Travis Scott, Big Boi to perform alongside Maroon 5 at 2019 Super BowlTravis Scott Live 2

It’s official: Travis Scott will be in “Super Bowl” Mode for Super Bowl LIII. After flirting with the possibility of a Travis Scott guest performance for several months, Super Bowl halftime show organizers have now confirmed that the Astroworld album-maker will appear alongside previously announced halftime headliner, Maroon 5. Fellow rapper Big Boi is also slated to join Scott and Maroon 5.

Scott’s Super Bowl booking comes after philanthropic collaboration between Scott and the NFL, who will collectively donate $500,000 to “social justice accelerator,” Dream Corps. “I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in,” Scott said in a statement that followed formal announcement of his entertainment confirmation. “I know being an artist that it’s in my power to inspire. So before confirming the Super Bowl Halftime performance, I made sure to partner with the NFL on this important donation. I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change,” Scott added.

A source close to the “Sicko Mode” artist told Billboard that Scott’s participation in the halftime show was contingent upon the NFL’s agreement to contribute a donation to Dream Corps. Many artists rejected the NFL’s Super Bowl 2019 halftime show bids, including Rihanna, Jay-Z, Adele, and Cardi B, each of whom reportedly rejected the entertainment offer to show solidarity to prior San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the National Anthem in “protest against police brutality” in 2016. Storied and dedicated in his efforts to to bring attention to the issue of police brutality in the nation for many years preluding Kaepernick’s on-field opposition, JAY-Z supposedly attempted to dissuade Scott from accepting a halftime slot at Super Bowl 2019 prior to Scott’s confirmation.

Big Boi is bringing back all the nostalgic memories of OutKast. The Savannah, Georgia native is the latest to take on NPR for their Tiny Desk Concert series. The room was immediately filled with good vibes, live instruments, and the soulful R&B and hip-hop vibes from the ’90s.

“The energy in the room was buoyant and vibrant from the moment they walked in the door,” reads a statement from NPR. “OutKast star Big Boi, Sleepy Brown of the prolific Atlanta production collective Organized Noize, and their eight-member backing band have been working together for 20-plus years, and their chemistry is instantaneous and undeniable.”

Watch below as they perform “So Fresh, So Clean,” “All Night” from his solo album, Boomiverse, and “The Way You Move.”

In anticipation of his forthcoming solo album, The Atlas Underground, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, has aligned himself with hip-hop associates Big Boi and Killer Mike, as well as ubiquitous bass producer, Bassnectar, for “Rabbit’s Revenge.” The track takes a staunch look at an incredibly volatile topic as of late, addressing police brutality in its messaging.

The track assumes an aggressive stance toward the issue, with fierce, thrashing guitar chords, and assertive lyrics to match, which allude to some of the most prominent and hotly-debated subjects of police brutality in the last decade: “Fight for my life like I’m mother****ing Mike Brown / cause I refuse to be the next ni**a shot down.” The official video for the track, released through Apple Music, commemorates more of the most pronounced subjects of recent police brutality cases, including Bernard Bailey and Neville Johnson Jr.

“Rabbit’s Revenge” and its crew of individually outspoken creators follow a towering list of artists throughout history who have used their platform and following to take stances on the ruling issues of the day, from The Beatles‘ “Revolution” to Beyonce‘s 2013 Super Bowl performance—the latter also a blast to the police force. “Rabbit’s Revenge” is not Morello’s first police force critique, either. In 1992, Rage Against The Machine released the hotly-contended “Killing In The Name” following the LAPD’s beating of Rodney King the previous year. The track was crafted in response to the officers’ subsequent and controversial acquittal of all charges.
