Donald Glover surprised a lot of people Wednesday when he announced a pop-up fundraiser supporting Andrew Yang’s longshot bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. After Thursday’s event, the Yang Gang revealed something even more surprising: Glover is joining their ranks in an official capacity. More »
Since the beginning of Childish Gambino, I’ve tried to meet Donald Glover where he’s at. Across his career, the TV-writer-turned-TV-star-turned-rapper has released a string of projects that showed potential without a whole lot of promise. His music was wide-ranging, with bountiful ideas, but none of them were enacted with much finesse. Most of them arrived … More »
The saga of Chris Gaines is a truly weird, inexplicable, generally forgotten episode in music-business history. In the late ’90s, Garth Brooks was one of the biggest stars in the United States, and he was arguably the biggest star in country music history. So he took a big swing. He introduced a whole new alter-ego, … More »
Disney’s big not-really-live-action live-action remake of The Lion King is coming out in a week, and right now, Disney is in the process of unveiling it. Last night, that meant that Beyoncé released “Spirit,” a new song that’ll appear on the soundtrack. And last night, it meant that Donald Glover was on Jimmy … More »
Donald Glover‘s first foray into short film, Guava Island was an artistic focal point of Coachella‘s 2019 programming. Starring Rihanna alongside Glover, the flick first premiered at at the Indio Valley affair and was also broadcasted on Coachella’s YouTube live stream. Shortly thereafter, Guava Island became available on Amazon Prime .
Now, Glover revisits the visual production via five new behind-the-scenes videos that canvass the different locations in Cuba where Glover and his team shot the film, the influences who assisted and advanced Glover’s creative vision, and the Cuban traditions that guided Guava Island’s choreography.
“At its best (or maybe just its most accessible), art is ingenuity,” Glover said in a statement. “I had the pleasure of experiencing this spirit of ‘making what you must with what you have’ collaborating with Cuba’s talented and abundant artists over the course of filming Guava Island. The artist’s endeavor has always been the manifesting of an idea, then forcing a society to recognize, or maybe just question, its value. These artists have not only inspired me to examine what we value on a day-to-day basis, but also to move with intention in the world with the childlike ingenuity that Cuba seems to offer every moment. I’m very proud to be able to share their stories with you.”
Guava Island is the product of Glover’s conceptual interplay with Cuban residents, and with director and frequent collaborator Hiro Murai. Murai is memorable for his work with Glover on the Grammy Award-winning music video for “This Is America,” and on various episodes of Atlanta, Glover’s comedy-drama television series.
As Disney love themes go, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” is pretty decent: Not the best, not the worst. It works well as performed by Pumbaa and Timon in The Lion King and is smoother but a bit more cloying when Elton John belts it out on the official soundtrack. And now we get … More »
Childish Gambino has had a big week. He headlined the first day of Coachella, debuted a new song, and premiered a new Rihanna-starring film called Guava Island. And now, he’s capping it all off by officially launching a new line of Adidas sneakers called Donald Glover Presents. More »
Before it became Childish Gambino material and an Arcade Fire music video, Black Orpheus was a pretty good movie. The 1959 Brazilian drama was a re-interpretation of the Greek tragedy imbued with enough imagination to not simply be a blacker Orpheus. Marcel Camus’ version retains the mythical elements, but the film excels in … More »
Childish Gambino and Rihanna‘s new movie, Guava Island, has arrived via Amazon Prime. During Coachella, the flick premiered at a Guava Island-themed set and played across all three stages. It also played on Coachella’s YouTube live stream Saturday night.
The film is directed by Hiro Murai, who directed the Grammy Award-winning “This Is America” music video along with numerous episodes of Atlanta, further building anticipation for the star-studded love affair. Rihanna plays a character named Kofi who falls in love with a singer, Deni, portrayed by Donald Glover (Chilidsh Gambino) himself. Deni begins to gain fame, dealing with the business woes and politics of throwing a festival. During the film, Glover’s character even perform’s Childish Gambino’s “This is America” and “Feels Like Summer.” He also sings a new song called “Red’s Cargo.”
Billed as “A Childish Gambino Film,” the film’s distribution method and release teasers through Amazon Prime are certainly derived from the creative mind of the renaissance artist.
