Two founding members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, have announced that they will team up as a duo for the first time ever in 2018. Relix had the announced dates/info after Weir announced on SiriusXM’s Tales From the Golden Road, and a site is now up called BobbyAndPhil.com that details out what shows they’re playing. The tour will kick off in New York City at Radio City Music Hall before heading to Boston’s Wang Theatre and the Chicago Theatre. I’m guessing these won’t be the last that are announced, but here’s what the Dead Duo has confirmed.

Bob Weir & Phil Lesh Tour Dates

March 2 New York, NY – Radio City Music Hall
March 3 New York, NY – Radio City Music Hall
March 7 Boston, MA – Wang Theatre
March 8 Boston, MA – Wang Theatre
March 10 Chicago, IL – Chicago Theatre
March 11 Chicago, IL – Chicago Theatre

Warren Haynes hosted his annual Xmas Jam last night and welcomed out Trey Anastasio for “Miss You” and “Midnight Rider”. As a bonus immediately following, Holly Bowling came out and her and Warren did “Morning Dew”.

Apple is reportedly in talks to buy perhaps my favorite music app ever created, Shazam, for close to $400 million.

Sources tell us that the company is close to acquiring Shazam, the popular app that lets people identify any song, TV show, film or advert in seconds, by listening to an audio clip or (in the case of, say, an ad) a visual fragment, and then takes you to content relevant to that search.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood rolled through the Sin City last night to play at the Brooklyn Bowl on the Strip, and our friend Paul Citone was there to get photos from the show. As he told me and as fans saw on the webcast, this was the band playing at a level that was the best they had ever seen.

YouTube is reportedly looking to launch a streaming music service, currently codenamed Remix. Word is that it’s potentially set to launch in March and will reportedly bring together on-demand paid audio service with video clips… they’re just waiting on all the contracts to be finalized.

Google Play Music staff were folded into the YouTube team earlier this year,” says Music Business Worldwide.

WORDS BY HEATH CLAYTON

Lineup: “Everyone Loves Terrapin”
Matt Butler of Everyone Orchestra
Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead
Al Schnier and Vinnie Amico of moe.
Grahame Lesh and Ross James of The Terrapin Family Band
Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman of TAB
w/ special guest Holly Bowling

This past weekend, Matt Butler brought his Everyone Orchestra to Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael California. Matt’s intense style of improv and choice of band members, is always special… But, these two nights at TRX were above and beyond, with the likes of Al Schnier and Grahame Lesh mixing it up with amazing solos. Phil Lesh, Vinnie Amico, and Ross James holding down a solid rhythm section. Holy Bowling was so impressive with her skills on keys, (see her later this week at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam), and Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie “Chainsaw” Cressman, just belted it out on trumpet, trombone, and vocals.

Night one had Matt getting the band members to really link up and get the foundation of their grooves. His mad hatter/ Zappa-esque style of conducting with the dry erase board and hand gestures kept each member right on track. A lot of vocals were swapped along with first set solos from Schnier and Bowling. Phil and Vinnie kept a solid tempo in the first set, during tunes grooves like “Grateful 4 Ya”, (see attached YouTube link), but Lesh didn’t return for the second set… his replacement was Connor O’Sullivan, of Midnight North. Conner stepped right in for the second set and meshed with James and Amico, perfectly. The second set was also very fluid, with the members seeming more comfortable with trading solos with each other. An amazing drum solo by Vinnie along with vocal and guitar work by Al, rounded out the set. By the end of the night Matt had the audience jumping and wanting more… We were all Grateful that night two was right around the corner.

The second night of EO had Matt, (dressed in a white velvet jacket with tails and top hat to match), pushing all the members to their limits. A lot of the first set was led by bassist Phil Lesh and had a bouncy yet driving feel throughout the set. Amazing vocals from Jennifer and Natalie, along with a crying guitar solo from Al Schnier took us to the end of the first set. Phil joined the band for one last song in the second set, and was replaced, again, by O’Sullivan.

All in all, the energy from these two nights, in a small intimate venue, was very special to the fans. And you could tell the members of this Everyone Orchestra knew that being a part of what was titled, “Everyone Loves Terrapin” was a special run of shows. A big thanks to Matt and all of the members of EO for such great improv and energy!

The Music of Led Zeppelin tribute concert will take place on March 7th at Carnegie Hall. Produced by Michael Dorf, this annual event benefits music education for underprivileged youth. The initial line-up features a house band led by Tony Shanahan of the Patti Smith Band and including Sarah Tomek (Steven Tyler), with performances by Bettye LaVette, The Zombies, Living Colour, The London Souls, J Mascis, Orianthi and Richie Sambora, O.A.R., Erika Wennerstrom of Heartless Bastards and Brian Wheat of Tesla. A full line-up will be announced soon.

General admission tickets are available now. VIP packages offered to previous ticket holders have nearly sold out prior to any of this year’s performers being announced – a testament to this landmark event as well as Led Zeppelin’s legendary music. More information and tickets are available here: http://www.musicof.org/

The Music of Led Zeppelin event will be Dorf’s 15th annual tribute concert held at Carnegie Hall, with 100% of the net proceeds given to music education organizations for underprivileged youth. Over $1.4 million has been raised by the series to date for Young Audiences New York, Little Kids Rock, Church Street School of Music and GRAMMY in the Schools, among others.

Dorf’s must-see sold-out Carnegie shows have previously honored the music of Aretha Franklin, Bill Withers, David Byrne, Paul Simon, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, R.E.M., Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and others. The David Bowie celebration, by an unfortunate coincidence, transformed into a memorial as “wide-ranging and celebrated as Bowie’s career” (The Guardian), which led to the addition of another performance at Radio City Music Hall after the initial show sold out immediately. 2015’s David Byrne and Talking Heads’ celebration was “so explosive that absolutely no one wanted to leave” (Billboard) and Byrne himself closed the show, leading the marching band Brooklyn United down the aisles of Carnegie Hall onto the historic stage.
