The Gaslamp Killer issues new statement pleading innocence in light of defamation lawsuit

This post was originally published on this site

Last October, electronic music producer The Gaslamp Killer, real name William Bensussen, was accused of allegedly drugging and raping two women in 2013. News first arose when one of the alleged victims, Chelsea Tadros, first shared her account via Twitter, stating that the Los Angeles artist drugged her and a friend, RaeAn Medina, at a hotel party, where he then proceeded to allegedly have non-consensual sex with them both.

This subsequently led to Bensussen’s labels, Low End Theory and Brainfeeder, severing ties with the producer and sparked massive public outrage in the era of  #MeToo. In a new statement posted to The Gaslamp Killer’s Facebook page, Bensussen breaks his silence of seven months with details as to why he believes he is innocent and has filed for defamation.

Read his full statement below:

“Last October, Chelsea Tadros made false claims on Twitter about a consensual sexual encounter that I shared with her and her friend RaeAn Medina 5 years ago. Tadros claimed that I drugged her and Medina at The Standard Hotel during a daytime pool party, then took their incapacitated bodies to my home and raped them. Not only is this untrue, it is logistically impossible.

Despite having numerous witnesses dispute her story, I had to remain silent for legal reasons. I so badly wanted to defend myself right away and share the facts with details from my witnesses. Because the case is now public record, I am finally able to come forward.

I am 100% innocent of these accusations.

My only recourse was to bring a suit for defamation to prove my innocence. In suing Tadros, I am not trying to silence her. In fact, I am hoping to open a dialogue in which to examine this event in front of a judge and jury, rather than trial by social media.

It is important to note that no criminal charges were brought against me, and that I am the only person accused of this type of assault during the me too movement to bring a defamation suit against my accuser and be granted a trial. Furthermore, Medina has not affirmed nor corroborated Tadros’ accusations. In fact, in my 15-plus years of touring the world as a musician, no other woman has come out against me

Because the actual trial might be more than a year away, I feel it’s necessary to share these important facts from my case with you:

1. Judge Joanne O’Donnell has identified many inconsistencies in Tadros’ claim, and ruled that “Tadros’ statement contains a provably false assertion of fact that [I] drugged and raped Tadros…”

2. A toxicology expert specializing in date rape cases stated “It is in my opinion, to a reasonable degree of medical certainty that Tadros’ account of what happened on July 5, 2013 is virtually impossible.”

3. The sworn statement of eye witness #1, a friend of Medina’s, who directly contradicts Tadros’ claims about the events of that day. This witness reached out to me in support on the day of Tadros’ twitter accusation, even though I had only met him on the day in question 5 years ago and had not seen nor heard from him since.

4. The sworn statement of eye witness #2, my former roommate, who directly observed Tadros and Medina enter and exit my home in their own power.

Excerpts from these statements can be found in the following screenshots. If you‘d like to see more, there is also a dropbox link. After reading the above declarations by the judge and witnesses it is clear that Tadros’ claims are blatantly false.

I urge you to look at the facts objectively, as this false claim has changed my life forever. Within the first 24 hours of Tadros’ post, I received hundreds of death threats. I have subsequently lost everything that I have worked for; a career which took me 20 years to build. The damage done to my life, my friendships, my reputation, and my career is irreversible.

My life dissolved before my very eyes because of a single tweet. This type of reckless accusation undermines real sexual assault victims in their pursuit of justice. Therefore, it is with great care and awareness that I share my story. All I ask is that you take a moment to examine the facts.”

The Gaslamp Killer sues for defamation in aftermath of sexual assault allegations

This post was originally published on this site

In the aftermath of the published reports of sexual assault allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein — now known as the “Weinstein effect” — accusations arose that William Bensussen, best known as The Gaslamp Killer, had drugged and raped two women in 2013.

Chelsea Tadros shared a statement via Twitter that detailed her experience of meeting Bensussen at a rooftop party in L.A. with her friend RaeAn Medina. Tadros shared that the producer proceeded to drug them, rape them, and then later returned them to the front of the hotel. Bensussen went on to deny the allegations soon after.

Now, TMZ reports that Bensussen is reportedly suing Tadros, Medina, and Tadros’ boyfriend for $5 million in damages and for defamation. Pitchfork has also obtained the complaint, which reportedly details the allegations as “malicious and fabricated” and refers to the sexual encounter as “consensual.”

Two alleged witnesses are reportedly cited in the document —“Christopher S.” and “Peter R.” — who include that Bensussen did not in fact “spike, tamper with, or put anything in the drinks.” The two men also include that the women approached Bensussen initially and that the women were, “under their own power and did not appear incapacitated.”

While further details remain to unfold, in the meantime, The Gaslamp Killer has been dropped from his longtime residency with Low End Theory and had his forthcoming Australian tour canceled.

On October 12, Chelsea (who has asked to have her last name withheld) took to Twitter to allege that she and her best friend were drugged and raped at The Standard in Los Angeles by William Benjamin Bensussen, better known by his stage name, The Gaslamp Killer.

The Gaslamp Killer faced widespread backlash since the allegations were made — Low End Theory cut ties with the producer and he has had an Australian tour cancelled. Flying Lotus, one of the underground club’s co-founders, seemed to stand in solidarity with the musician at a recent performance, inciting a backlash of his own.

Following the incident, during his set at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on October 14, Flying Lotus ended his set with one of Gaslamp Killer’s songs stating, “The internet is a fuckin’ liar. Ain’t nobody judge and jury but the fuckin’ law, okay? … Thank you guys so much for coming, let truth and justice have its day.”

After Flying Lotus’ comments spread, fans and industry professionals expressed their outrage, prompting the artist to deliver an apology for his “insensitive comments.”

I wanted to sincerely apologize for my comments at my show. I realize they were insensitive. This is a tough time for all of us, as men and women. I’m having trouble finding my voice in all of this. I am truly heartbroken. My stage has always been a place for what’s in my heart until now. I feel as internet wielding people we have to learn to give each other space to feel, to honor each other’s reactions and experiences without bullying. I care about this community and its impact so much. -Flying Lotus

Low End Theory releases The Gaslamp Killer residency with the series

Low End Theory, an LA localized “weekly party series” that fosters hip-hop, experimental, and electronic aesthetics has released William Bensussen from his residency with brand.

Known by his stage name, The Gaslamp Killer, Bensussen’s discharge from Low End Theory arrives in the wake of the sexual assault allegations alleged against the artist just yesterday on Twitter by a user named Chelsea (@chelseaelaynne) who claimed that the DJ drugged and raped both her and a friend during a party at The Standard in 2013.

While Chelsea’s statement currently remains alleged, Low End Theory has decided to part ways with Bensussen, announcing Bensussen’s termination in an official statement likewise posted to Twitter.

Bensussen was supposed to appear at Low End Theory’s New York City event yesterday, the performance scheduled as a part of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival‘s (BEMF) tenth anniversary. BEMF cancelled the show, writing, “Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival has chosen to cancel the Low End Theory show. This is not the appropriate time to present these artists in light of the allegations that were made last night.”

The Gaslamp Killer has since denied the veracity of the allegations.

[UPDATE]The Gaslamp Killer accused of sexual assault in Twitter post; artist responds

This post was originally published on this site

Better known by his stage name The Gaslamp Killer, William Bensussen has been accused of rape in a recently published Twitter post that situates the alleged assault occurred four-years agoin 2013. According to the written account posted by a Twitter user named Chelsea (@chelseaelaynne), whose full name has not been disclosed, The Gaslamp Killer is said to have drugged Chelsea and her friend RaeAn during a party at the Standard Hotel. The artist allegedly handed each woman a drink that Chelsea presumes to have been drugged. “That was out first drink of the day. After that, everything is pitch black except for a few sharp but at the same time, blurry memories,” Chelsea writes.

Chelsea considers the sexual assault allegation to be confirmed by The Gaslamp Killer’s recent blocking of her Twitter account. “I would tag him, but today I noticed he has had me blocked, which pushed me over the edge and was the clearest admission of his guilt,” Chelsea stated, posting a picture of The Gaslamp Killer’s Twitter account, displaying a message reiterating that her account had indeed been blocked from viewing the DJ’s tweets.

While the sexual assault currently remains alleged, Chelsea followed her recent tweets with a screenshot of a direct message from The Gaslamp Killer, received by RaeAn. “Can we please talk right now? Your friend is accusing me of rape and I need you to back me up here,” the message reads.

The Gaslamp Killer camp has yet to make an official statement in response to these allegations. It is unclear at the time of publication if authorities are investigating these allegations.

UPDATE:

The Gaslamp Killer has released a statement of his own on Twitter where he denies the allegations and insists his interactions with the accuser and other alleged victim were consensual.
