The Knocks released “Colors” in the final days of summer 2019, seeming to wish farewell to warm-weather days with the dreamy and bright single. A few months later, remixes for the tune have begun to trickle out, including this latest one from Robokid. The Los Angeles-based producer has kicked the song into a new key and injected it with energy. It’s infectious.

Scottish disco maestro Last Island has been on a roll in 2019, churning out more than a dozen tunes since February. Among them are his Sustain EP and an otherworldly rendition of Madeon‘s “All My Friends,” and he follows them up with a remix of Ellis and ILY‘s “Falling Through.” He’s infused the single with more electro and disco elements, giving it an entirely new feel.

Vancouver duo The Funk Hunters are back with another effortlessly funky masterpiece. They’ve tapped the talents of A.Skillz for “Body Move,” and the result is a piece that’s captivating both in its beats and in its vocals. It combines elements across the electronic music spectrum, encouraging listeners of all persuasions to embrace it in its entirety.

Friction‘s music is timeless, and his deep involvement in the drum ‘n’ bass community has led more than two decades worth of fans to embrace his artistry. The former BBC Radio 1 host takes to his own Elevate Records to release his newest tune: the much-anticipated “Good To Me.” Powerful female vocals lead the introduction, building steadily into the hefty drum ‘n’ bass rhythms the producer’s become so well-known for.

Camo & Krooked never shy away from pushing the drum ‘n’ bass envelope. Their incorporation of different styles of dnb make singles like their latest, “Set It Off,” make their music intriguing to the ear. American rapper Jeru The Damaja lends his fearless vocals to the verses, largely stepping back on the chorus to let the unique drop shine through.

It’s most important day of the week: New Music Friday. With the overwhelming amount of tunes hitting the airwaves today, Dancing Astronaut has you covered with the latest edition of The Hot 25.

At long last, Madeon’s sophomore LP, Good Faith, has arrived. Though it’s been long-anticipated, the electronic music community didn’t have time to anticipate new deadmau5, which dropped out of thin air on Nov. 15. Dillon Francis’ Magic Is Real makes a full appearance alongside these, tapping artists like Vera Hotsauce for “Barely Breathing.” MK and Sonny Fodera link with Raphaella for “One Night,” and Chris Lake and Solardo “Free Your Body” on their latest. GRiZ’s Bangers[4].Zip has arrived, featuring songs like “Tiger Kingdom Space Camp,” and MJ Cole’s remixed Flume and Vera Blue’s “Rushing Back.” Friction delivers some drum ‘n’ bass goodness on “Good To Me,” and Eli Brown puts his own spin on Dom Dolla’s “San Frandisco.” Snails, Kill The Noise, and Sullivan King team up for a new mega-collab, “Front 2 Back,” and NGHTMRE and Gunna bring the heat with “CASH COW.” Gammer returns to Monstercat for “Brostep Strikes Back,” and Klingande releases his long-awaited debut LP, The Album. Oliver Heldens links with Firebeatz, Schella, and Carla Monroe for “Lift Me Up,” and Dirty South and Marion Amira prove a formidable force on “All I Need.” Dillon Nathaniel goes deep on a new tech house heater, “Do It Again,” and R3HAB teams up with ZAYN and Jungleboi on “Flames.”

As each week brings a succession of new music from some of electronic music’s biggest artists, here’s a selection of tracks that shouldn’t be missed this NMF.

There’s just something about drum ‘n’ bass that’s always spoken to my soul. I remember hearing my first Pendulum song a decade ago and thinking “what on earth is this, and where can I get more?”

The genre began making its way into the electronic music sphere in the early 1990s, right around the time I was born. Its rapid breakbeats took over London and Bristol, ramping up the jungle and rave scene to 160-180 BPM. While still more widespread in the UK to this day, the genre has slowly trickled into the United States EDM scene. We still have a long way to go before drum ‘n’ bass artists are regularly installed as main stage performers at major US festivals, but there’s so much to discover and embrace in the US drum ‘n’ bass scene (I see you, Flite and Boxplot). There’s also an endless stream of quality dnb being churned out overseas, with imprints like RAM Records, Hospital Records, and Liquicity Records as strong as ever in their supporters and fan base.

I regularly tell people that have never really gotten into drum ‘n’ bass to just try. It’s a diverse and ever-evolving genre, full of sub-genres and offshoots. I guarantee you’ll find something you like in some format. Dig through the 100-song playlist I’ve compiled to celebrate 100 installments of this series to see if there’s something there for you!

Thank you, drum ‘n’ bass, for your tireless energy, emotive vocals, and the ability you always have to yank me out of a bad mood and reignite my love for electronic music in today’s day and age. Here’s to you, and the brilliant artists who create you.

Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes serves as a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.

The Him have teamed up with songstress Maria Hazell on their new single, “Found Me,” and AC Slater brings “Final Fantasy” to his own Night Bass with Kaleena Zanders. Hardwell brings the sounds of the season with “Summer Air,” and Vintage & Morelli deliver listeners to the heavens with “Ascension.” SNBRN brings a plethora of new tunes on his new album, Solé, and Henry Fong and Rawtek join force on “IRIE.” Kai Wachi’s new Kannibalen album brings with it enticing collaborations like “Strangers” with Grabbitz, and Alexander Lewis brings the brass with his new single, “Win the War.” Kramder takes to Uprise Music to release his new tune, “No Time To Be,” and Prince Fox keeps “Runnin” through new music. Friction drops his formidable new Disconnected EP, and TWO LANES, too, release a new body of work in their Drifting EP.

Talented Monstercat standout Richard Caddock has reimagined himself as an artist with the debut of a new moniker, Keepsake. His first release, “This Time Around” featuring Slyleaf, is a lighthearted, bouncing track that’s highlighted by a merry melody and spirited vocals from himself and Slyleaf. Its carefree atmosphere is reminiscent of old-school Owl City tracks and marks his first release on the label since 2016.


Continuing on the multi-week of loving and promoting the forthcoming Destinations, Vol. 1 EP, Vorso delivers “Crisis.” This intense, four-minute ball of energy is marks the fourth release on the five-track EP. It’s a drum & bass slice of heaven, smashing and exceeding expectations with its forceful, bass-heavy tendencies.


In mid-August, Faux Tales tapped vocalist Ingrid Lukas for an alluring cinematic experience he calls “Rise Now.” Lukas’ voice captivates immediately, drawing the listener in with her wistful singing. Faux Tales backs up her vocals with astoundingly stellar production, crafting a mesmerizing soundscape of dramatic interludes and delicate piano melodies.


Friction‘s “Running” featuring Raphaella may have come out last October, but I’ll confess: I didn’t discover it until the release of the UK drum & bass maestro’s debut album on Sept. 7. All of Connections is beautifully constructed, highlighted by entrancing standouts like this one. Connections has been four years in the making, and it’s well worth the wait.


In an interesting turn of events leading up to their album release, The Midnight have unveiled an instrumental track called “Arcade Dreams.” Kids‘ other releases so far have been vocal-centric, but “Arcade Dreams” doesn’t need vocals to stand out. It’s beautiful as it is. Twinkling synths rise and fall in a dreamy pattern, invoking waves of nostalgia that wash over the listener from start to finish.

Barely Alive‘s latest is completely unexpected and so unbelievably funky. The dubstep hard-hitters can generally be found creating some of the filthiest wobbles in today’s scene, but their brand new LP sees them painting a canvas of incredibly varied genres. From this groovy collaboration with Great Good Fine Ok to drum & bass on “Warrior” and hip-hop on “Ride Out,” the duo are taking their style to new heights in such a refreshing way.


Prismo gets down and dirty on his latest release, “Solo.” This power anthem puts Jason Derulo’s “Riding Solo” to shame, packing a much grittier, stronger punch. Prismo’s categorized this track as alternative rock, and it certainly leans much more than way than his previous electronic releases. Turns out this is the first of many new tracks in the Austin, Texas artist’s next chapter. “This is the first single from the next chapter of Prismo,” he says in the track’s description. “It’s a statement of my evolution and the passion behind my project.”


And from here on out, we merge into full-fledged drum & bass. New Music Friday has been good to the drum & bass community, delivering heaters from T & Sugah, Matrix & Futurebound, Friction, and so many more. This first one from T & Sugah is the second part of their new two-track Viper Recordings EP. The 3/4 pattern makes for an interesting touch, catching the listener’s ear with its unique beat. Subtle builds and detail-oriented breaks beautifully showcase why this Dutch duo has been on the rise.


Viper Recordings has also delivered the latest from the UK’s famed Matrix & Futurebound: “TARDIS.” They build anticipation impeccably in the introduction, leading the listener down a dark hallway straight into a frenzied drum & bass beat. It’s vivid and eerie, packed with intense, pounding bass and a furious melody. Unfortunately, it’s not out in its entirety yet, but the two-minute clip already previews the immaculate sound design these two demonstrate time and time.


Described by Pete Tong as “one of the big dogs,” Drum & Bass Hall of Famer Friction never ceases to thrill. In his latest, the Brighton producer has remixed UK legends The Prodigy and their song “Need Some1.” This rework is perhaps one of the most intense and creative drum & bass tracks I’ve heard in recent months, further hyping The Prodigy’s forthcoming No Tourists album, due out later this year.

This is the track I’ve been most excited about this week. Hot off his release with Bingo Players earlier this year, Los Angeles producer Goshfather returns with a dirty disco remix of Drake‘s “Nice For What.” He cranks up the original’s intensity and adds an irresistibly groovy beat. It’s impossible to sit still during this one, and I’m probably responsible for half of the plays on it. I’m not sorry.


Los Angeles label Silk Music continues to tap some of the most creative and emotive pieces of work for their releases, thrilling listeners with each new feature. One of this week’s is Polish producer Andromedha’s two-track return to the label: “Luminosity” and “Purple Skies.” While both are beautifully atmospheric progressive house pieces, “Luminosity” in particular caught my ear, with its airy, heavenly feel drawing me in each time I listened.


UK drum & bass maven Friction turns up the heat in his latest: a collaboration with vocalist JP Cooper. “Friction,” out now on Elevate Records, masterfully combines fiery drum & bass production with impassioned vocals from JP Cooper. The award-winning producer demonstrates time and time again that there’s a reason he’s garnered so many accolades over the past several years: he’s endlessly talented and knows exactly the right formula for the perfect drum & bass piece.


Sinden continues to expand on his Houseline imprint with the release of Houseline Vol. 3 last week, featuring three tracks that flex the grooving g-house muscles of the compilation’s featured aritsts. While the volume’s first two tracks highlight artists CLB, Steve Darko and Danny Kolk, Sinden himself teams up with Wongo on the final track. The pair have crafted a deep, powerful house track, and it’s a true treat.


Disco Fries are letting the good times roll with a remix of Stanaj and Ty Dolla $ign to kick off the weekend. They’ve put their signature feel-good stamp on Stanaj and Ty Dolla $ign’s original piece of work, decking their remix out with a catchy background melody and rocking beat. The New York duo are on a roll this year, following up their self-titled November EP with funky originals like “The Cut” and “U Make Me.”

As he gears up for the release of his debut FABRICLIVE mix, UK drum & bass savant Dimension is drumming up excitement in a big way. As if the stacked track list for the forthcoming mix isn’t enough, Dimension also recently tapped friends Friction, Culture Shock and 1991 for a nearly two-hour back-to-back rooftop set. Fans of drum & bass will find an impeccable blend of new twists and turns on classics in the lengthy compilation, along with a dynamic array of unreleased songs.

FABRICLIVE 98 is out May 25.
