take place, leading the listener into a dramatic build. Mazare’s fierce production takes over at the drop, packing a hefty drum ‘n’ bass punch.

Virtual Riot can make whatever he wants forever. The multi-faceted producer excels at whatever genre he’s producing, and for his newest, he returns to glitch-hop to play… Mario? “Bossfight Afterparty” is a brilliant three-minute combination of video game blips and bloops, polished with undeniably precise production. Your move, Bowser.

There’s just something about drum ‘n’ bass that’s always spoken to my soul. I remember hearing my first Pendulum song a decade ago and thinking “what on earth is this, and where can I get more?”

The genre began making its way into the electronic music sphere in the early 1990s, right around the time I was born. Its rapid breakbeats took over London and Bristol, ramping up the jungle and rave scene to 160-180 BPM. While still more widespread in the UK to this day, the genre has slowly trickled into the United States EDM scene. We still have a long way to go before drum ‘n’ bass artists are regularly installed as main stage performers at major US festivals, but there’s so much to discover and embrace in the US drum ‘n’ bass scene (I see you, Flite and Boxplot). There’s also an endless stream of quality dnb being churned out overseas, with imprints like RAM Records, Hospital Records, and Liquicity Records as strong as ever in their supporters and fan base.

I regularly tell people that have never really gotten into drum ‘n’ bass to just try. It’s a diverse and ever-evolving genre, full of sub-genres and offshoots. I guarantee you’ll find something you like in some format. Dig through the 100-song playlist I’ve compiled to celebrate 100 installments of this series to see if there’s something there for you!

Thank you, drum ‘n’ bass, for your tireless energy, emotive vocals, and the ability you always have to yank me out of a bad mood and reignite my love for electronic music in today’s day and age. Here’s to you, and the brilliant artists who create you.

Oakwite puts his unique stamp on his nothing,nowhere remix right off the bat by switching to a different key. He largely keeps the verses and bridges the same as the original, introducing a dramatic drum & bass rhythm for the chorus. The original track lends itself well to a drum & bass pattern, and elements like its melancholic guitar melody led one SoundCloud user to call it “emo dnb.” This fitting description makes an interesting niche for the same artist who (successfully, in my opinion) tackled Post Malone’s “Psycho.”

I’m still riding a high from The Knocks‘ St. Louis show last week, so they were bound to make an appearance in this week’s Beat Lab. The New York duo debuted this Wankelmut remix of “Retrograded” on Feb. 13, giving the smooth track a re-envisioning as a more house-oriented number. The German artist has crafted a lively beat around The Knocks’ catchy vocals, making this a stellar rendition of a standout New York Narcotic track.

Within the span of a month, London’s 1991 has blessed the music world with two of his creations: January’s “Guiding Light” and now “Illusions.” He builds the song dramatically, leading in with gradually crescendoing synths and hints of beautiful female vocals that make a full appearance as the introduction creeps up to the drop. 1991 once again flexes his ample command of the drum & bass realm with this brilliant blend of ethereal vocals and a racing beat.

“Made this just because I really love the original,” Grabbitz noted of his newest release: a remix of The Japanese House‘s 2018 “Lilo.” Where the original is a downtempo, introspective piece that drips with emotion and nostalgia, Grabbitz gives it a more upbeat rhythm and a subtle trap backbone. He leaves plenty of space for the English artist’s vocals to shine in the verses, but chops them up in an intriguing manner in the chorus, mixing them with a distinctive percussion pattern.

Feb. 22 has brought an impressive slew of EPs and LPs to the electronic music sphere—among them, Rameses B‘s. Spacewalk III: Alpha Cen‘s fifth track, “Get Through” with Veela, is a gorgeous, slow-burning example of the Leeds artist’s otherworldly production capabilities. “Veela’s vocals gives us a reason to get past even the most hardest of times, with her soothing yet striking tone of voice paired with minimalistic and melodic liquid drum and bass makes us believe that we can get through anything,” Rameses B observes in the track’s description.

BIJOU has released some new house heat on Insomniac Records, and Walker & Royce have done the same on HotBoi Records with “Word.” The Knocks reveal the latest to remix a New York Narcotic track: Wankelmut with a funky new take on “Retrograded.” DUCKY thrills with a new EP, and formidable Swarm puts a dark twist on Roniit’s “Visceral.” Dustycloud returns to Tchami‘s CONFESSION imprint with “Reckless,” and Braxton channels nighttime vibes with a new Anjuna release, “When The Sun Goes Down.” Sweekuh taps Love, Alexa and Faze on a new single, “Where Do We Let Go” and R3HAB turns the energy up on Mabel’s “Don’t Call Me Up.”

One wouldn’t think Varien‘s darker style would mix well with a group like The Chainsmokers. But the Florida-based producer is here to flex his versatility with a brilliant rework of “This Feeling.” He flips the song’s major key into a minor key and gives it a more shadowy edge, going the synthwave route and giving the song a fresh, new tone. “I think my remix brings a new way of looking at the song,” he says. “I believe it’s a much more emotional and deeper vibe, compared to the upbeat and cheerful vibe of the original.”


At the end of August, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs debuted a groovy, bass-fueled original by the name of “Body Move.” A few months later, he’s unleashed a remix pack for the song, featuring the talents of Bag Raiders and Raito. Raito, who often manufactures intense techno and house tracks like his Virtual Self flips, takes a smooth route on his TEED remix. Gliding percussion elements deliver a more relaxed vibe than the original, as Raito levels out the songs roots for a techno-oriented, dreamy flip.


It’s been a minute since we’ve seen new material from Mt. Eden. The dynamic powerhouse producer revealed a brief mixtape in February and a “Lion King” remix in August, but has since been quiet. Turns out he’s been cooking up a fiery house tune called “Momentum.” Backed by his usual top-notch production and a sizable amount of bass, this dancefloor-ready tune shows Mt. Eden truly hasn’t lost any “momentum” and knows no genre limits.


Becko‘s impeccable combination of beats, bass, and alternative/emo-inspired vocals have become a favorite of mine. Drawing inspiration from “Stranger Things,” he’s labeled his latest “Mindflayer” and released it via The Arcadium. His powerful vocals shine in this dramatic track, weaving in and out between heavy synth melodies and climactic choruses. Originally released as part of his DIGITAL HEAVEN EP a few months ago, he showcases striking pieces that thrill with each listen.


Rameses B has been busy this year. He’s released not one, but two Spacewalk albums, each taking listeners to new heights with their astral-inspired serene productions. Rameses B returns after July’s Spacewalk II release with “Portal” featuring GLaDOS. Glitchy vocals tell a story of life and death over a psytrance backing. Bittersweet violin melodies swim in and out of the production, interspersed seamlessly with elements for a range of genres. The producer again demonstrates why he’s caught so much attention over the past seven years with a piece that’s as intriguing as it is relaxing.

Oliver Nelson is back with another polished disco tune. In “Talk,” Linae’s glossy vocals complement Nelson’s production perfectly, creating a disco atmosphere that’s both modern and retro. The original comes as the Swedish producer’s first release since his January collaboration with Tobtok, “99 Red Balloons.”


I stumbled across a visionary trio a few days ago and was intrigued by the combination of synthwave and Fleetwood Mac. Brooklyn musicians Jaguar Dreams used “simple instruments and modern machines to feed the primitive appetite for dance” in this cover, and it’s a dreamy, gorgeous wonderland. Did I mention that this is their first release ever? The future is bright for this trio.


No matter the feelings toward Drake‘s smash hit “In My Feelings” and its accompanying viral dance movement, listeners will surely appreciate this take from talented brass aficionados Brasstracks. Abandoning Drizzy’s vocals for bright horn stabs, the duo have crafted an infectious rendition that’s packed with power and energy.


Party Ghost‘s venture into darker music has led to some incredible productions. His latest, “Cloak and Dagger,” is completely unpredictable. It gathers momentum slowly, building and dropping into pounding, shadowy bass, followed by another surprise that hits just before the two-minute mark. Incorporating dubstep and heavy wobbles into the final part of the track, Party Ghost demonstrates there’s nothing he can’t do.


Rameses B has been on a roll this year, dolling out one drum & bass masterpiece after another. For his latest, though, he’s followed up his January Spacewalk album with its second installation: Spacewalk II: Zero Gravity. This psytrance track, “Space Race,” is perhaps one of the most upbeat of the album and is both delicate and complex at the same time. “We are explorers and diverge with grace because no matter which path we choose we end up exactly where we need to be,” he says of the album. “Music can tell that story and this music can help us get there.” Couldn’t agree more.
