Flying Lotus has unequivocally been one of the most diverse and prolific producers of the past decade. His range has known no bounds. From the hip-hop interludes between late-night Adult Swimshows, to his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Thom Yorke, to heralding his own label and artistic collective, the Los Angeles-based visionary has consistently pushed the limits. Now, FlyLo is teasing his first new album in five years with the release of his unsettling new single “Fire Is Coming” featuring iconic filmmaker David Lynch. On his latest,it’s clear the artist lesser known as Steve Ellison is pushing once again, and this time, it’s well into the avant-garde.
The video, directed by the You’re Dead! producer and David Firth, lies the same realm of something one might find playing on an old TV in the Museum of Modern Art. In the new visual, David Lynch’s face twists and his eyes burn with fire as he tells a story from the mouth of a wolf in a wheelchair. His story is told to children adorned in fur. The score to this short film is in line with the visuals, it scratches and itches, it evokes an inalienable fear. The fear is that of the end or the impending notion of an apocalypse, which is a theme Flylo hasn’t been shy about in his previous works.
“I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind—a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in the fire,” says Ellison in a press statement.
Mortality and humanity have been themes in his work for many years and despite their subtle nature have drawn realists, dreamers, and optimistic nihilists towards his music and message in droves.

For the past five years, the festival took place at San Antonio Reservoir Recreation Area in Bradley, California; and the last two years were met tragically with the death of a festival attendee at each. Now, the festival has moved to a new venue at Buena Vista Lake in Central California, with lush, green pastures, a shaded tree line, and accessible shoreline that’s sure to bring festival-goers in full force.

Each week, New Music Friday sweeps through with torrential force, showering streaming platforms with immeasurable amounts of new tunes. Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes serves as a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.
Just days after the release of their thrilling mega-collab, Seven Lions, SLANDER, and Dabin have revealed an acoustic version of “First Time.” Nora En Pure brings smooth sonic goodness in her new single, “We Found Love” with Ashibah, and Canada’s Grandtheft turns up the intensity with his latest, “Bags.” Italian duo VINAI are ready to hit main stages in 2019 with their festival heater, “WILD,” with Fatman Scoop. As part of his new The Demented EP, Sullivan King teams up with Grabbitz for a formidable dubstep number, “Show Stopper.” NERVO continue to dominate the space between pop and dance music with their newest single, “Habit,” and The Aston Shuffle and Fabich pump out an extended mix of “Stay.” Dezza floods listeners’ ears with the gorgeous “Toadaso,” and FETISH cooks up an emotive deep house remix of Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina’s iconic “Stereo Love.”
With his Les Sins and Laff Trax side projects, multiple collaborative EPs, and his pattern of releasing an album every year since 2015, Chaz Bundick may be one of the busiest artists out there. Now, the chillwave progenitor has announced Outer Peace, his sixth studio album under the Toro y Moi moniker, and released a new single, “Freelance.”
A more upbeat and engaging track than much of his 1980s inspired 2017 album, Boo Boo, Toro y Moi brings out the autotune on his latest, high-energy offering. “Freelance” includes some funky synth work and choppy vocals warped by his stimulating production. If this first single off of his upcoming 10-track album is any indication of the rest of the project, Toro y Moi fans are in for a captivating end to 2018, with features from Abra, Wet., and Instupendo on the way.
