Is “Old Town Road” a country song? This has been a contentious question throughout the song’s historically dominant run. Back when Lil Nas X’s viral smash was making its way up the charts, the song became a cause célèbre when Billboard removed it from the country chart on the grounds that it did … More »
“Pulling a Beyoncé” has always been a fairly elastic concept. Even when the phrase came into vogue at the end of 2013, when she surprise-released her self-titled visual album and, in her own words, “changed the game with that digital drop,” people were crediting her with both the surprise album trend … More »

Lil Nas X’s “Old Town” road is the #1 song in the country for the 15th week running. Part of its longevity has to do with how well Lil Nas X has been able to hold onto the cultural conversation via whatever wacky memes are currently blowing up on the internet. His latest … More »
The cross-over hit “Old Town Road” has been breaking records left and right and now. As it celebrates its 14th week as the #1 song in the country, Lil Nas X has unveiled a brand new remix of his viral single. Billy Ray Cyrus returns on the latest edition of “Old Town Road” which sees newly-added features from Mason Ramsey and Young Thug. The release may be the final push that “Old Town Road” needs in order to make pop-chart history; “Old Town Road” only needs to hold its #1 position for two more weeks before it ties both Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” as the most successful single of all time.
The latest “Old Town Road” remix welcomes Mason Ramsey —the yodeling kid who has seen his own streak with virality—as well as fellow Atlanta rapper Young Thug. The uncanny pair make perfect sense as recruits for Lil Nas X’s hit song —with Ramsey using his virality to catapult a country career by signing a label deal and even performing at Coachella, and Young Thug pushing boundaries with fashion as a vehicle.
Lil Nas X released his debut EP 7 at the end of June. The second track “Panini” has already enjoyed popularity.

We are watching pop-chart history unfold. Right now, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ singular country-rap crossover “Old Town Road” has been the #1 song in America for the past 14 weeks. If it makes it two more weeks, “Old Town Road” will tie two different songs — Mariah Carey … More »
Exactly one year ago, the internet was passing around a viral clip of an 11-year-old boy yodeling Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” in a Walmart. You had to commend the little fellow—his pre-teen pipes and his funny little cowboy getup were hilariously charming. Less than a month later, he’d be on stage with Whethan at Coachella and a fleeting internet joke would actually turn into the fifth grader from rural Illinois getting a record deal with Atlantic Records and the world being introduced to our new national treasure, Mason Ramsey.
Not old enough to be cancelled, and too young to fail, Mason Ramsey has climbed his way into the hearts of Americans over this last year. We came for “Famous” and then we just we stayed for the terrific memes. Now, a year later, it appears Ramsey and his bud Whethan are even in the studio together. What a time to be alive, right?

The timing couldn’t be better, too. With country music primed to have a huge moment in the sun, we’re sure glad Lil Hank Williams is around to ride that wave. Who knows? Maybe next year he’ll be brining Whethan out during his Coachella set. Revisit last year’s moment below.
One of the most surreal and iconic moments from last year’s Coachella was when Wethan brought out Mason Ramsey, who had just found viral fame for his Walmart yodeling video, for a song during his set at the Sahara Stage. The crowd absolutely ate it up. Turns out, the duo’s relationship has continued since that

I am sitting on a folding chair in the middle of a football field. A few dozen yards in front of me stand two video screens several stories high, each angled slightly toward its respective side of the stadium, converging at the center of the stage like two sides of a triangle. Things have gone quickly for Mason Ramsey, the yodeling kid from YouTube. A few short weeks ago, a viral of the 11-year-old kid went viral. Ramsey, a native of a small Illinois town called Golconda, was filmed in a Wal-Mart aisle, singing the Hank Williams oldie “Lovesick Blues” and, yes, yodeling. He went on Ellen. More »
