Dillon Francis never ceases to surprise. The producer announced via social media recently that he has a “ton” of new music coming, and he has kept true to this promise. After releasing “Let it Go” with Eptic to kick off the month of August, Francis has followed up swiftly, heading in an entirely new direction with next release, “Til I Die,” alongside cutting edge R&B duo THEY.

“Til I Die” blends rock tropes with chanting rap vocals that come together to form an unexpected, complementary fusion of the collaborators’ respective sounds. The track certainly boasts mainstream appeal as THEY. lace their punchy vocals around cascading electric guitar riffs. “Til I Die” is out now via Avant Garden/Island Records.

It’s most important day of the week: New Music Friday.

Electronic artists have blessed out eardrums once again with heavy-hitting percussive projects, sultry harmonies, catchy melodies, and crisp vocals. Fatboy Slim‘s festival classic, “Praise You,” receives a funky edit from Purple Disco Machine. Hotel Garuda lends his crafty melody-chop work alongside Imad Royal and Kiah Victoria, while Taska Black continues to show why bitbird is bending boundaries in the future bass space. Midnight Kids and Tritonal do what they do best with uplifting atmospheres and infectious melody drops. Former member of Krewella — Kris “Rain Man” Trindl — caresses Vikki Gilmore’s vocals amongst bouncing guitars and driving harmonies on “Take It Closer.” JayKode and ORIENTAL CRAVINGS go hard on their projects for Flux Pavillion & Doctor P‘s Circus Records imprint and a remix of Alison Wonderland‘s single with SLUMBERJACK, “Sometimes Love,” respectively.

As each week brings a succession of new music from some of electronic music’s biggest artists, here’s a selection of tracks that shouldn’t be missed this NMF.

Each week, New Music Friday sweeps through with torrential force, showering streaming platforms with immeasurable amounts of new tunes. Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes will be a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.

This week’s selection of tunes includes new releases from Nora En Pure to TroyBoi to Morgan Page. Kicking off, Aussie duo Hermitude return for a blissful collaboration with Bibi Bourelly. Nora En Pure launches her Polynesia EP with a gorgeous song of the same name, and fellow beats queen WHIPPED CREAM goes from zero to 60 in “Bad For Me.” In “Facing the Sea,” DROELOE and Sem find themselves and “[acknowledge] that it’s going to be hard and that you’re going to struggle and that you should face those problems head-on.” Protostar and Muzzy hold nothing back on their new Monstercat drum & bass heater, “MELTDOWN.” Darude taps JVMIE for “Timeless,” a powerful trance number on Gareth Emery‘s Garuda.

THEY. dropped the music video for their Wiz Khalifa-assisted single “What I Know Now,” closely followed by a brand new collaboration with Jessie Reyez, “Broken.” The new visual is sure to set the tone for the duo’s highly anticipated upcoming Fireside  EP, set to land on November 9. The impending project will reportedly feature contributions from Jeremih, Gallant, Vic Mensa, and Ty Dolla $ign.

The “What I Know Now” visual, directed by Amber Park, succeeds in bringing an array of concentrated elements from an entire era of music to the here and now. The horizontal grain from the handheld digital camcorders of yesteryear show a dark, grungy, visceral, live set reminiscent of the 90s — the compression effect on the guitar and chains hanging from the stage add to this end. The editing on the video, however, is something digital artists of that time could only dream of.

Sonically, “What I Know Now” remains contemporary. The LA-duo sing catchy hooks through subtle autotune and the presence of Wiz Khalifa’s high energy, status, and experience bring the message of the performance to light — they’re rock stars, they’re high profile, and they’re clearly confident about what they’re about to release.

The pace changes considerably on the EP’s second offering, “Broken” featuring emerging pop force Jessie Reyez. The smooth, heartbreak-inspired collaboration points to a well-rounded collection underway on Fireside, and certainly highlights the complements between Reyez’ infectious vocals and THEY.’s sleek R&B-influenced sound.

THEY. is back with Wiz Khalifa on a new laid-back genre bender, “What I Know Now,” to combine elements of r&b and rock ‘n’ roll. The song reflects the duo’s failed relationship with distorted guitars and alternative music while the Pittsburgh rapper brings his phantasmic flow in the final verse–both parties, indeed, describing what they know.

THEY.’s Dante Jones recently expounded on his ever-changing process in an interview with FADER: “After we dropped our last album, I took a step back and decided that I wanted my writing process to feel more therapeutic, not just for me but for the listener as well,” he said. “The song started off with the guitar riff and it instantly took me back to being a kid listening to alternative music. At that point started thinking about what I would say to myself at that point in life.”

“What I Know” is the first single off THEY.’s upcoming Fireside EP, set to drop November 9 with collaborations from Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, Gallant, Vic Mensa, and Jessie Reyez. THEY. have been relatively quiet in 2018, releasing two singles within the last year: “Pops” and “Thrive.” In 2017, they released a brimming 14-track EP, Nü Religion: HYENA. The EP was released by Mind of a Genius Records, a subsidiary of Warner, through which Fireside will also be released on.

Drew Love from the hip-hop duo THEY. and Emmit Fenn have teamed up for an R&B collaboration, “Without You.” Love and Fenn’s sultry vocals caress low-toned keys submerged underneath high-end percussion elements. Interestingly enough, there’s no kick throughout the track, as the keys do most of the low-end and kick arrangement work. The contrast between the two vocalists are closely related, both portraying emotions of a fading relationship.

Fenn’s emotive production and vocal techniques have recently been featured alongside Vic Mensa, with a music video for his single, “Pouring Rain.”  Billie Eilish’s “bitches broken hearts” also received Fenn’s gentle production touch. “Without You” is part of Fenn’s upcoming hip-hop project, The Grey Area, set to be released in October.

Chromeo‘s DRAM-assisted “Must’ve Been” has been given a stunning overhaul by fast rising R&B duo THEY. The original track has been in rotation since April as an up-beat single from the Funklordz latest LP Head Over Heels, featuring an infectious hook courtesy of the Virginia-born rapper and an ultra-cheeky music video to match. The song previously received remix treatments from artists including CID, Mercer, and Yolanda Be Cool.

Mind of a Genius-championed production outfit THEY. take the original’s chorus and a slinky new verse from singer Drew Love, and lay them over a lush, retro-inspired R&B production from the duo’s producer Dante Jones. The result isn’t just a remix, but a unique reimagining of the original canvas.  Even Chromeo themselves admit THEY.’s take caught them by surprise, and could be even better than the original. The 19th annual edition of Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is officially in the books. After Beyoncé handed over her empowering main stage performance on Saturday night, fans probably wondered if the final day of Coachella could ever be as iconic. Fortunately for all, Coachella is a festival that always seems to top itself. Marquee acts, such as Eminem, Miguel, and Cardi B, gave attendees a second wind in the sweltering Indio desert with their closing day performances, along with burgeoning electronic talents ODESZAIllenium, and San Holo.

Here is DA‘s guide to the key moments of day three at Coachella 2018.

Eminem brings out an all-star cast in Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Skylar Grey, and more 

As Coachella’s closing headliner for an audience of nearly 100,000 people, Eminem knew he had a tough act to follow in Queen B’s landmark two-hour set (which made her the first ever woman of color to headline the festival). Marshall Mathers rounded up an all-star roster to join him on stage — including Dr. Dre50 Cent, Bebe Rexha, Skylar Grey, and Kehlani — to perform some of the biggest career hits.

While Mathers was sure to cover his golden-age hits “The Real Slim Shady” and “Lose Yourself,” his set list didn’t just focus on his own discography. The rap icon was joined by his mentor, Dr. Dre, onstage to perform “Still D.R.E.” and “Forgot About Dre.” The pair even nodded back to Snoop Dogg’s classic, “Nothin’ but a G Thang,” along with a cover of Tupac’s 1996 hit with Dre, “California Love” (which Snoop and Dre had previously resurrected a hologram of Tupac in the latter’s own 2012 headlining appearance).

Eminem’s mentee 50 Cent then took to the stage for a medley of “In Da Club” and “My Life,” giving the set a nice bookend appeal as it showcased their own hip-hop family lineage. Finally, Eminem was joined by longtime collaborator Skylar Grey as they performed multiple tracks, including “Stan,” “Walk on Water,” and “Love the Way You Lie,” showing off their electric chemistry.

ODESZA delivers a milestone performance with aerial drones, a live drum line, and many special guests 

Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight of ODESZA had a sparkling 2017 after releasing their critically-acclaimed studio album, A Moment Apart, which netted their first-ever Grammy nomination. What better way to cap a wildly successful year than a spring kick-off performance in one of the world’s most visible festivals.

Back in 2015, ODESZA made headlines at Coachella when they brought out USC’s full drum line for a stunning rendition of their track “Bloom,” along with a live remix of Alex Adair’s “Make Me Feel Better.” So the Seattle-based duo knew they had to one up themselves.

This year, Knight and Mills’ appearance was nothing short of cutting-edge as they filled the late night headlining slot on Coachella’s main stage. Time sped up and slowed down, hearts stopped and began racing all at once, and technological spectacle felt organic in ODESZA’s live performance at Coachella.

With this year’s inclusion of the highly-disciplined ODESZA drum line — which the pair has been incorporating in their album-accompanying “A Moment Apart” tour — Knight and Mills took this element to its height by incorporating drum line members throughout the entire set. It’s clear that the coveted ODESZA drum line has become a permanent mainstay during the most commanding moments of their live act.

Along the way, ODESZA brought a number of vocalists onstage to perform their various tracks from the latest album. Naomi Wild was first to take front and center in her live performance of “Higher Ground.” Wild’s mic had issues at the start, for which the design team quickly solved as the young singer belted her soft tune to an awe-inspired audience. To cap it all off, Knight and Mills brought out high-powered soul artist Leon Bridges to perform their single, “Across The Room,” as hundreds of aerial drones floated up into the California night sky to erect ODESZA’s icosahedron logo.

ODESZA have been diligently perfecting their live act over the years, working to incorporate immersive visual elements and surprise guest appearances along the way. But never before has an EDM act integrated such a captivating array of LED drones in their act to bring visual production from the screen into the sky. In addition to pioneering their own new genre, the boys can now count themselves spearheads for the visual production side as well.

Illenium brings his full AWAKE live band to the Sahara tent

Illenium is one EDM act that is currently smashing every bar he’s set for himself artistically; and with incredible candor and humility, one might add. The talented and focused artist out of Denver has been selling out arenas, collaborating with everyone whose anyone, and incorporating a live element to his shows. Now Illenium’s AWAKE act has become a mainstay at festivals, including band members Dabin, Day, and Said The Sky.

While in Indio Valley, the artist covered a full spectrum of his own classics in the Annika Wells-assisted “Crawl Outta Love,” his remix of Flume and Tove Lo‘s “Say It,” and his track, “Rush Over Me,”with Seven Lions and Said the Sky. The melodic dub step producer then paid homage to Excision and Zomboy before ending with his track with MAX, “Beautiful Creatures.”

Perhaps the shinning moment of Illenium’s Coachella debut came in the form of a live VIP of his track with 1788-L and close friend, Said the Sky, “Where’d You Go.” Fans have certainly been going crazy over the live edit online.

Migos is plagued by sound issues in the Sahara tent

After walking onto stage 30 minutes late, and having sound issues early on, people were apparently not happy with the Migos‘ performance. Yet, within a couple minutes, Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff easily earned the crowd’s forgiveness. The group began with “Higher We Go,” the opening track of Culture II, and by the time they slipped into their second song, “Slippery,” the crowd was in full-frenzy mode. Migos waited until the set’s final stretch to survey their biggest and most recent hits, which included the classic “Bando” for Offset (whose original was given to him by fiancée Cardi B).

“We thank God for making us the greatest group in the world,” Quavo proclaimed as a closing statement. It was the kind of humble arrogance that didn’t quite match the trio’s rather plagued live performance at Coachella.

THEY.’s performance included a nod to Kurt Cobain 

As THEY. took to Coachella’s Mojave stage, the rap/R&B hybrid duo surprised attendees with an refreshing and intriguing rock-crossover by covering Nirvana‘s “Rather Die.” Intriguing, because of how odd it seems to take on such a disturbing song and refit the track with a hip-hop drop. Refreshing, because hip-hop acts rarely, if ever, sample rock ballads. THEY. were certainly keen to rework a song from Nirvana’s Nevermind album beyond the wildly overdone “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Perhaps Kurt Cobain might have appreciated the subversive move.

Pregnant Cardi B brings out Chance The Rapper, Kehlani, and G-Easy 

Cardi B, who recently revealed her baby bump during an SNL performance, brought out a number of superstar friends during her afternoon Coachella performance, with live collaborations with Chance The Rapper on their single, “Best Life,” and G-Easy on “No Limit.”

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper also performed livcuts of “Bickenhead,” “Drip,” “Bariter Cardi” with 21 Savage, and her remix of Bruno Mars‘ “Finesse.”

Portugal. The Man trolls ODESZA fans, delivers rock history lesson 

Portugal. The Man are known for their silly pre-set messages. Just last week, the band used amusing musings like “Having fun? Getting fucked up? Talking politics at family dinners?” and “Kevin’s got a boner” at a performance in Reno, Nevada. During closing night of Coachella 2018, as the sun began to set, the Alaskan rockers delivered a message to ODESZA campers in quirky fashion.

Yet it wasn’t only fun and games for Portugal, as they spent the entirety of their set schooling attendees with a serious rock music history lesson. After kicking off with Metallica‘s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” the alt-rock band then surveyed a broad range of classics from Pink Floyd, T. Rex, and Black Sabbath, before ending with a “Hey Jude” sing-a-long.

“To anybody who says that there’s a lack of rock bands at Coachella, it’s not about genre — it’s about music,” the group’s front man shouted. “But if you are gonna complain about the lack of rock bands at Coachella, this is the only band here you need to see.”

THEY. drops off two new tracks, pledges consistency for 2018

Save for a few remixes and a Lido feature, hip-hop and electronic’s growing enigma THEY. has been relatively quiet following the release of their debut album Nü Religion: Hyena, released in early 2017. Now, the LA duo’s back with two new songs: “Ain’t The Same” and “Thrive.”

“Finally after a year, we did it guys,” they said in an Instagram Live before the songs came out. “New shit’s dropping. ‘Thrive’ is some aggressive shit, it’s different.” They added, “This is what we’re going to be performing at Coachella, along with a couple other songs. We’ve been workin’ really hard. I feel really excited about these two songs.”

While “Ain’t The Same” is similar to the duo’s earlier, toned-down material, “Thrive” is certainly a heavier number than the duo’s given fans before, capitalizing on the hip-hop front in their most upfront fashion to date, and promising a fiery Coachella performance just around the corner.

THEY. also promised they’re working to release two new songs per month this year, saying “ We’re going to be consistent as fuck…”

THEY. stand with one foot in the electronic classification and another firmly planted in hip-hop territory, yet the LA-based producer duo refuse to confirm to either. Which is probably what makes their brand of brooding, urban hip-hop and trap so sophisticated yet altogether absorbing. Following the Mind of a Genius-signed pair’s 14-track Nü Religion: Hyena LP, THEY. are closing out the year with a new remix, finding the perfect specimen in Charli XCX‘s summer hit “Boys.”

Earlier this year, the UK-bred songwriter recruited everyone from Diplo and Flume to Mark Ronson and Chromeo for the “Boys” video, and now the track is getting a deservedly extended shelf life by way of THEY. Laying down their snappy, percussive production style around the track’s infectious vocal offerings, THEY. swap out the original mix’s 8-bit accents and snares for tight hi-hat rolls, going with a futuristic R&B/pop theme on their remix that does Charli XCX justice on one of her biggest tracks to date.
