Festival goers traveling to the second weekend of Tomorrowland, held in Boom, Belgium from July 27 – 29, may be facing flight cancellations following the announcement of planned strikes from Ryanair staff. Inbound and outbound flights from Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Belgium are the specific locations in question due to a 48-hour strike between July 25 and 26. The strike was announced last week by the workers union representing Ryanair cabin and ground crews, Fórsa.
This marks the second strike by Ryanair employees this month — following a years-long conflict between the airline’s professionals, The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), and Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary. The first strike occurred in the Dublin airport on July 12 for a 24-hour period. The news is of course worrisome for artists and attendees traveling to the world-class EDM festival, the annual theme of which was announced as “The Story of Planaxis” earlier this year. For now, travelers headed to Tomorrowland may need to make alternative plans.
In addition to premiering three unreleased songs at Ultra 20, Axwell concluded their set by saying, “We are Swedish House Mafia for life this time.” Steve Angello’s talent manager, Scooter Braun, then took to his Instagram story following the set, and hinted, essentially confirming that Sunday’s SHM reunion was “the beginning” of something much larger.
Fans immediately began speculating over whether an arena world tour was in the works, or a possible summer festival run, despite the fact that most large festival bookings have been finalized for the 2018 season.
Following the SMH reunion at Ultra Miami last weekend, Tomorrowland may have further fueled fan hopes when they posted an image of the Belgian festival’s main stage on Twitter with the caption, “expect the unexpected.” The tagline is the exact same phrase that Ultra used when announcing the “secret guest” slot for it’s 20th edition.
Nothing has been confirmed, and the tweet has since been deleted, but the coin of phrase has sparked controversy that another secret guest appearance by SHM may be in the programming for Tomorrowland’s 2018 edition, “The Story Of Planaxis.”
On July 20-22 and 27-29, Tomorrowland 2018 will return to Belgium under the theme of “The Story of Planaxis.” While the meaning behind the theme is unknown for the time being, details are sure to emerge as registration dates approach.
Pre-registration begins Jan. 9, 2018. Global Journey sale begins Jan. 20. Worldwide pre-sale begins Jan. 27, with worldwide tickets on sale Feb. 3.
The 2017 event generated 77 million views on Snapchat, amassed 355 million minutes in YouTube views, and effectively reached 184 million people on Facebook. Tomorrowland’s reach as a major event, both physically and across social media, grows 2.4 times larger each year.
