The Radar 100: Mixed by Whethan

The Radar celebrates its 100th episode with none other than Whethan, whose mix is his set from the legendary Red Rock Ampitheatre. The Chicago based producer ascended into the electronic music scene at the age of 17 thanks to his remix of “XE3” by Mssingno, which has garnered over 9 million plays on SoundCloud to date. Whethan may not be of legal drinking age, but that isn’t stopping him from headlining some of the top venues in the U.S. and collaborating with the likes of Charli XCX and Flux Pavillion.

His upbeat Radar mix showcases his ability to seamlessly blend mainstream pop and rap music into surprising electronic drops that blend perfectly to create a cohesive and dynamic set. From riding in the car to pre-gaming on Saturday night, Whethan’s mix is the perfect backdrop for multi-genre loving listeners.

The electronic music is extremely diverse in this day and age. With hundreds of sub genres sprouting up and hundreds of new, young artists coming out with tracks everyday, it is hard to pick out the winners sometimes. Other times, it’s more obvious. In the case of Whethan, it is pretty easy. The 17 year old Chicago-based producer has already enlisted the likes of Skrillex and Flux Pavilion as two of his biggest fans, and that’s extremely impressive for someone his age, but he definitely deserves it seeing as his records are addicting gems. It is safe to say he is definitely a winner.

The 17 year old protégé has made his come up making remixes that put him leagues ahead of other future bass producers. Although you can see where his inspiration is generated from, listing the likes of Skrillex, Flume, and his buddies Louis The Child as his biggest inspirations for his future bass project, he separates himself from the rest of the pack with his own distinguished sound. You hear the classic filtered, saw wave synths mixed and arranged in a refreshing new way. Each of his songs have their own unique future bass niche that they perfectly fall into while still maintaining the feel and ambiance that is undeniably Whethan.

After building his following solely off making infectious remixes, Whethan is now ready to spread his wings producing some original tracks. He recently was interviewed by Pile Rats, where he gave a sample of his first original track (you can listen to it below) coming out August 12th. He claims that this new original track, titled “Can’t Hide,” is the first of many, including future collaborations with Flux Pavilion and Skrillex. Along with the announcement of his new original track, Whethan said, “The rest of this year is going to be a big year and I’m very excited about it. I get to finish the US summer playing some really cool festivals…” If the kid has support from papa Skrill at age 17, I’m excited to see what he will be making in his 20s. Check back with us for updates on this kid’s promising career.
