“Hey young people – you’re getting older every second. It’s what we do. One day someone will tell you to stop and you’ll be all like ‘fuck you’ just like Madonna.” That was former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes on Twitter the night of the Billboard Music Awards. Tucked near the end of Maren Morris’ new album GIRL is a lovely little tune called “The Bones.” Like many Morris songs, it’s not about the art of songwriting but could just as easily be an allegory for her expertise in that area. In “The Bones,” a busted old house that has weathered the elements … More »
Do you remember what you were doing the night of December 31, 2016? Just after midnight, I was at home watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest, still smarting from Ohio State’s brutal loss to Clemson in the College Football Playoff, when onto my screen bounded Mariah Carey, apropos of nothing. Young Thug‘s released the highly anticipated On the Rvn EP.
Despite its fair share of setbacks and Thugger’s arrest earlier this year, the rapper’s managed to nab a who’s-who of artists for the work, creating an experimental roster that spans generations and genres while putting diehard fans at ease.
This is Thugger for the radio. With features from 6LACK and Jaden Smith and even a starry-eyed Elton John appearance on the project’s final track “High” — Thugger’s own homage to John’s seminal Honky Château hit “Rocket Man — the EP’s Thugger’s most left-of-field pop star self-positioning to date.

The rapper’s somewhere out in the stratosphere on “High,” channeling a level of brevity and experimentation that feels grounded solely in its nonexistence, and it’s a theme that runs the entire work.
If you’re wondering where Young Thug gets off giving his new EP basically the same name as Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s co-headlining tour: Bey and Jay may have made a fortune playacting the fugitive lifestyle, but Young Thug has been out here actually on the run in recent months. More »
