Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA managing editor Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic—to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery—DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.


When I started using SoundCloud in early 2014, I made playlists weekly (read: obsessively). I’ve backed off a bit in recent years, but I still take time to collect songs for my yearly “best of” playlist, which I create every January and add to throughout the year. In late December for the past five years, I’ve narrowed it down to my 50 favorite releases of the year. They range from hard-hitting anthems to serene soundscapes, which truly sums up my music preferences.

In 2019, I was fortunate enough to premiere a few of my absolute favorite tracks of the year, including The Midnight‘s remix of SYML‘s “Clean Eyes,” Com Truise‘s remix of Gold Fields‘ “Waterfall,” and Essenger‘s “After Dark.” (A big thank you to all the artists who choose DA as their platform to reveal new music—we love you!)

2019 was a stellar year for drum ‘n’ bass, exhibited in tracks like Kove‘s “Le Retour,” Koven‘s “Love Wins Again,” 1991‘s “Guiding Light,” Metrik‘s “Hackers,” and so many more. The genre took some fun twists and turns, which fans heard in Mat Zo‘s Latin-infused “Games” and Sub Focus‘ earth-shattering remix of Bring Me The Horizon‘s “Mother Tongue.”

This year saw the arrival of a slew of monstrous collaborations—some unexpected and some that simply made sense. Regardless, tracks like Sullivan King and Grabbitz‘s “Crazy As You” and Delta Heavy and Zeds Dead‘s “Lift You Up” blew my mind. I was delighted when Fox Stevenson and Feint teamed up on a remix of the former’s “Out My Head,” since it flawlessly combined both their styles.

Speaking of Fox Stevenson, the UK producer released his highly anticipated album, killjoy, this year, and it’s a dynamic journey through all sides of the producer’s capabilities. Goldroom wowed me with his double-sided, multi-faceted Plunge/Surface effort, which has quite a story behind it. I had a hard time picking a favorite from A R I Z O N A‘s nostalgic Asylum LP, which is gorgeous and heart-wrenching from start to finish. I also need to mention what was likely my most-listened-to album of the year, which isn’t on SoundCloud: Ollie Wride’s Thanks in Advance. It’s gold. I lived in the aforementioned albums this year, and I’m so grateful to the artists who made them for sharing their creativity with the world.

One week ago, Madnap and Yetep revealed an absolutely show-stopping collaboration with Miranda Glory. “It’s Just You” is an emotive journey through Glory’s shimmering vocals, interspersed with dramatic breakdowns and heavy synthwork. The powerful instrumentals were what first hooked me on this tune, but as I’ve listened to it over and over again, I’ve come to truly appreciate the harmonious contrast of Glory’s soothing vocals and the forceful production.

Kramder continues to thrill with a steady stream of infectious house releases. For his latest, he’s taken to Uprise Music for some disco-infused production. “No Time To Be” is a steady-rocking funk tune that uses choppy vocals and a grooving beat to lure the listener in. In his latest release, the French producer has developed a fun, retro edge to his style, helping pave the way for the reemergence of disco elements in today’s house music.

For her new remix package, MARINA has tapped celebrated producer Claptone for a sultry house spin. This dark and moody rendition of “Orange Trees” deviates from the summery atmosphere of the original, which MARINA created to pay homage to the island she grew up on in Greece. Claptone dives to the depths of the nearby ocean on his remake, creating an almost somber backdrop with a deep bassline and shadowy synth melodies.

After six years, Camo & Krooked have made their return to Hospital Records with “Loa.” According to UKF, this new single was “inspired by Haitian voodoo rituals” and Haitian instruments, making for a drum ‘n’ bass song that’s in a league of its own. The introduction is complex and compelling, leaving the listener wondering what’s in store and what the drop will be like. With a unique and addictive drop, fans will find themselves racing through the jungle as the duo paints a vivid sonic picture with their impeccable production.

Dancing Astronaut‘s Breakout Artist of 2018 continues to inspire us with an impressive showing so far in 2019. He follows up his debut LP, Irene, and February’s “Mr. Skitters” with a gorgeous remix of Local Natives’ “When Am I Gonna Lose You.” Medasin’s dreamy style fits in perfectly with the nostalgic feel of Local Natives’ music. Medasin’s subtle trap beat paired with falsetto and pensive harmonies are a match made in heaven.

Canadian producer Vincent has released his debut EP, For You, on ICONS Music and distributed by PRMD Music, showcasing the vulnerable side to his previous spectrum of hard trap to emotive future bass. After his successful festival remix of Alison Wonderland’s “U Don’t Know,” Vincent was thrust into the spotlight with popular singles like “Her” and his hit release with QUIX, “Hero,” featuring David Shane.

For You is a five-track project with previous single releases “Breathe 2.0” and “Same Page” with yetep featuring Brooke Daye. These set the tone for the project with lush synths, vocals taking center stage, and melodically rhythmic hooks that shimmer and shine. “Here For You” featuring sad alex uses bouncing synths with a horn melody, while “I’m No Magician” featuring Love, Alexa begins with a more melancholy tone, adjusting itself towards a contrast of distancing vocal chops and uttering low end bass. “Can’t Help Myself” featuring Pauline Herr is the final track of the all-female-vocal EP.  The stripped-down intro slowly builds into a beautiful pop-leaning synthscape that leads into a contrasted second verse with male vocals.

Alongside the EP, Vincent also announced his For You world tour, which marks his first headlining tour.

Each week, New Music Friday sweeps through with torrential force, showering streaming platforms with immeasurable amounts of new tunes. Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes serves as a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.

In his latest, Vincent has teamed up with Yetep and Brooke Daye to deliver the lighthearted “Same Page.” Will Clarke and Nick Monaco concoct some techno madness with their new collaboration, “Like A Girl,” on Dirtybird. In a seven-minute Steyoyoke Recordings venture, Rinzen has created “Forms,” an ethereal techno odyssey. Jai Wolf released two tracks from his forthcoming debut album, The Cure To Loneliness, “Lose My Mind” and “Telepathy.” Those who’ve seen a k?d performance can finally enjoy his show edit of “Find Paradise,” which he released via SoundCloud. KUURO have covered Post Malone‘s “Better Now,” and Sam Void‘s released “Feel The Low” on Protocol Recordings. HERO has revealed a “VHS pop” Fool’s Gold EP, containing disco-influenced tracks like “Nightcrawler.” Rainer + Grimm deliver their rendition of R3HAB‘s “Radio Silence,” and Syn Cole puts his spin on Nina Nesbitt’s “Colder.”
