Nina Kraviz is no novice when it comes to sonic world-building. A good DJ set should transport dance floor disciples to a halcyon, far away place; and Kraviz does precisely that.

With a stunning hour-and-45-minute set inside the Eiffel Tower, of all places, the techno goddess unravels her masterfully woven web of tech-sanity all around her audience. The hypnotic performance is the latest Cercle live stream event, pairing icons of techno and house music with eye-watering, epic locations.

Kraviz’s all-vinyl set weaves in and out of minimal oddities, as the crowd dances in the shadow of the French landmark with a hazy Parisian skyline behind them. As with previous installments of the event series, the match between artist and place feels meant to be. It’s clear the gig is a special one for Kraviz, who felt that her style and the evening’s location were an inexorable match.

“Techno as an avant-garde form of music fits perfectly here,” Kraviz explained in a post-set interview. “I’m very honored to play here. I hope the guy who built it can feel us, and feels what’s going on.”

Nina Kraviz is the latest influencer to partner with Ray-Ban on the eyewear authority’s Feel Your Beat collection. A line of product collaborations with artists who help the brand re-envision classic sunglass styles through a literal modern lens, Feel Your Beat has previously featured aesthetic reworks courtesy of The Martinez Brothers, among other musicians. Whereas The Martinez Brothers assisted in the production of a limited edition take on Ray-Ban’s iconic Wayfarer, Kraviz customizes the cat-eye frame in her exclusive work with Ray-Ban.

“The cat-eye hasn’t been produced by Ray-Ban for a long time, but I was adamant about our collaboration (using it), as that’s my favorite frame style,” Kraviz said. “Besides my limited edition capsule collection, from now on, all cat-eye frames Ray-Ban will make will be named ‘Nina’ after me. I find this amazing!”

The cat-eye frame originally surfaced in the 1960s, but Ray-Ban adds a contemporary edge to the frame’s vintage flair in their release of two different Kraviz-customized versions of the frame. Ray-Ban will market an Eye Green and an Orange Safari edition, retailing for $188 and $178, respectively. They’re available on Ray-Ban’s official website and at a limited number of Ray-Ban stores.

Event organizers at Audio Obscura are going above and beyond this year at Amsterdam Dance Event. For three nights festival-goers can party all night long at Bijlmerbajes prison in the Netherlands. The local promoters have recruited Seth Troxler and Honey Dijon for day one, followed by a darker techno billing with Rødhåd, Speedy J, and Jon Hester for day two. Then finally Nina Kraviz is slated to headline the last day, who is primed to bring her трип label showcase to the penitentiary party as well.

The event runs from Thursday, October 18 through Saturday, October 20 bringing the abandoned Amsterdam prison to life, representing underground dance music with a strong three-day talent roster. Tickets for the events at Bijlmerbajes are available for purchase on September 5 at 12:00pm EST.

Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival has announced the first wave of programming for its burrow-wide 2018 edition. The eleventh annual BEMF takes place October 3-6 at some of the city’s hottest venues —including Good Room, Output, and Avant Gardner.

The tenth annual BEMF starts on Thursday, October 4th, with DJ Hell and Massimiliano Pagliara kicking off the festivities at the Good Room while Breakbot ushers in the weekend over at Output. The following evening sees Motor City Drum Ensemble at the Avant Gardner while Shlohmo‘s WEDIDIT crew takes over one of the separate clubs at the compound. That Saturday, DJ Seinfeld will take over the Good Room on his DJ-KiCKS tour, while Mount Kimbie  —who are about to release a DJ-Kicks mix of their own — will take over the Avant Gardner in support of Nina Kraviz.

BEMF will also be offering a limited number of reduced all-access passes in recognition of “the increasingly difficult costs associated with living in Brooklyn, both for artists and music lovers alike.”

Nina Kraviz‘s трип label unveiled details surrounding its 20th release and a new 10-track compilation, Don’t Mess With Cupid, ‘Cause Cupid Ain’t Stupid

The compilation will feature contributions by various artists; such as the label boss herself, Bjarki, Biogem and Exos, and more, in addition to brand new music from Aphex Twin under his Universal Indicator alias.

His contribution, “15 C7,”  which will surely bring forth brutal acid techno cut, marks the first time Richard D. James has released music as Universal Indicator since 1995.

A description from трип reads as following:

The 20th release from Nina Kraviz’s seminal трип imprint is an homage to some of the most uncompromising manifestations of electronic music imaginable. Tracing sub-cultures from the 90s to the present day, трип 20 interrogates the boundaries of tempo and form via hardcore, gabber, acid techno and ambient. A mix of unreleased material and essential gems, the ten-track compilation visits трип regulars, esoteric masters and relative newcomers on a voyage to the extremities of a global underground.

трип 20 continues the tradition of gatefold double EPs as a conceptual album. All of the tracks are selected around a particular story, a trip, and presented as a continuous sonic landscape. All of the tracks are structured in a way that they can be mixed one with another an endless amount of times making a continuous loop, a trip, that needs only end when the party stops. Kraviz works without release dates or deadlines, enabling her to achieve a certain sound bank to shape the story, unmasking the thoughts and unravelling like a dream.

So far, Shadowax’s track, “I Want To Be A Stewardess,” is the only track which can be heard in full and it’s a brooding acid hitter that hits at the trips listeners will endure.

Despite a visibly shifting techno scene stateside, 2018 marks one of the most banner years for  Detroit, and America’s finest house & techno institution — Movement. With a booking that arguably serves as a controversial departure from the city’s roots, Movement’s 2018 programming captures the experimental essence of the times, a time where producers are gifted more creative freedom than ever to explore new sounds and the space between genres. As some techno becomes more and more of an amorphous body of music, free from rigid delineations, and a spectrum of experimentation emerges, there will always be those that prefer the pioneers lead the way.

No matter whether one’s an old techno head, a Drumcode-stan, or feeling the direction that Dirtybird is taking tech house, there’s one thing we can all agree upon — Movement will deliver. Ahead of the festival, Dancing Astronaut has taken to compiling the 10 sets not to miss. From the more obvious, Detroit-heavy mainstays who continually rep the city, to the purveyors of present and past innovation, 2018 promises to be an unmissable installment. Movement is techno history in the making. Don’t miss out. 

10) Shigeto

Movement 2018 marks a proper Shigeto homecoming. Beyond the Ghostly International artist’s booking, which will allow him to showcase his triumphant new album, The New Monday, Zachary Saginaw represents the exemplary booking of Movement’s solid undercard. An equally exemplary representation of what it means to be a musician in the modern age, Saginaw’s music is a union of classical training, energetic ambient programming, hip-hop, jazz, raw passion, and everything in between. His latest work was inspired by a return to the city of Detroit and is delivered with an unequivocal passion that meets Motown’s diverse musical history, which not to mention, promises a spectacular live show, complete with an impassioned fervor on the drum kit. Shigeto recently launched his own label, Portage Garage Sounds, which doubles as a creative outlet for the city’s local musicians and as a weekly showcase purveyor at the city’s Motor City Wine. He’s steeped in the breadth of what it means to be a working artist in the birthplace of techno and will undoubtedly do the city justice, playing everything from Motown to Danny Brown come his Hart Plaza descent.

9) Mija

It’s more than likely Mija’s “Fk A Genre” mentality will take a backseat to her longstanding love for Detroit techno, if nowhere else but for her 2018 Movement set. Coming off her highly stylized HOW TO MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN LOVERS EP, Mija can usually be found wielding buoying bass music these days. However, cleaning up the festival this year just behind Rezz, from 8-10 on Monday, she’ll be showing the Stargate Stage just how deep her omnipresent tech house tastes run. 

8) Dubfire

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of both his illustrious solo career and the inception of his SCI+TEC label, internationally revered DJ, Dubfire is showing no signs of ware. The Iranian “Exit” producer will return to Movement for a two-hour 10-midnight headlining set. Fans would be hard-pressed to miss it, as the four-time nominee and Grammy-Winner is known to seamlessly summon sets straight out of the techno underworld.

7) Carl Craig

Carl Craig can be described as an electronic music icon, a world-class dancefloor experimentalist, and an ambassador for his native Detroit, but no such term would suffice for the work and art the man has bestowed upon the city of Detroit — and really, the entire world of techno — over the last few decades. Having served as the co-creator and artistic director for the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 and 2001, Craig’s served on the frontlines of the techno revolution in Detroit since its dawn.  With a plethora of releases under a multitude of aliases, Carl Craig has had more musical personalities than most electronic artists in their lifetime. Whether he’s serving up his deep commitment to soul, jazz, or techno come Memorial Day weekend, Hart Plaza is in for a treat. Craig will be reminding attendees that Detroit is the birthplace of techno, after all.

6) Ida Engberg

One half of the techno’s Swedish power couple, Ida Engberg has been spinning her intoxicating web of minimal house and techno on the high-profile, low-nonsense techno label, Drumcode, spearheaded by her highly decorated husband, Adam Beyer for quite some time now. Born in the suburbs of Stockholm and coming up through the Swedish underground club scene, she has more than paid her dues. Don’t miss Engberg show the boys at Pyramid Stage how it’s done Saturday.

5) Helena Hauff

Revered for her outpouring love for 80s synths, industrial, and cold wave classics, Helena Hauff is leading the avant-garde hardware movement in both electro and techno. As a supreme selector and enthusiast for a vast array of musical subcultures; her sets boast everything from punk to nu-wave, industrial, krautrock, and avant-garde electro. Hauff’s pushing the boundaries of what it means to exist as an artist.  She’s rooted in raw experimentation, and her Movement set promises a polar opposition to the perfect, polished mainstream.

4) FISHER

Dirtybird Australian newcomer, Fisher’s iconic “Ya Kiddin’” track took on a life of its own last summer, rapidly becoming one of the most Shazamed anthems of the 2017 festival season. Since then, he has stunned with his Oi Oi EP, containing hits like “Stop It,” which has had everyone from Dirtybird Campout to Coachellamovin’ up and down side to side like a rollercoaster.” Follow the Fish Saturday to the Movement stage to get a piece of the funky frenzy everyone in house music has been raving about.

3) Nina Kraviz

Perhaps the best way to sum up the work of the Russian dentist turned DJ, Nina Kraviz, is by taking a look at her quote “Music is a continuum connecting generations,” in her crowning piece as Mixmag‘s 2017 DJ of the year.  The cosmonaut dentist weaves through eras with ease, and with little to no novacane, too. Her Movement set will be one of her few performances stateside in the next year, and with her burgeoning, mutant techno, power-house bombs, and a few trance numbers, attendees won’t want to miss one of the most talked about stateside techno sets of the coming year.

2) Claude VonStroke

Dirtybird label head and founder, Claude VonStroke, will show fans who isn’t afraid of Detroit Saturday at the official Movement Stage. The Dirtybird crew is an unrelenting force at movement each year—this year notwithstanding—though VonStroke is sure to wield a massive set, as his proclivity for Detroit techno is hallmarked by his explosive, omnipresent appearances at Movement. His 2016 set at the fest for example, shook Detroit to its core when he teamed up with none other than Green Velvet at the Red Bull stage for one of their classic, unforgettable 90 minute b2b sets.

Charlotte de Witte is the name on the tips of the techno world’s proverbial tongue. With a style that remains as tied to the underground techno scene as it is trance, and Belgium — where de Witte’s from — she’s proving to be an all-around revelation for the state of techno. With a DJ set that’s guaranteed to keep the audience moving and a thunderously aggressive, stripped-down approach to her own music, de Witte is a multifaceted artist of the finest degree, and her Movement set will undoubtedly deliver on the thunderous nature of techno that so many desire.

Time Warp unveils massive lineup for 2018

German techno gathering Time Warp released their lineup ahead of the festival’s 2018 edition. Since 1994, Time Warp has solidified itself as Germany’s premiere underground gathering, and has since become a globally recognized event. Featuring artists like Speedy JSven Väth, and Richie Hawtin over the years, the festival is known for pushing the envelope with stellar underground programming.

2018 will feature a diverse plethora of artists — both legends and rising players — such as Nina Kraviz, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Väth, Adam Beyer, Jamie Jones, Dixon, Seth Troxler, Ben Klock, and Tale of Us. 2018 is set to be a massive year for the Mannheim festival.

Awakenings announces monstrous two-day 2018 lineup

Awakenings Festival has announced its glorious 2018 lineup, which will descend upon the grounds of Spaarnwoude on June 30 and July 1.

Over 100 artists will perform over the two days with some of techno’s heaviest acts fronting the bill. Artists like Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Nina Kraviz, Sven Väth, and more, are some of the prime stalwarts on the bill. Awakenings will also see an equal dosage of techno’s ever-rising stalwarts like Job Jobse, Amelie Lens, Charlotte de Witte, and Dax J making their Awakening debuts.

Richie Hawtin will also be in attendance, bringing his special CLOSE concept to The Netherlands for the first time ever. Other notable acts include Marcel Dettmann, Joseph Capriati, Kölsch, Maceo Plex — who will be bringing his Mosaic concept to Awakenings for the first time ever — Ben Klock, Jamie Jones, Ricardo Villalobos, and Seth Troxler.

As expected, Awakenings Festival will be going above and beyond in their groundbreaking production. Attendees can expect top-of-the-line stage design, particularly in the open air areas of the festival.

How Day For Night festival achieved curatorial excellence

Houston, Texas’ Day For Night festival has established itself as an unconventional, hyper-sensory utopia. Bolstering an exemplary menu of avant-garde talent, the festival satiates thousands all while blurring the boundaries of performance and offering the utmost in aural phenomena in its industrial warehouse setting.

Day For Night prided itself on its snapshot booking in its third year, by and for the experimentally-inclined. Enlisting artists like Nina Kraviz, Kaytranada, Justice, Jlin, Jamie xx, Mount Kimbie, Solange, REZZNine Inch NailsTyler, the Creator, and Thom Yorke, among others, the gathering has situated itself as an unorthodox standout from an at times mundane, and largely counterfeit American festival circuit.

In its immersively emblematic nature, Day For Night’s third edition was a polyamorous union of music, culture, and digital art. It was a multifarious destination, and offered its attendees a mode of escapism while simultaneously defying how they explored their own, as well as others’ relationships with art and reality.

Those who attended were immersed in an epicenter of capitalism’s desolation, i.e the former Barbara Jordan Post Office, only to enter a sprawling industrial wonderland; complete with capacious lasers, fog machines, and immersive visual art open to infinite interpretations. Despite its growing pains, Day For Night was an unparalleled destination in the American festival circuit, protruding the landscape with its singularity in 2017, as it likely will in years to come, too.

Embracement of Reflection: Houston & Beyond

It would be naive to ignore how Houston’s rampantly evolving cultural and developmental environment shaped Day For Night. A look at almost any sect of the city points to hyper-gentrification and a lack of zoning restrictions that are rendering a city of cultural depth increasingly unrecognizable. Festivals have the potential to be the 21st-century’s greatest linking apparatus, and Day For Night embraced multiple methods of coupling reflection in an immensely immersive fashion. Summits delved into socio-political discourse by way of Laurie Anderson, Chelsea Manning, Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, and more. The gathering challenged its attendees toward an attainment of outward-awareness.

Woven into the very seams of artistic discourse at Day For Night was a thread on how the world’s 24-hour loops and radical advances in technology and communication are seamlessly moving faster than behavioral evolution, rendering many helpless in the interim. In a hyper-connected sect of the world, it’s ironically never been easier for one to feel helpless. Day For Night ruminated on how these very advancements can work to foster connections and discoveries in the world which will propel us further as a collective entity.

Post HTX Served As A Model Venue

“The way one sees things, and the expectations one brings to a performance, or any art form, really, is completely determined by the venue,” articulated David Byrne of the seminal group, The Talking Heads.

This phenomenon of a concert space shaping context, and in turn, enjoyment, is explored in Byrne’s book How Music Works. Surely, the way in which performances are perceived en masse is in relation to the space they’re experienced in. At times this is an obvious element. Take the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, for example. Burning Man’s sustenance relies on the desert space it resides in, and while this may be an extreme example, space is becoming a deeply entwined element in the worldwide festival circuit. The relationship between attendees and venues is why scenes blossom, and it’s why destination festivals are becoming increasingly popular.

Day For Night’s decision to place a hyper-sensorial paradise across four stages in a dimly lit, abandoned post office was a masterful one. Ironically, the nucleus of the performance venue were the veins of the warehouse, many of which contained captivating art installations. Unlit hallways that separated the “blue” stage from the intimately circular “yellow” stage, for example, beckoned an art form in themselves. For in these empty spaces, attendees prepared to ascend into visual or aural titillation. Whether it be disco balls adorned from a ceiling in netting, illuminating an entire room, moving mechanical cranes paired to ominous music, or synced screens around a ground level stage, the once-vacant warehouse was flooded with an innate intertwinement of senses.

Exemplary Curatorial Intent

A festival’s success begins in its curatorial intent. Founded in 2015 by the Free Press Houston and the New York-based creative agency Work-Order, Day for Night established itself as a visually immersive music and art festival from the very beginning. By embedding an exploration of the elements of light, space, and sound in its mission, Day For Night has transformed the festival landscape by combining new media art with envelope-pushing musicians. It may still be a young festival, but its surely created a unique experience. Day For Night’s careful selection of artistry and curatorial intent spoke to several sects of music, tech, and art lovers. Planning such a feat does not come without intent or without a deeply embedded audience understanding, though.

Appealing to the experimentally-inclined, for example, Day For Night brought forth Nina Kraviz, who’s on the heels of a momentous 2017, and largely regarded as a queen of techno. The festival also booked her трип (or Trip) labelmate Bjarki. Jlin, who’s set ironically rivaled her longtime purveyor Aphex Twin‘s 2016 DFN appearance, was also a standout experimental act. Her album, Black Origami, was an exemplary experimental record of the past year. Additionally, artists like Forest Swords, Jenny Hval, Shlomo, and Roni Size, all capitalized on the use of live sets as a medium for either outward, emotive release or social commentary.

Day For Night also booked standout artists like the esteemed Nine Inch Nails, who’ve been touring their immensely accessible EP Add Violence. Solange stunned in her Houston homecoming, merging art and popular culture with an affirming image of black pride and femininity.  Cardi B gave the 12-minute performance of the year, encapsulating a tumultuous 2017 with her ominous hit “Bodak Yellow.”  Tyler, The Creator gave a fervent performance which was brimming with tracks off his introspective new work Flower Boy. Pussy Riot, Pretty Lights, Justice, and REZZ — with her exceptional Mass Manipulation tour visuals — all expectedly stunned.

Day For Night displayed a keen understanding of the experimentally inclined, but also served as an apt pop culture gathering.In bringing together artists who continue to challenge the status quo, the festival’s curational intent was two-fold — displayed initially by the festival, and then, by each and every artist that performed.

Embedding a Festival Framework for the Future

As more and more festivals continue to emerge on the American festival circuit, immersive affairs such as Day For Night will continue to be a saving grace. It’s one thing to have an exemplary understanding of an audience, but as festival-goers grow into an increasingly digitized world, a means of facilitating connection through art and performance will be needed more than ever. Day For Night blurred the lines between its attendees and artists, it’s an environment where everyone was on an even playing field, as an observer, student of performance, and the outside world itself.

After an exciting string of announcements amidst the mau5’s final BBC Radio 1 residency show, the big cheese has thrilled fans with a more immediate gift. Fans of deadmau5’s radio show can relish in a complete collection of the music the artist slung out over the course of the last year thanks to the amusingly-named Spotify playlist “for a lack of a better playlist.”

From the music of Pryda, Gallya, ATTLAS, No Mana, Josh Butler, Rinzen, and many more, Mau5trap‘s gathered together the show’s complete 207-track long list that’s plenty easy to get lost in for 22 hours and 42 minutes if one feels so inclined.
