The Wu-Tang Clan’s New Hulu Show Is Beautiful Mythmaking

This post was originally published on this site

Wu-Tang-An-American-SagaThere are many, many reasons why I love rap music. One of those reasons, I have learned, is this: At a young and formative age, I had my mind blown by superhero comics. Many rappers — most of the best rappers — present themselves as flesh-and-blood superheroes. (In this, rappers are like action-movie stars or … More »

Joey-BadassThe Wu-Tang Clan have one of the greatest stories in American music, and we are currently seeing what happens when our present-day content providers get ahold of that story. Last month, Showtime aired the extremely watchable four-part documentary series Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics And Men. And last year, we got the news that … More »

Let Pi’erre Bourne Produce All The Rap Music

Most big-name producers have a tag — a quick soundburst that lets you know who you’re listening to and, ideally, makes the song a tiny bit more exciting. You know them when you hear them: “Just Blaaaaze!,” “If young Metro don’t trust you I’ma shoot you,” “Murda on the beats, so it’s not nice.” Usually, … More »

Open-Mike-EagleIt’s such an oddly specific and low-stakes flex: “I’ve been on every podcast that I listen to.” It’s also, presumably, an entirely true statement. If you’ve ever heard Open Mike Eagle on a podcast, you already know that he’s an ideal podcast guest: funny, gregarious, open-hearted, interested, informed enough to speak with some credibility on … More »

The Knocks dish LP release date, share music video for ‘Goodbyes’The Knocks Goodbyes Music Video

The Knocks are gearing up for a fall of funk, announcing their sophomore LP, New York Narcotic, and sharing a retro-tinged music video for “Goodbyes.”

The upcoming album is the duo’s first full-length offering since since 2016’s 55, which monstered playlists with hits like “Classic” and the Wyclef Jean-assisted “Kiss The Sky.” New York Narcotic promises more of the same when it drops September 28 on Neon Gold/Big Beat Records. The Knocks are already riding high on their hit Foster The People collab “Ride or Die,” which already sits 22 million streams and counting.

For their third single, which features none other than Wu Tang’s Method Man, the two draw upon their surprisingly checkered history as hip hop producers – Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, and Mobb Deep are just a few of the heavy hitters they counted as collaborators during the early-mid 2000s. “Goodbyes” sees the group’s own JPatt trading verses with Method over a horn laden funk house groove. The Knocks explained into the inspiration for the grainy music video:

“We wanted this video to be a nod to some of our favorite style videos we grew up watching. 90’s rap videos usually didn’t need more than a good stoop and a bunch of people having a good time, so we got some friends together and shot this in Brooklyn on an old VHS camera.  We love how much it captures the essence of NYC & how it’s a futuristic touch on classic hip-hop imagery; something we hoped to similarly achieve sonically with the song.”

The whole saga of Once Upon A Time In Shaolin gets more complicated all the time. It was weird enough when the Wu-Tang Clan decided to sell the one and only copy of the album for millions. It was weirder still when pharma price-gouging vampire Martin Shkreli bought the one and only copy. And it … More »
