A new addition to Saudi Arabia’s live event circuit, the inaugural MDL Beast Festival will be held from December 19 – 21 in Riyadh. The region’s largest music and culture festival, MDL Beast has curated a global selection of dance acts for its introductory event.

Headliners of the diverse, genre-fluid lineup include Afrojack, Black Coffee, David Guetta, FISHER, J. Balvin, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, and Sebastian Ingrosso, among others. Saudi artists such as the country’s first female DJ, Cosmicat, and production duo, Dish Dash, also top the MDL Beast ticket, exemplifying organizers’ commitment to programming that strikes a balance between local talent and international electronic heavyweights. Cosmicat and Dish Dash will be joined by 22 other regional talents.

In a statement, Steve Aoki expressed his excitement, “This summer I got to play in Saudi Arabia for the very first time; it was the most incredible experience that I’ll never forget. When I got the offer to play at the three-day MDL Beast Festival, I was thrilled to become part of it and be back in the region again. 

In addition to singular live sets, MDL Beast will also host a series of noteworthy back-to-back performances. Martin Garrix will take the decks alongside Tiësto, CamelPhat will share the stage with FISHER. However, these are just two of the illustrious joint appearances that will unfold at MDL Beast. 

“I’m so proud of the fact that we’re hosting this festival in Saudi; it’s a great reflection of the Saudi audience being able to experience the music they love, both local and international, right here in Riyadh.

As one of the first female EDM DJs here, I’m excited to be flying the flag and representing women on the scene. I can’t wait to share the stage with some phenomenal global talent and play for the MDL Beast crowd. This is going to be the set of my lifetime,” says Cosmicat.

The multi-sensory, multi-stage festival will pay homage to Saudi Arabia in its Saudi influenced stage design and production, which will be tailored to reflect the architecture of the region. Black Coffee throws scerene drums and melody at 2000’s R&B chart dominator Usher, in an infectious new after hours groove titled, “LaLaLa,” landing on Ultra Records. This is the first single from the South African producer since his 2018 track “Wish You Were Here,” and similarly Usher’s first offering of 2019.

“La La La,” carried by plucks and twirling air, is guided nicely towards a familiar, soothing pop-inspired backdrop. Then, joined with a vibrant afrobeat appeal, the track comes together to make for a sensual dance between voice and rhythm. Swinging percussion elements accent the track’s crooning vocals as the chemistry seems effortless between Usher and Coffee.

Usher’s last effort came last year on a joint album alongside Zaytoven, A. In that time, Black Coffee collaborated with David Guetta, Drake, and Alicia Keys, as he continued cementing his undoubtable legacy as one of Red Bull Music Academy‘s proudest exports.

Whether listeners will be basking in the Miami sun, or alternatively watching Miami Music Week and Ultra Music Festival unfold from a distance, Ultra Records ensures that electronic aficionados won’t need to shuffle incessantly to find the songs sure to keep the energy going, from dusk to dawn. Cue—or rather, queue—Ultra Records’ ULTRA Music Festival 2019, a diverse collection of 16 cuts from a selection of top-billed artists, all of which will take the decks at the festival’s 21st iteration, from March 29-31.

With appearances from ZHU, Black Coffee, Louis The Child, SNBRN, Flosstradamus, Hot Since 82, and a wealth of other respected acts, the compilation encompasses the range of genre and sound evident represented on this year’s lineup. Dog Blood continues their resurging string of festival announcements, topping Ultra’s second wave of talent. Black Coffee, Sven Väth, and Cirez D performing back-to-back with Adam Beyer rounds out the latest addition of festival headliners. Other newcomers to the lineup include 3LAU, CamelPhat, Elephante, Salvatore Ganacci, Nicky Romero, Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello performing live, and more. Ultra Music Festival (UMF) has proven its RESISTANCE brand to be a well-oiled industrial machine that unceasingly manufactures some of the finest house and techno lineups in the modern festival circuit. The revelations of its 2019 lineup continues this process. For its 2019 edition, Ultra Miami will present the RESISTANCE concept in an unprecedented manner, devoting a considerable portion of the Virginia Key festival grounds to what UMF organizers have newly dubbed “RESISTANCE island.”

Given the artists who grace Ultra Miami’s 2019 RESISTANCE lineup, “island” is indeed an apt descriptor. UMF crafts an underground paradise of electronic sorts via live sets from Maceo Plex, Black Coffee, Sasha | John Digweed, Richie Hawtin, and Charlotte de Witte. Adam Beyer and Cirez D will link up for another installment in their mythical back-to-back format series. Eric Prydz, however, won’t be the only producer appearing under an alias–deadmau5 notably figures among the RESISTANCE lineup as Testpilot. deadmau5′ Testpilot set flanks his headlining set as deadmau5. The mau5trap label head’s headlining set that will be the platform of deadmau5’s worldwide debut of his Cube 3.0.

In the midst of RESISTANCE’s luster gleams a back-to-back Carl Cox set. Ultra maintains the mystery for now, as festival organizers currently conceal of the name of Cox’s back-to-back partner behind the decks, which Ultra will expectedly declare at a later date. Ultra Music Festival will record its inaugural edition at its new home of Virginia Key from March 29-31.

Lane 8 has squared away 2018 with the release of his winter mixtape. He’s gracefully arranged four lengthy mixes over the course of 2018 that uniquely embody the not just the nature of their respective seasons, but the transformative essence of those seasons changing.

Through his fall 2018 mixtape, Lane 8 sonically thread warm and bright vibrations together with the moods evoked of changing colors and longer nights. His summer mix set the scene for waves crashing on beaches and warm breezes. The spring mixtape took listeners into this year with grace, through a soundscape that pollen could dance on. With each mix Lane 8 has accomplished the personal, trying, and unique feat of giving a portion of time — and the change that happens during that time — a sonic stamp.

The winter 2018 mixtape is no exception. Through four hours of fluid mixing and careful, hand-picked arrangement, Lane 8 has given this winter his stamp. Starting in with his own remix of Virtual Self‘s “Ghost Voices,” Lane 8 starts guiding his listeners into the mix, gliding over the icy inhibitions and harsh winds of the season. By an hour and a half into the mix, he hits listeners with the Yotto edit of Fatima Yamaha’s haunting “What’s a Girl to Do.” Through the acts of Jon Hopkins, Rampa, Eelke Kleijn, Black Coffee, Dirty South, the crews of Anjunadeep, All Day I Dream, and many more, Lane 8 finds an enjoyable, quintessential feeling that unifies the chill of winter with the warmth within people who not only withstand the cold it but love it.

Lane 8 has been putting these seasonal mixes for a few years now, and with each passing year, they’ve become more refined and more needed, bringing out the best of each season. This winter mix evokes visions of fur rugs, fireplaces, and snow falling softly outside wooden-frame windows — cozy spots where one would hope to be posted for a quick four hours in the upcoming months. With this growth in the lineup, the festival has also announced that the music will now take place across two stages, with art and light installations lining the jungle path between. There often comes a time in great artists’ careers when they have acquired a certain level of devoutness from fans that allows them to truly feel free from the confines of an appealing facade or obligation to appease. Three decades into his into his artistic journey, David Guetta surpassed that milestone many musical epochs ago. Yet, with his Big Beat-housed, double-sided 7 album, Guetta endeavors to show the world there is uncharted sonic terrain worthy of the trek.

The two-disc album is certainly indicative of the different hats Guetta has worn over the years, most broadly as a ubiquitous dance-pop deity and more recently, the reveal of less radio-ready stylings from his alter-ego, Jack Back. Disc-one is Guetta as the world knows him — in all his prophesied pop eminence. Riddled with weighty collaboration, the first side of the venerated French powerhouse’s new studio work features a slew of larger-than-life joint efforts, including his previously released, immaculately sung “Flames” with Sia, a reunion preceded by their sublimely successful 2011 smash, “Titanium.” Guetta seems to cover all his streamability bases in this first portion, enlisting equally exalted dance pop sharks like Justin Bieber, Nicki MinajMartin Garrix on “Like I Do” and the Steve Aoki-assisted “Motto.” Guetta casts a wide net of appeal, following commercial counterparts like Major Lazer in sprinkling in some ever-so-timely Afro-pop, bolstered by the South African Black Coffee, on “Drive.”

Guetta’s recently unraveled side-project, Jack Back, drives home disc-two, which is comprised of groove-heavy, largely atmospheric tech-house. With winding, instrumental tracks like “Overtone” and “Afterglow,” it stands as an ambivalence-inducing paradox. On one hand, it represents the mainstream dance circuit’s acceptance of a more avant-garde product, of the scene’s most prominent figures’ willingness to deliver a raw, less-calculated extension of themselves. On the other — succeeding fellow icons like Calvin Harris, who recently announced he’d be receding back to his club-adept roots — this return to form can easily be construed as an overdue attempt to delineate oneself from the improbably saturated, monotonous sea of over-compressed bass drops. Tech-house, following progressive, future bass, and future house, takes its place among one of the most recent sub-genre crazes. The resurgence has been actualized by the likes of longtime devotees like Claude VonStroke, Carl Cox, and Green Velvet, who have been championing the jazzy, instrumental sound for decades. David Guetta plants his flag on side two. He’s earned the status to return to a less commercially viable aesthetic. What’s more, fans deserve something potentially more stimulating from such high-held superstars. Our palates are savvier than they were in 2010, and radio-ready blockbusters can only take an artist so far, and Guetta uses the back half of the gatefold to address that shift.

Yes, two years in the making, is Guetta’s seventh studio album. But the French DJ/producer wears the number as a badge of continuity.

7 is a magical number and represents a full cycle to me. When you’re just starting out as an artist you go step by step and it’s only positive energy; passion, love, challenges,” says Guetta. “…This is why ‘7’ is a perfect name to me, because I feel like I’m going back to my original energy which can be heard in this album.”

Existential turmoil aside, whether Guetta has been biding his time to showcase this doubtlessly more nuanced side of his artistic repertoire or he simply seized a timely opportunity to reinvent himself, performs as a spacious snapshot of contemporary dance music.
