Thousands evacuated from Fresh Island Festival in Croatia due to forest firesFresh Festival

Local forest fires brought Croatia’s Fresh Island Festival to a halt Tuesday morning, as thousands of attendees were forced to evacuate. The cause of the fire is still unclear, though local officials have confirmed the blaze began in a pine forest just a few miles from the beachfront festival on Pag, a northern island along the Adriatic Sea. No injuries have been reported.

Three firefighting planes were dispatched to extinguish the fire, which temporarily consumed nearby roads. Ante Dabo, mayor of the nearby town Novalja, told national radio that nobody had been injured and that the fire was under control.

The hip-hop and R&B event was forced to cancel the headlining set of rapper Tyga, but has announced via their Facebook that the festival would re-open its doors Tuesday afternoon.

Grant Kwiecinski, better known as Detroit-based DJ and producer GRiZ, has spent the last few years modestly making major career moves. Aside from his penchant for touring and festival performances, he released the second edition of his Chasing the Golden Hour mixtape series in 2017, and started quietly releasing singles towards the end of 2018. Now back in full force, GRiZ has released his sixth studio album, Ride Waves.

An album full of features, GRiZ maneuvers previously uncharted territories with high profile talent like Snoop Dogg, Bootsy Collins, and Wiz Khalifa, while bringing on some long-time favorites like Muzzy Bearr, Yoshi Flower (formerly of Gosh Pith), and Leo Napier. With funk and bass taking a front seat as always, Ride Waves expands on GRiZ’s classic sound over 14 tracks, which can all be streamed below.

GRiZ has announced his sixth studio album, Ride Waves, along with an accompanying US tour and released a fresh single off the album, “I’m Good,” to boot. In classic GRiZ style, the multi-instrumentalist has announced the upcoming work in a fluid and mindful process.

“I’m Good” serves an appropriate catalyst to the hype that GRiZ is capable of accumulating. The funk-fueled track has everything familiar with a party with GRiZ at the helm: fluid sax, a collective singing soulful positive messages, and drops that gives listeners time to get down. “I’m Good” is a track that is uniting, and considering the fact that GRiZ meticulously fleshes out his ideas and projects, unity will be a major theme in the full album The 14-track LP—judging from his features and past releases—will delve into hip-hop, soul, funk, all tied together with that curated GRiZ electronica. However, Ride Waves could be something completely new.

The artist has accomplished a lot in the past two years. He embedded himself in an array of communities and relationships, including his own creative exile, as well as philanthropic endeavors. He came out via a HuffPost op-ed in 2017, which led him to be named Michigan’s Face of Pride in 2018 by USA Today and partnered with Dan Savage’s Foundation, It Gets Better. The Guardian praised him for his efforts with GRiZMAS, which has raised more than $100,000 towards Detroit public school students.

Ride Waves will feature DRAM, Wiz Khalifa, the legendary Bootsy Collins, Muzzy Bearr, Matisyahu, The Harlem Gospel Choir, Chicago’s South Side’s Chicago Children’s Choir, and more. Be it musically or emotionally, there is sure to be something for everybody in this LP. Even Snoop Dogg sent in a verse from his studio in Long Beach.

With the mindful realization that not only his music but also his place as a public figure can be used as a force of intrinsic good, GRiZ’s Ride Waves looks to serve as an honest personal expression and a call to action towards the force of kindness, responsibility, and unity.

2018 has been a year of forward-thinking hard work from Don Diablo. Since the release of his sophomore album, Future, there’s been a lot to acknowledge regarding the Dutch producer, including remixes for Martin Garrix, Kygo, Diplo, and more, alongside various original works. Now, he’s decided to pay homage to the late Nate Dogg with his latest single “I Got Love.”

Dogg — who died tragically at the age of 41 — is considered one of the pioneers of West Coast hip-hop, coming up with rap legends such as cousin Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent. It may seem that Diablo is taking things in a unique direction here, but his previous single, “Survive” featured contemporary rapper Gucci Mane — proving his innovative moves to break into hip-hop’s rising popularity.

The track samples Dogg’s vocals from his 2001 release of the same name, which are layered over upbeat piano chords and subtle drum hits to create blissful future house vibes.

Snoop Dogg has made his position on experimenting with music quite prominent in recent years, branching out from his well-known rap career into ventures like his reggae ego Snoop Lion, and even into DJing that came alongside a highly talked-about Boiler Room set. He dives even deeper into the electronic space — this time, on the commercial side of the spectrum — with Julian Banks, Bassjackers, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike for an infectious, “Bounce.”

The single errs more toward Snoop’s roots, featuring silky verses from the rapper that lead into a festival trap-laden drop that feels a far cry from what one thinks they’d hear from his collaborators, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. While the piece might be a bit too rough for radio play, it hits hard on the main stage and will more than likely make its rounds as an anthem throughout the coming months.

Tha Carter V is here. Production credits are with Mannie Fresh, Swizz Beatz, Metro Boomin, Ben Billions and more. Lil Wayne starts the album off with a heartfelt, touching message from his mom, just so listeners know who the project is for. The next song features the late Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy or his more widely known stage name, XXXTENTATION.

After odes to his mother and the late rapper, “Dedicate” jumps into Tunechi’s recognizable flow with rhyme schemes that bounce like drums. He credits himself as the guy who started the face tattoo trend, reminding those who might have forgot about Wayne, after seven years since the album’s predecessor. The song ends with Barack Obama praising the rap icon next to the likes of LeBron James.

Wayne takes the high energy down a notch on “Let It Fly,” the first feature track. It’s with Travis Scott and touts the ASTROWORLD creators’ melodic, ambient soundscape while giving Weezy room to roll towards the end.

“Dark Side of the Moon” has Wayne’s singing, R&B side, featuring his attributed discovery and the lyrical hall-of-fame bound, Nicki Minaj. The track shows a softer side to Minaj as well.

“Mona Lisa” follows, featuring another lyrical trendsetter, Kendrick Lamar. Lamar’s verse is a Mona Lisa of verses, practically guaranteeing the song’s success right from the starting gate. “What About Me” features Wiz Khalifa‘s Taylor Gang signee, Sosamann and flaunts a laid-back, auto-tuned atmosphere with no rush. It’s a bit of a break from Lamar’s last tirade.

“Open Letter” is a declamation to anyone listening. Discussing about the rappers’ internal struggles with lines such as, “What’s the life expectancy if you don’t expect it.” The track is riddled with lines like this as an open letter to life. He gives a shout-out to the readers, which in this metaphor are the listeners.

“Famous” features Lil Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter on the hook. It’s about being famous, something Birdman Jr. has become accustomed to since the young age of 14.

Snoop Dogg lends recognizable melodies to his collaboration on Tha Carter V. This one again has the makings of a hit as well, as Wayne fluidly bounces along Broadus Jr.’s guitar.

Lil Wayne uses his mother’s vocals as a transition in “Took His Time,” which has a similar timbre to an artist Wayne was the first to sign to his Young Money Entertainment label, Drake. The next track, “Open Safe,” has that clap-clap-clap-clap atmosphere.

“Start This Shit Off Right” features Ashanti and Young Money Entertainment signee, Mack Maine. Ashanti brings those 2000 vocals back into the frame, proving Lil Wayne and R&B should hang out more.

Wayne gets soulful on “Demon,” showcasing his lyrical prowess with a contrast into soul. “Mess” is another blissfully melodic and vocally deliberate track.”Dope New Gospel” features Nivea, who was nominated for a Grammy for her collaboration with YoungbloodZ & Lil’ Jon‘s “Okay.”

“Used 2,” toward the end of the Carter V album, is an late Easter egg for those fending more poetry in modern rap. Another transition featuring his mother leads into Wayne’s final song, which starts off with sparking what one could presume to be a blunt.

Tha Carter V was meant to be enjoyed, according to Lil Wayne’s announcement of the drop earlier this week. After seven years of material, targeted features, and a nostalgic flow; it’s hard not to enjoy and feel some type of way.

“With this album… I’m giving you more than me,” the rapper said in his announcement earlier this week. “You gotta always remember that. This is four, five, six years of work that you’ll be listening to, and I hope you enjoy it. You don’t have to love it, you don’t even have to like it. Just hope you enjoy every time you put it on.”

Snoop Dogg is back — this time, to pay tribute to his love of cuisine and culinary talents.

The West Coast legend took to his Instagram and 26.4 million followers to announce the new cookbook will be called From Cook To Cook, with the caption, “platinum recipes from the boss doggs kitchen 👊🏿 the first ever snoop cook book comin soon to @ChronicleBooks.”

As for the type of food to expect, fans can look forward to 50 of Snoop’s favorite recipes — including baked mac & cheese, fried bologna sandwiches, soft flour tacos, and easy orange chicken, filet mignon, and even lobster thermidor. While these entrees are marijuana-free, Uncle Snoop includes his favorite go-to munchies and his own Gin And Juice concoction.

In a press release, Snoop states, “You know it’s blazin’ up in my kitchen. I’m takin’ the cookbook game higher with a dipped and whipped collection of my favorite recipes, ya dig?” The book is slated to be released on October 23rd, and is available for pre-order here.

The 19th annual edition of Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is officially in the books. After Beyoncé handed over her empowering main stage performance on Saturday night, fans probably wondered if the final day of Coachella could ever be as iconic. Fortunately for all, Coachella is a festival that always seems to top itself. Marquee acts, such as Eminem, Miguel, and Cardi B, gave attendees a second wind in the sweltering Indio desert with their closing day performances, along with burgeoning electronic talents ODESZAIllenium, and San Holo.

Here is DA‘s guide to the key moments of day three at Coachella 2018.

Eminem brings out an all-star cast in Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Skylar Grey, and more 

As Coachella’s closing headliner for an audience of nearly 100,000 people, Eminem knew he had a tough act to follow in Queen B’s landmark two-hour set (which made her the first ever woman of color to headline the festival). Marshall Mathers rounded up an all-star roster to join him on stage — including Dr. Dre50 Cent, Bebe Rexha, Skylar Grey, and Kehlani — to perform some of the biggest career hits.

While Mathers was sure to cover his golden-age hits “The Real Slim Shady” and “Lose Yourself,” his set list didn’t just focus on his own discography. The rap icon was joined by his mentor, Dr. Dre, onstage to perform “Still D.R.E.” and “Forgot About Dre.” The pair even nodded back to Snoop Dogg’s classic, “Nothin’ but a G Thang,” along with a cover of Tupac’s 1996 hit with Dre, “California Love” (which Snoop and Dre had previously resurrected a hologram of Tupac in the latter’s own 2012 headlining appearance).

Eminem’s mentee 50 Cent then took to the stage for a medley of “In Da Club” and “My Life,” giving the set a nice bookend appeal as it showcased their own hip-hop family lineage. Finally, Eminem was joined by longtime collaborator Skylar Grey as they performed multiple tracks, including “Stan,” “Walk on Water,” and “Love the Way You Lie,” showing off their electric chemistry.

ODESZA delivers a milestone performance with aerial drones, a live drum line, and many special guests 

Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight of ODESZA had a sparkling 2017 after releasing their critically-acclaimed studio album, A Moment Apart, which netted their first-ever Grammy nomination. What better way to cap a wildly successful year than a spring kick-off performance in one of the world’s most visible festivals.

Back in 2015, ODESZA made headlines at Coachella when they brought out USC’s full drum line for a stunning rendition of their track “Bloom,” along with a live remix of Alex Adair’s “Make Me Feel Better.” So the Seattle-based duo knew they had to one up themselves.

This year, Knight and Mills’ appearance was nothing short of cutting-edge as they filled the late night headlining slot on Coachella’s main stage. Time sped up and slowed down, hearts stopped and began racing all at once, and technological spectacle felt organic in ODESZA’s live performance at Coachella.

With this year’s inclusion of the highly-disciplined ODESZA drum line — which the pair has been incorporating in their album-accompanying “A Moment Apart” tour — Knight and Mills took this element to its height by incorporating drum line members throughout the entire set. It’s clear that the coveted ODESZA drum line has become a permanent mainstay during the most commanding moments of their live act.

Along the way, ODESZA brought a number of vocalists onstage to perform their various tracks from the latest album. Naomi Wild was first to take front and center in her live performance of “Higher Ground.” Wild’s mic had issues at the start, for which the design team quickly solved as the young singer belted her soft tune to an awe-inspired audience. To cap it all off, Knight and Mills brought out high-powered soul artist Leon Bridges to perform their single, “Across The Room,” as hundreds of aerial drones floated up into the California night sky to erect ODESZA’s icosahedron logo.

ODESZA have been diligently perfecting their live act over the years, working to incorporate immersive visual elements and surprise guest appearances along the way. But never before has an EDM act integrated such a captivating array of LED drones in their act to bring visual production from the screen into the sky. In addition to pioneering their own new genre, the boys can now count themselves spearheads for the visual production side as well.

Illenium brings his full AWAKE live band to the Sahara tent

Illenium is one EDM act that is currently smashing every bar he’s set for himself artistically; and with incredible candor and humility, one might add. The talented and focused artist out of Denver has been selling out arenas, collaborating with everyone whose anyone, and incorporating a live element to his shows. Now Illenium’s AWAKE act has become a mainstay at festivals, including band members Dabin, Day, and Said The Sky.

While in Indio Valley, the artist covered a full spectrum of his own classics in the Annika Wells-assisted “Crawl Outta Love,” his remix of Flume and Tove Lo‘s “Say It,” and his track, “Rush Over Me,”with Seven Lions and Said the Sky. The melodic dub step producer then paid homage to Excision and Zomboy before ending with his track with MAX, “Beautiful Creatures.”

Perhaps the shinning moment of Illenium’s Coachella debut came in the form of a live VIP of his track with 1788-L and close friend, Said the Sky, “Where’d You Go.” Fans have certainly been going crazy over the live edit online.

Migos is plagued by sound issues in the Sahara tent

After walking onto stage 30 minutes late, and having sound issues early on, people were apparently not happy with the Migos‘ performance. Yet, within a couple minutes, Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff easily earned the crowd’s forgiveness. The group began with “Higher We Go,” the opening track of Culture II, and by the time they slipped into their second song, “Slippery,” the crowd was in full-frenzy mode. Migos waited until the set’s final stretch to survey their biggest and most recent hits, which included the classic “Bando” for Offset (whose original was given to him by fiancée Cardi B).

“We thank God for making us the greatest group in the world,” Quavo proclaimed as a closing statement. It was the kind of humble arrogance that didn’t quite match the trio’s rather plagued live performance at Coachella.

THEY.’s performance included a nod to Kurt Cobain 

As THEY. took to Coachella’s Mojave stage, the rap/R&B hybrid duo surprised attendees with an refreshing and intriguing rock-crossover by covering Nirvana‘s “Rather Die.” Intriguing, because of how odd it seems to take on such a disturbing song and refit the track with a hip-hop drop. Refreshing, because hip-hop acts rarely, if ever, sample rock ballads. THEY. were certainly keen to rework a song from Nirvana’s Nevermind album beyond the wildly overdone “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Perhaps Kurt Cobain might have appreciated the subversive move.

Pregnant Cardi B brings out Chance The Rapper, Kehlani, and G-Easy 

Cardi B, who recently revealed her baby bump during an SNL performance, brought out a number of superstar friends during her afternoon Coachella performance, with live collaborations with Chance The Rapper on their single, “Best Life,” and G-Easy on “No Limit.”

The “Bodak Yellow” rapper also performed livcuts of “Bickenhead,” “Drip,” “Bariter Cardi” with 21 Savage, and her remix of Bruno Mars‘ “Finesse.”

Portugal. The Man trolls ODESZA fans, delivers rock history lesson 

Portugal. The Man are known for their silly pre-set messages. Just last week, the band used amusing musings like “Having fun? Getting fucked up? Talking politics at family dinners?” and “Kevin’s got a boner” at a performance in Reno, Nevada. During closing night of Coachella 2018, as the sun began to set, the Alaskan rockers delivered a message to ODESZA campers in quirky fashion.

Yet it wasn’t only fun and games for Portugal, as they spent the entirety of their set schooling attendees with a serious rock music history lesson. After kicking off with Metallica‘s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” the alt-rock band then surveyed a broad range of classics from Pink Floyd, T. Rex, and Black Sabbath, before ending with a “Hey Jude” sing-a-long.

“To anybody who says that there’s a lack of rock bands at Coachella, it’s not about genre — it’s about music,” the group’s front man shouted. “But if you are gonna complain about the lack of rock bands at Coachella, this is the only band here you need to see.”

Throttle and Niko the Kid unite on Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg’s hit collaboration ‘Signs’

Spinnin’ Records recruit Throttle is by all accounts closing out a breakout year, but as 2017 draws to a close, the Aussie beatmaker has one more gift up his sleeve as the “icing on the cake.” Teaming up once again with Atlanta’s Niko the Kid, the pair have joined forces on a new remix, honing in on some early 2000’s pop as the groundwork for their latest tag team.

Their target this time around was Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake‘s 2004 radio smash “Signs,” which sees them take the original’s glitzy disco-pop/rap crossover appeal and add some UK-garage-inspired flare. In essence, they’ve flipped the once radio-ready hip-hop select into a now certified dance floor ace.

The now nearly-vintage original cut landed on Snoop’s seventh studio LP, R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece. Upping the tempo considerably on the remix, Throttle and Niko work the original’s rich vocal samples into their own absolutely infectious house beat, breathing new life into one of Snoop’s better departures from west coast rap. Best of all, they’re giving away their new remix completely free of charge. Enjoy.
