Kali Uchis delivers her sultry cover of Kayne West’s ‘Paranoid’ on BBC Radio 1Kali Uchis

There is much more than what meets the eye with singer/songwriter beauty Kali Uchis. She is a genre-bending multi-threat that sings, writes her own music, along with producing, directing, and credentials as a spirited saxophone and piano player. She recently stopped into Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, and gave the low on what’s up in the world of one of the brightest new songwriting forces out there. She performed three sultry selects, “Just A Stranger,” “After The Storm,” and a cover of 808s and Heartbreak standout “Paranoid” by Kanye West in exquisite fashion.

When asked about why she choose a Kanye song she explained that, “808s & Heartbreak was inspirational” in her formative years, continuing, “he was trying to do something different with his voice, and the heart in it…is really special.” While many people might be intimidated to cover such an intricate Kanye product, Uchis slays it in her signature sound and characteristically soulful touch. Check out Kali Uchis’ whole BBC Radio 1 performance below and catch the Kayne cover at around 18 minutes in.

Good Morning Mix: Turn on the lights with Hammer’s Lights On Mix

This post was originally published on this site

BBC Radio 1‘s Monki is the underground tastemaker to trust.

Between a healthy upbringing on Ibiza tunes from her mother, a gifting of hip-hop and garage tapes throughout her childhood from her uncle, and a hefty serving of dub and grime from her London hometown, it’s safe to say she knows her way behind the decks.

Monki serves as a resident on Annie Mac’s touring club night “AMP” and set up her digital label Zoo Music in 2012. In turn, one can be sure Monki’s late night BBC show never disappoints.

Her “Lights On Mix,” airing every Sunday night through Monday morning, is a soundtrack for the moment the club is closing, but no one wants to go home. In essence, Monki presents the afterparty playlist and often welcomes artists to cultivate a culmination of classic and new downtempo numbers that hold their own after a long night on the dancefloor.

Perfectly encapsulating the essence of Monki’s “Lights On Mix” is Belfast and Glasgow-based Hammer. Named one of Monki’s  “Ones To Watch,” Hammer, real name Rory Hamilton, brings this home in his near 30-minute mix. Hammer helps listeners get ready to turn on the bright lights, encapsulating the aura of a 4 am warehouse winding down.

Margot – My Sisters
System 7 & A Guy Called Gerald – Positive Noise (Carl Craig Remix)
Deetron – Endless
Château Flight – Cosmic Race
Tony Allen – Kilode (Carl Craig Remix – Detroit Swindle Re-Edit)
Hammer – Manaka

Hugo Massien releases ‘Ghost Note’ EP

This post was originally published on this site

Hugo Massien has released his Ghost Note EP. The project features four tracks and spans atmospheric house, UK breaks, and experimental techno.

Massien’s tracks have garnered the support of DJs Annie MacBicep, and Maya Jane Coles, to name a few. After coming into contact with Dusky via last year’s acclaimed “Restart the Sun,” the UK-based producer now officially charters his newest release on Dusky’s label, 17 Steps.

“Ghost Note” is an homage to UK breaks paired with a lethal injection of futuristic acid house synths, and the stylistic fusion evokes an ominous sense of distress in robotic fashion. “Speak to Silence” develops similar robo-frequencies, in a more linear fashion. Echoing synths are juxtaposed with their more direct, computational counterparts; drops of acid hit the stove, each creating its own boisterous ting. “Broke the Cycle” is a moody, grooving dance ballad reminiscent of rave’s yesteryears while the concluding track, “Meisser 77,” signals the finish of the EP with Detroit influenced synths and prodding drums.

To coincide with the EP, Hugo will be joining Dusky on the Nottingham and Brussels dates of their 17 Steps tour in 2018.

The follow-up LP to The xx‘s 2012 sophomore album, Coexist, has been a long time coming. For over a year now, the group has enticed fans with blances into their studio sessions and revelations of an upcoming world tour — the band’s first in two years — which kicks off at the end of November. Bringing the anticipation of the group’s third album to new heights, within the past few weeks, The xx has shared mysterious minute-long sound snippets and announced an upcoming performance and interview with Annie Mac at BBC Radio 1‘s Maida Vale studios this Thursday, November 10.

Adding to the frenzy, a Reddit user has just discovered what may be the new The xx album, entitled I See You, on Shazam. The peculiar album includes 12 new track titles, one of which — entitled “Performance” — the group is said to have debuted during a show in 2014. With the album’s potential title and track names now uncovered, one would assume it can’t be much longer until the British band finally drops their long-awaited LP.
