Maya Jane Coles has released her new EP, Waves & Whirlwinds, through her label, I/AM/ME.

The multi-award winning producer sets the stage of the EP through the title track right from the get-go. “Waves & Whirlwinds” opens with delicate plucks of harp-like synths that harmonize with deep sliding waves. This combination of sound is built up by the stylized percussion that Coles has been mastering since she was a teenager. She displays her ability to fluidly string together house beats with snare-centered kick drums with perfect flow. Coles then showers the track with beatific vocals, giving a voice of hope over an otherwise peaceful yet dark sound.

The second track, “Don’t Leave,” brings up the floor under the listener’s feet. In the depth of sound, Coles allows a little more energy in this five-minute house number. By demanding the listener to “get your hands up,” she keeps one’s head above the water. The wavelengths have more length and serve as a solid transition between the inaugural title track and the rest of the EP.

“Other Side” holds the essence of Coles’ sound. Dark and eerie bass elevate the EP to greater heights, while staying reminiscent of “Waves & Whirlwinds.” The foreground creates a feeling of weightlessness, while the deep bass pulls the listener ever downwards. Coles again keeps the listener engaged through electronic flair sprinkled through the track, coupled with angelic vocals.

“Other Side” leads listeners to “Visionary,” where again Coles provides some repose from the ghostly feel of her more distinct tracks. She paves uprising, progressive synth chords with some funk stylized dubby bass.

In the final track “Isolate,” Coles finally lets the listener fully drown in the depths of dark, steady bass. Shattered percussion and fractured articulation create a true rounded Coles-style downtempo musical experience.

Maya Jane Coles returns to sultry deep house with the release of ‘Other Side’Maya Jane Coles E1529678350930

Maya Jane Coles has returned with her latest under her own name, “Other Side.” After some years of exploration across her dubbier alter ego, Nocturnal Sunshine, and lo fi electronica under Maya Jane Coles, “Other Side” is a triumphant return to the unique frame of deep house that she’s built her career on. Otherworldly and minimal, Coles shows her best in class sampling abilities and taste, in a song that progresses in such a soothing way it’s almost more of a dance floor lullaby. It’s a great reminder of why the London-based producer is so good at what she does, building tonal bass and intriguing vocal notes into a work of art.

“Other Side” is out now via Coles’s label I/AM/ME.

Maya Jane Coles showcases new ABSOLUTE remix with sultry new ‘Keep Me Warm’ EP

Maya Jane Coles showcases new ABSOLUTE remix with sultry new 'Keep Me Warm' EP

Maya Jane Coles played to her strengths with her mid-2017 release, Take Flight. Sweltering melodies and sultry lyrics led the way as Coles showcased an eclectic mix of her quintessential, off-kilter club sounds. Though playing to the strengths of others, seen quite apparently in her vocalist choices, is also a strong suit of Coles’.

Her latest work Keep Me Warm is a short four-track EP with tracks from Take Flight, including the original six-minute rendition of “Go On and Make It Through,” “A Chemical Affair,” and “Keep Me Warm.”

Ultimately, Coles is showcasing inventive rework of ABSOLUTE’s take on “Keep Me Warm,” and with a newly energetic take on the underground anthem the EP is lush and delightful, alluding to the poise of the artist even the second time around.

Exclusive: Vera Blue – Lady Powers (Maya Jane Coles Remix)

Australia singer/songwriter Vera Blue has seen tremendous success following the release of her 12-track album, Perennial. A standout selection from the LP, “Lady Powers” which also features up-and-comer Kodie Shane from Atlanta, is now slated for its very own remix EP, which includes a late night house interpretation of the track from the legendary Maya Jane Coles.

The award-winning UK producer gives the original a deeper bassline under distorted vocals, entrancing background leads, and steady club vibes. On the rework from Coles, Vera Blue said:

“Maya Jane Coles adds a more playful flavour to the song…I think it gives it more of a party vibe, which is really uplifting, but at the same time gives you an empowering feel.”

The Power Ladies Remix EP drops April 20, and is set to include additional remixes from TOKiMONSTA, Alice Ivy, and Maria Marcus. The remix EP is available for preorder here.
