When Haywyre‘s “Tell Me” first came out last November, I was immediately hooked. It’s effortlessly funky, incorporating Haywyre’s own vocoder-filtered vocals and array of bright and blissful synth and keyboard elements. As part of a set of remixes, Notaker is the latest to take on the groovy tune. The St. Louis producer has put his own moody, atmospheric spin on the original, packing a serious punch with dramatic builds and hefty bass. It gives an entirely different tone to the piece, and it’s breathtakingly powerful.

Disco overlords Goshfather and Aylen are at it again. The duo have a joint two-track EP out, featuring the previously released “Found You” and the debut of “Coastin’.” The tune seeks to continue the effortless, sun-soaked tone of the summer months, incorporating a retro melody and carefree lyrics to move the steady bassline along. It’s hard not to move your feet to this one.

Liquicity mainstay Maduk is back with new heat. The Dutch producer teamed up with Calixte to create a truly infectious tune. “Everytime” seems subdued enough in the beginning, but steadily builds into a mighty drum ‘n’ bass song. A piano melody and rushing beat carry Calixte’s vocals beautifully from start to finish. “Everytime” is a tune that’s as alluring as its hypnotic cover art.

Fans of Metrik have long anticipated the arrival of “Gravity.” The release is the first time Metrik has ever featured his own vocals, and the addition rounds out what I believe is one of his best releases in recent history. “This track represents a new wave of music I’ve been developing using my voice, guitar & synthesisers and is the purest expression of my sound yet,” Metrik said of the release.

UKF is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and with it comes an exclusive set of singles and EP from the notable platform. The latest of these is Kove‘s “Le Retour,” a drum ‘n’ bass number with cheery horns and an irresistible overall retro style. It’s quite a swerve from its predecessor, “Motor,” which had a decidedly darker feel to it, but the difference in the songs just demonstrates Kove’s ridiculously wide range when it comes to production and sound design.

There’s just something about drum ‘n’ bass that’s always spoken to my soul. I remember hearing my first Pendulum song a decade ago and thinking “what on earth is this, and where can I get more?”

The genre began making its way into the electronic music sphere in the early 1990s, right around the time I was born. Its rapid breakbeats took over London and Bristol, ramping up the jungle and rave scene to 160-180 BPM. While still more widespread in the UK to this day, the genre has slowly trickled into the United States EDM scene. We still have a long way to go before drum ‘n’ bass artists are regularly installed as main stage performers at major US festivals, but there’s so much to discover and embrace in the US drum ‘n’ bass scene (I see you, Flite and Boxplot). There’s also an endless stream of quality dnb being churned out overseas, with imprints like RAM Records, Hospital Records, and Liquicity Records as strong as ever in their supporters and fan base.

I regularly tell people that have never really gotten into drum ‘n’ bass to just try. It’s a diverse and ever-evolving genre, full of sub-genres and offshoots. I guarantee you’ll find something you like in some format. Dig through the 100-song playlist I’ve compiled to celebrate 100 installments of this series to see if there’s something there for you!

Thank you, drum ‘n’ bass, for your tireless energy, emotive vocals, and the ability you always have to yank me out of a bad mood and reignite my love for electronic music in today’s day and age. Here’s to you, and the brilliant artists who create you.

Metrik has returned with his first single since September’s “Dawnbreaker” on Hospital Records. Haunting vocals rise gradually in “Hackers,” building to the racing drop. This slightly frantic-feeling four-minute journey has an almost post-apocalyptic dystopian feel to it, which makes sense more as the artist explains the background behind the tune. “I made this track to be a techy dancefloor piece exploring my Y2K cyberpunk influences,” Metrik says of the release.

Just weeks after the release of his first release in many months, “Cocaine Girl,” Goldroom has delivered yet another single, titled “Yellow Flowers.” He teams up with vocalist Mereki for the spirited tune, noting its importance to him in his production process. “This song is special to me because writing it broke me through a barrier and brought me back to my first love in dance music – French house,” Goldroom said in a tweet. “Yellow Flowers” is a sun-drenched ray of sunshine, perfect to usher dance music fans into the year’s warmer months. Mereki’s vocals complement Goldroom’s production perfectly, coming together for a groovy French house number that’s guaranteed to stay with the listener long after the beat has faded out.

It’s been 25 years since Kurt Cobain‘s death, and artists across the musical spectrum have taken time this week to honor the late great Nirvana singer. One such artist is Grabbitz, who’s released a “revival” of “All Apologies,”one of his favorites. “My childhood contained a lot of sounds, but one that will never escape me is the sound of Nirvana,” he said in his accompanying music video‘s description. “From the earliest I can remember, they’ve changed the way I look at and create music.” Grabbitz’s re-imagining of the 1993 song is raw and and emotion-soaked, with his passionate vocals soaring over the instrumentals.

Chicago native Summer Was Fun has created an homage to one of the Windy City’s most recognizable streets, Lake Shore Drive. While many of the songs under his Summer Was Fun moniker are more subdued, Summer Was Fun uses inspiration drawn from his city to explore elements of trance and future bass. Cascading melodies fall both gracefully and furiously at different drops of the tune, as the producer weaves between styles and focal points. The tune ends as it begins: with a simple, graceful piano melody.

Mr FijiWiji and Matt Van‘s new Monstercat single is the perfect note to end on. The two artists have categorized the song as “chillout,” and the description is an accurate one. With a focus on Van’s captivating harmonies to Mr FijiWiji’s top-notch production, “Enough” paints a serene soundscape of lush instrumentals and wistful vocals. These longtime collaborators have consistently made magic together over the years, from “Tomorrow” to “Andromeda” to their joint Ed Sheeran cover.

Goshfather has a unique ability to see things in songs others never would or could. Flip Drake into a fiery disco track? Check. Up next? Lil Pump and Kanye West‘s raunchy “I Love It.” Going into this funk-ified remix, it’s hard to know what to expect. But like he did with “Nice For What,” Goshfather’s concocted a refreshing take on the wide-shouldered track. He kicks off with a steady-rocking bassline to back Lil Pump’s vocals, hinting at what’s to come with subtle horns. At the drop, he drenches his listener in the grooviest of beats, aiding to the retro atmosphere of the track with an irresistible horn melody. It’s brilliant.


Jaguar Dreams are continuing their recent slew of releases with the next from their arsenal: “Behind Those Clothes.” After a killer debut with their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” this New York trio are back with new original that oozes a smooth and sexy aura. With slick vocals and instrumentals that glide effortlessly behind them, it’s evident this newly formed group is swiftly paving a road to success. “Beauty has a way of momentarily conquering us, but stripping down to our essence is what makes us fall in love,” they said of the song’s release. “‘Behind Those Clothes’ can be sexual if you want it to be, but at its core, it’s about discovering truth through vulnerability.”


Beware: This is a catchy one. Micky Kojak’s “All That Acid” popped up on SoundCloud just days ago after premiering on Triple J and has since garnered attention from artists like San Holo, Robotaki, and Unlike Pluto. The up-and-coming Australian producer takes his listeners on a ride in this release, with infectious vocals and a funky warped synth melody leading to a beat that’s simultaneously laid-back and energizing. Though it clocks in at less than three minutes long, Kojak packs a powerful punch in “All That Acid,” ensuring it’ll be stuck in listeners’ heads for days to come.


Enschway‘s music typically skews trap, but not this time. For his latest, he’s reworked Golden Features‘ “Telescope” in drum & bass fashion. The rapid beat he’s crafted works impeccably with the track’s sultry vocals, tying the two together for an intense experience. This song, too, clocks in at less than three minutes, but Enschway wastes no time demonstrating his production versatility. This genre suits his music style and was met with enthusiasm in the comment section. “Finished this remix off a while back and thought I’d just chuck it up for everyone to enjoy instead of sitting on my hard drive doing nothing,” he said of the release.


My love of Metrik goes back many years. “Freefall” is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I have such respect for him as an artist. It’s no surprise that I fell in love with his newest production upon first listen. Metrik wrote “Dawnbreaker” for Forza Horizon 4, and it’s out on a Hospital Records compilation that also includes Fred V & Grafix, Etherwood, and more. It’s a gorgeous piece of music that builds a serene soundscape that sounds like what flying must feel like. His melodies are heavenly, and his sound design is unparalleled. Dimension to mix Fabriclive 98

London-based drum& bass producer, Dimension, known, among other things, for his residency at Amnesia in Ibiza, mixed his first official Fabriclive mix.

Stringing together a collection of 56 tunes from the likes of Skrillex, deadmau5, Andy C, Sub Focus, and Chase & Status, alongside a handful of exclusive productions, Dimension presents a definitive snapshot of drum-n-bass in 2018. Fabricive 98’s 56-strong tracklist also features 22 exclusives from its talented array of artists. Though listeners can expect a bass-brimming production, Dimension also spoke about how the energy of this mix isn’t solely of the dance floor.

“I wanted to make the mix special,” Dimension says in a press release. “I wanted it to represent my attitude towards the energy experienced at shows, but also appreciated the fact that the mix isn’t always going to be heard on a dance floor.”
