Boys Noize caps off a busy week in his realm with a return to Diynamic, where he’s put out a two-piece EP under his Elax moniker. Bescio marks his third time on Solomun‘s famous imprint, following his debut via the Four To The Floor series and his subsequent Sueño EP.

Kicking off on its title track, listeners enter into a menacing soundscape marked by minor note progressions and prominent bassline that anchors it in the shadows. A slow build leads way into an equally unsettling climax, where loud synth roars assist in “Bescio’s” goosebump-inducing abilities. That being said, things take a 180° turn in “With Lou,” which brings beachy, carefree imagery to mind. Its cheery disposition and pleasant synth choice make it ideal for rinsing during the daytime hours.

Bescio arrives just days after “Midnight Hour,” Boys Noize’s long-awaited track with Skrillex and Ty Dolla $ign. Expect to hear continued work in the hip-hop and crossover space from Boys Noize, who is also credited on A$AP Rocky’s upcoming album.

Paring down an entire year’s worth of songs is no easy feat.

2018 saw the explosion of songs like ZEDD‘s “The Middle” and Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa‘s “One Kiss,” dominating both the dance music charts and the radio airwaves. Ear-catching tracks like these, along with fan favorites like FISHER‘s persuasive “Losing It” and Anti Up‘s entertaining “Pizza” wiggled their way into festival sets around the world and — love them or hate them — stood out as notable tracks that do their part in immortalizing this whirlwind of a year.

We also saw a creative collective of remixes surface in 2018, including Rinzen‘s compelling take on deadmau5 and Rob Swire‘s hit “Monophobia” and Skrillex‘s intoxicating rendition of Travis Scott‘s “Sicko Mode.” We celebrated the return of Gesaffelstein with “Reset” and welcomed new projects from Diplo in LSD and Silk City. We welcomed collaborations from Ekali, Medasin, and Elohim in “Forever,” Tiësto, Dzeko, Post Malone, and Preme in platinum smash hit “Jackie Chan,” and ZHU and Tame Impala in “My Life.”

Ultimately, though, we’ve narrowed 2018 down to 30 tracks that stole our hearts and smashed streaming records.

Boys Noize is amid the launch of his new solo side project, ELAX, and since the new moniker’s tantalizing debut, “Reaktor” on Solomun‘s Diynamic imprint over the summer, fans have been eager to find out what Alex Ridha actually has up his sleeve. Now, it appears the project is ready to fully materialize with the announcement of Boys Noize’s debut performance as ELAX. Ridha will take the stage at Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles on December 7 to unveil his new alter ego. Shortly thereafter, ELAX will also sail on The Friendship‘s maiden voyage with longtime friend and collaborator Destructo‘s AMFAMFAMF brand.

ELAX’s live debut will come exactly one month after the BNR head honcho’s first delivery under the new banner, recently dropping his two-track Sueño EP as the first real insight into the project’s sonic direction. Now, Ridha is upping the ante, proctoring a full hour-long mix as part of The Friendship’s running mix series to hype both the debut club appearance and the following ELAX performance aboard Destructo’s new floating festival.

Anytime a prodigious artist unveils a new side project, the launch generates a plethora of anticipation, but also carries with it a degree of apprehension. Too often, the producer’s “alter-ego” may seem to be either needless extension that differs little from his or her primary endeavor. Or, worse yet, the artist risks losing steam by exploring a new sound that just doesn’t capture listeners quite as resoundingly.

Despite ample opportunities, both of these fates have eluded Alex Ridha. The German auteur has managed to inject the signature stylistic traits of his Boys Noize legacy into his various auditory avocations without becoming stale in the slightest. Indeed, his inimitable presence in Handbraekes, Dog Blood, and Octave Minds — his groups with Mr. Oizo, Skrillex, and Chilly Gonzales, respectively — is easily recognizable, yet all of the aforementioned are entirely distinct from the timbre of his solo work.

Despite Ridha’s veteran “super-duo” status, he conquered a new challenge in August, when he debuted his first solo alias, ELAX. When news arose that Boys Noize would be producing under a different moniker for Solomun’s Diynamic imprint, it was unclear how the project would fare. The notion of Boys Noize adopting a deeper, more subdued outlook on house and techno was endlessly scintillating, but how would he temper his fundamental industrial and acidic proclivities? How would he bridge the gap between Hamburg and Berlin?

When Ridha released his first ELAX single, “Reaktor,” in August, the result spoke for itself; his Diynamic debut retained the raunchiness which built his audience, but the restraint which built that of the track’s backing label. Still, one may have wondered how the project would progress without becoming one-note.

With the release of his first ELAX EP, Alex Ridha has staunchly removed any doubts which may have lingered regarding the trajectory of his new pseudonym. Spanning two tracks, Sueño isn’t a long record, but it provides a comprehensive outline of what Ridha’s vision for ELAX seems to be.

In the EP’s titular track, Ridha ventures into completely new territory. Where one might categorize the bulk his Boys Noize oeuvre as nightmarish, “Sueño” evokes the sonic sensations of the sedate, yet mystifying dream which its title (the Spanish for “Dream”) suggests. Atop quasi-Balearic percussions, Ridha weaves soothing chord progressions with eldritch top-line synths, which possess just a hint of the frenzied sounds that often dominate the Boys Noize project. Yet, undeniably, ELAX is something new.

In “Rhumba,” the EP’s second track, Ridha veers toward a higher energy, yet simultaneously, further away from his signature stylistic tendencies. Even the most well-versed Boys Noize fan would lack the slightest clue of its origin upon a blind listening. Containing only minimal synthesis and sampling, “Rhumba” draws its essence from its house-driven rhythms, which would would find themselves more at home in a chic club than at a raucous warehouse.

Suffice it to say, in Ridha’s first EP as ELAX, he impeccably makes his way from Berlin to Hamburg, leaving the listener to daydream about what comes after Sueño.

Boys Noize is shaking things up a bit, debuting an intriguing new project known as ELAX. Side-stepping his signature brand of warehouse-ready industrial techno, Alex Ridha’s new ELAX moniker bears an immediate resemblance to Boys Noize’s unmistakable production acumen, while leaning in its own, different tech-inspired direction. Furthermore, the project’s first release comes by way of Solomun‘s Diynamic imprint as part of the label’s Four on the Floor collection, as opposed to Ridha’s own venerated Boys Noize Records. On ELAX’s inaugural debut, “Reaktor,” Berlin’s genre-blurring mastermind makes starting from the ground up sound easy — but what else would one expect?

Pulsing synthwork and swinging percussion come together while textured electro rhythms hiss and buzz across the nearly seven-minute stomper. From menacing acid house takes with Dog Blood to lovably bizarre Handbraekes fare, Ridha’s always kept up a healthy repetoire of alternative outlets and ELAX is proving to be an exciting addition to Boys Noize already decorated career.
