Denver activists accrue thousands of signatures for decriminalization of magic mushrooms

Denver activists accrue thousands of signatures for decriminalization of magic mushroomsMushrooms

In efforts to shield Denver residents from some of the harshest penalties on the drug class hierarchy, a local activist group amassed upwards of 9,000 signatures to decriminalize the use of psychedelic (psilocybin) mushrooms.

The advocates of Decriminalize Denver must now wait for the elections division to ensure at least 4,726 of the proposed signatures came from registered voters in order for the effort to materialize on the ballot–which is no small order considering Denver’s rejection history with similar initiatives. They have a 25-day window to do so. If the legislation passed, Denver would become the first city in US history to bump magic mushrooms down to the lowest law enforcement priority, and in turn outlaw the use of the city’s resources to pursue individuals caught with the psychedelic substance. However, magic mushrooms would remain illegal in Denver by all counts.

Decriminalize Denver bolsters their efforts with the considerable research pointing to the mental health benefits of psilocybin, which include alleviating opiod dependence, anxiety, and depression. Federal law presently classifies psilocybin in the highest schedule of illicit drugs, right alongside heroin and GHB.

Denver set a bold precedent in 2012 with its efforts to decriminalize marijuana well before statewide legalization. The city is clearly not wiping its hands of its efforts to weather the war on drugs.

Denver’s Beta Nightclub to close in 2019Screen Shot 2018 12 21 At 11.21.32 AM

Beloved clubbing institution Beta Nightclub will soon close its doors. Heralded as one of the preeminent sites in the country for bass, the iconic Denver venue will host its final event on January 5, 2019.

Beta management did not cite a specific reason for the nightclub’s imminent closure in their official statement, published on Facebook. “It is with that reflection that we acknowledge the need to take this time to reset, recalibrate, and re-familiarize ourselves with our promise. Our reputation reflects our integrity and we want to remain true to what we stood for,” the owners wrote.

As it prepares to shutter, Beta joins the long list of dance music venues that have announced their closure in 2018, including The MID in Chicago, The Electric Pickle in Miami, Cielo Nightclub in New York, and most recently, Brooklyn’s Output Nightclub. Hopefully, others will rise to fill the void.

Superfly Presents — the organizers behind festival titans Bonnaroo and Outside Lands — have been working for over a year with the City of Denver to bring a brand new super festival to Colorado. Last August, Denver’s city council voted 10-3 approving the festival for 2018.

In a recent press conference, Superfly has now announced Denver’s newest festival will officially take place on September 14-16, 2018, and the name has been revealed as Grandoozy Music Festival. The best news, however, is that the monstrous line-up announce is only a few weeks away with a reveal slated for March 20th.

The three-day festival will bring 30,000-60,000 attendees to Overland Golf Course, located just south of downtown Denver, and is projected to generate $2 million in ticket sales. Attendance is expected to double in the festival’s second year.

The festival will not host a camping site, but will include culinary, art, beer and outdoor experiences in addition to it’s multi-genre music experience.

The city’s approval granted Superfly a five-year contract at the golf course. If all goes well in its first year, the mainstream festival experience will be something Coloradans can look forward to every September.
