Apparently, pop culture can now assign an entire generation their own color. “Millennial Pink” has supposedly been on the rise for the past few years, but 2017 is when it became inescapable. Everywhere I looked this year, the subdued-yet-quirky shade was lurking. BAM, there it is in a weirdly sexual Postmates ad on … More »
The best way to judge a boy band’s potency is the intensity of the screaming throng that accompanies its every move. That was true in the 1960s, when the mop-top-era Beatles incited widespread hysteria, and it was true again at the turn of the millennium, when Backstreet Boys and NSYNC became the faces of a … More »
Lately the music world has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.’s landmark Automatic For The People — Stereogum, for instance, interviewed Michael Stipe — and lo and behold, one of the album’s signature songs made its way to the American Music Awards tonight. It’s unclear whether Pink and Kelly Clarkson had the Automatic … More »
One of the world’s greatest pop singer-songwriters seemed to achieve her final form this year by having drunken sex with a muppet in a music video called “Disco Tits.” The song itself is a jam, a poised and minimal dance-floor deconstruction that toggles between spacious staccato piano stabs and synthetic bass throbs that roll with … More »
Big room maestro Dash Berlin is proving to be the king of crossovers as his latest rework takes on Pink’s “What About Us,” the lead single from her seventh studio album, Beautiful Trauma, out earlier this year.
In a quintessential Berlin go ahead, the producer furthers Pink’s massive hit in his big room take, priming the pop number for plentiful stadiums and arenas across the world.
Originally played out at Berlin’s Ultra Mexico set earlier this month, his remix of “What About Us” was featured on Hardwell‘s the weekly radio show, Hardwell On Air. The reworking stands out amongst the energetic contemporary numbers Hardwell chose for the show, with Pink’s emotional, euphoniously-executed vocals taking center stage.
Pink is having the last laugh. This past summer, when MTV awarded its Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to the singer born Alecia Beth Moore, there was much social media cackling; surely they weren’t serious about elevating this durable and reliable hitmaker to the same iconic level as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Justin Timberlake? … More »
At this point One Direction have been broken up long enough that we’re beginning to see what each member of the once-dominant boy band is bringing to the table in his solo career. Zayn Malik fashioned himself as a mini-Weeknd of sorts, exploring 50 shades of sexy pop-R&B and coming away with some decent … More »
Billy Joel hasn’t released a new album of pop music since 1993’s River Of Dreams, and he hasn’t released any pop songs since the two tracks that he dropped in 2007. But earlier this year, Joel said he was working on a song with the pop star Pink, not exactly the first person you’d … More »
What a time to be a live television program. The only TV many people watch in real time these days is sporting events, Game Of Thrones, and maybe primetime political talk shows — and even that last category you’re far more likely to encounter excerpted on social media after the fact. Saturday Night Live’s ratings … More »
