When this decade began, MP3s still reigned supreme. Now, at the end of it, a song is no longer even a file — it’s ephemera, on every streaming service and available to hear in myriad ways. For better and worse, the song (and the single) have become the norm for the general public’s music consumption. More »
Marked priority, sent from somewhere between Serbia and France, electro producer SebastiAn delivers his third single in just as many months, which he dubs “Beograd.”
“I wrote the track while I was in Belgrade for a few days. I was inspired by the idea of making a festive clubbing track, somehow empowered by the Slavic intensity,” divulged the Serbian-French musician on the release.
“Beograd” doesn’t pull any punches, and shows its hand early. The topline and vocal harmonies conjure a distinct Eastern European rave influence, while the percussion and finger-flickin’ bassline root the track in the widely beloved French house sound. It may be straightforward, even slightly formulaic, but the consonance found between the two motifs is an invariably difficult sound to ignore.
Although SebastiAn’s original material has been far and few between since his debut LP of 2011, the Ed Banger staple has kept busy, producing tracks for Frank Ocean, Fall Out Boy and Charlotte Gainsbourg, while still attributing the infrequent remix to his own catalog. SebastiAn returns to form October 25, however, as he is set to release his sophomore LP, Thirst.
Coffee with Charlotte Gainsbourg seems like it should take place in black and white. There’s something distinctly classical about the 47-year-old, almost as if she walked out of the frame of an old film and into the streets of contemporary New York. But when we meet a few blocks from her apartment in the West … More »
French musician and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg released a fantastic album called Rest at the tail-end of 2017. It was her first album in seven years, a dark and brooding collection of synth-driven pop songs sung in both French and English. I named single “Deadly Valentine” one of my favorites of the year, and … More »
French singer-songwriter and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg has announced an EP called Take 2, which she’ll drop next week. It follows her acclaimed 2017 album Rest, which ended a seven-year hiatus. The new EP will include two live tracks, including her whispery cover of Kanye West’s “Runaway,” plus a version of Rest … More »
At the beginning of this month, I saw Charlotte Gainsbourg play at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival. The whole thing was so perfect that it felt like a gig dreamt up for a movie: a group of shadowy figures taking the stage around one in the morning, backlit by neon-esque lights, making their way through … More »
“Welcome to the best festival in the world,” Adam Granduciel said shortly into the War On Drugs’ set at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound. It was Thursday night, the first full day of the fest, and Granduciel provided a proper introduction to the weekend ahead. With the Drugs having grown into one of the most reliably transporting … More »
Everything A-Trak touches turns to gold. There’s nothing even remotely fake coming from the Fool’s Gold label boss’ wheelhouse. Now, he’s continuing to excavate treasures — having already unearthed supreme dance remixes for artists like Kanye West, Miike Snow, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more, A-Trak’s latest haul is a balmy disco rendition of Charlotte Gainsbourg’s perennially cool “Sylvia Says.”
Gainsbourg recently released a limited edition, 12” EP with remixes from Soulwax, SebastiAn, and Les Oxalis for Record Store Day. A-Trak’s take on “Sylvia Says” comes as a part of a forthcoming six-track remix EP out June 1 which will feature new takes on the track from Tensnake, Breakbot, Jerge, Mind Enterprise, and Radio Slave.
The lineup of Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival is always stacked. It’s one of the best-booked festivals in the world, always boasting an impressive and diverse array of headliners atop a sprawling lineup that can hold all sorts of surprises. Conflicts are, counter-intuitively, less of a topic with Primavera because at a certain point you have … More »
French electro house stalwart Sebastian Akchoté-Bozovic — better known simply as SebastiAn — never seems to take his foot off the gas. The Ed Banger icon’s discography has gravitated towards cult acclaim over the last decade and, while his prominence isn’t quite as forthright as French colleagues Justice or Busy P, his releases are always a welcome dive into authentic French house.
Now, Bozovic is here to quench our French thirst once again with his latest release of Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s seminal track “A-Ring O’Roses.” Toned down, stripped to minimalism, and subsequently re-adorned with the dressings of French synths that veer towards heady futurism, the remix is a melodic build culminating in a melancholic tug.
