Hoodboi and Djemba Djemba team up for ‘Drowning’

LA-based producer Hoodboi lets loose another piece of his upcoming EP with “Drowning,” a collaborative track with seasoned EDM talent and Mad Decent mainstay Djemba Djemba out on Fool’s Gold Records.

The release follows Hoodboi’s smooth and sensual “Glide,” featuring Tkay Maidza, and comes ahead of his Breathing Room EP, slated for release May 22. Djemba, known for keeping a low profile, has written for and worked alongside some of the biggest acts in and out of the EDM domain, including Diplo, Justin Beiber, and Alison Wonderland.

“Drowning” is one part soulful, r&b ballad, seen through singer/songwriter Julius’s poignant vocals. However, simultaneously the track is an atmospheric display of Hoodboi and Djemba’s characteristically experimental production skills–seen through rippling, distorted sampling.

Colombian-born R&B singer-songwriter Kali Uchis has tapped Tyler, the Creator, funk maestro Bootsy Collins, and eclectic jazz outfit BadBadNotGood for her diversified new song, “After the Storm.”

Uchis is preparing to release her debut album this spring via Interscope/Virgin Records, of which this track will be a part of. “After the Storm” is not the first time Uchis and Tyler have worked together on a track, but its funky-melodrama is significantly more prominent than past collaborations “Aunt Wang Syrup Theme Song” or “PERFECT.” “If you need a hero / Just look in the mirror,” Kali sings, while Bootsy ad-libs for affective touch.

“We can find solace in the fact that we have to go through the bad stuff to truly get to the good,” Uchis said of “After the Storm” in a press statement. “Just because you’re losing at the moment doesn’t mean you’ve lost yet. The storm may be scary now but it’s how your flowers bloom later, and paradise is just beyond the rainbow.”

19-year-old singer/producer Demo Taped merges electronic with R&B on ‘Pack of Gum’

At just 19 years old, Demo Taped is set to become one of the most unique electronic producers in the game. His unique take on R&B infused electronic music has already garnered the up-and-coming producer over 7 million streams on Spotify.

His latest release, “Pack Of Gum,” is a pleasant mix of synth melodies, soft vocals and a light bass-line. The Atlanta native adds in looped vocal motifs as well as additional electro-nodes that culminates in an easy, euphoric listen for any setting. Covers are seemingly a poor fit in electronic music. The extra latitude afforded artists when they choose to remix a track — inherently giving them license to veer from the original as much or as little as they please — is eminently attractive and become something of an industry standard. What remixes don’t provide, however, is a window in an artist’s process and those who have influenced their sound and style.

William Crooks‘ cover of Cashmere Cat‘s “Quit,” featuring Ariana Grande, and Kanye West‘s “Wolves,” produced by Cashmere Cat and Sinjin Hawke, however, manages to split the difference between remix and cover.

Crooks illuminates influences that only become obvious with his explicit acknowledgement, and add depth to his soulful brand of singer-songwriter take on club music. Indeed, Crooks eschews a massive rework of both tracks, instead opting to maintain their basic structure and immerse them in his emotive style of production, with lush synths and rumbling bass providing a foundation for slightly auto-tuned vocals.

15-year-old singer-songwriter Billie Eilish released her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me, in August. Vince Staples, meanwhile, released Big Fish Theory, which was largely regarded as one of the best electronic hip-hop albums of the year. Now, the two mavens have connected on a new track “&Burn,” an alternative version to the Eilish-led “Watch.” “&Burn” is a slowly stoked track, and while Staples’ vocals are fleeting, they linger into a quite combustible effect.

Eilish recently told The FADER that Staples was her first choice of collaborator and that she had originally come out of the studio with two different take ideas for the track.“This version felt like it would be perfect with someone as a feature,” she said. “Vince Staples was my NUMBER 1 choice, so when we got him to hear it and he agreed to do, it was incredible and the verse he did is so mf good! He is a god and I’m excited for it to finally come out!”

Role Model releases melancholic ‘Arizona In The Summer’ EP

Portland, Maine based Tucker Pillsbury, better known as Role Model, has released his debut EP, Arizona In The Summer. The project is laden with brooding emotion and outfitted with a mercurial wardrobe of atmospheric dressings; experimenting with lo-fi sound, surf rock influences, and downtempo, Role Model’s first EP sees the 21 year old artist refine his own singular sound.

The puissant tug of anxiety is a common theme in the projects central focus. The EP’s production began during a period of time where Pillsbury was recovering from a life threatening ski accident, and subsequently broke both of his wrists right after healing from the first accident. “Desperately, I was in need for someone out there to understand me” reflects Pillsbury.

Songs “i don’t rly like u” and “stolen car” are downtrodden, emotive ballads in which Pillsbury layers sonic elements in hierarchal fashion. Simplicity and a forthright attitude towards the songwriting process are integral to the success of Arizona In The Summer, with Pillsbury forsaking ostentatious glamor for painfully relatable subject matter.

“Super model” is a washed out cleanse from the emotional purgation on the EP’s first two tracks, reflecting on a super gorgeous model and playing with the narrative of out-of-this-world beauty and the implications of such beauty on a societal level.

The project closes with the nostalgic synths on “never give up,” a heart throb ballad complete with 80s inspired drums and atmospheric keys. Arizona In The Summer is an apt effort at candid introspection, and Role Model makes it irresistible.

Xo sad is the latest artist to take on Post Malone‘s emotive hip-hop track “I Fall Apart,” off his 2016 album Stoney.

In fact, after an infallible rework from Slander, xo sad follows a slew of artists that have jumped on a variety of Post Malone’s heavy-hitting chart-toppers. Unlike their contemporaries, xo sad exudes an undeniably distinct undertaking.

Instantaneously, the track kicks off with a punk-meets-hip-hop style. Altered alternative rock-tinged vocals imbue a deeper sense of longing and devastation. Through the pairing of this vocal style and guitar chords after the drop, as opposed to the thumping bass of the original, xo sad points to the aptness of their moniker name, which is one we hope to see more from quite soon.

Fans of Frank Ocean can now practice “Self Control” while cruising at 120 MPH or committing a number of virtual crimes. Unfortunately, that particular Ocean track’s not on his new virtual radio station, but, Ocean’s radio station on Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online does boast a “Pretty Sweet” collection.

GTA’s Doomsday Heist update brought access to Ocean’s new station, which he’d only recently teased on his Tumblr. Los Santos 97.8 FM features six of Ocean’s songs, including “Provider,” “Ivy,” “Crack Rock,” “Chanel,” “Nights,” and “Pretty Sweet.”

The station’s hosted by Vegyn, Roof Access, and Federico Aliprandi, who also hosted Ocean’s Beats 1 show blonded RADIO, which debuted earlier this year.

Ocean’s new station candidly highlights his knack for the dance genre, bringing together a collection of heavy hitters from Aphex Twin, Burial, and more. Los Santos 97.8 FM is a marvelous cap on his year of savory surprises.
