Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA managing editor Robyn Dexter. When I started using SoundCloud in early 2014, I made playlists weekly (read: obsessively). I’ve backed off a bit in recent years, but I still take time to collect songs for my yearly “best of” playlist, which I create every January and add to throughout the year. In late December for the past five years, I’ve narrowed it down to my 50 favorite releases of the year. They range from hard-hitting anthems to serene soundscapes, which truly sums up my music preferences.

In 2019, I was fortunate enough to premiere a few of my absolute favorite tracks of the year, including The Midnight‘s remix of SYML‘s “Clean Eyes,” Com Truise‘s remix of Gold Fields‘ “Waterfall,” and Essenger‘s “After Dark.” (A big thank you to all the artists who choose DA as their platform to reveal new music—we love you!)

2019 was a stellar year for drum ‘n’ bass, exhibited in tracks like Kove‘s “Le Retour,” Koven‘s “Love Wins Again,” 1991‘s “Guiding Light,” Metrik‘s “Hackers,” and so many more. The genre took some fun twists and turns, which fans heard in Mat Zo‘s Latin-infused “Games” and Sub Focus‘ earth-shattering remix of Bring Me The Horizon‘s “Mother Tongue.”

This year saw the arrival of a slew of monstrous collaborations—some unexpected and some that simply made sense. Regardless, tracks like Sullivan King and Grabbitz‘s “Crazy As You” and Delta Heavy and Zeds Dead‘s “Lift You Up” blew my mind. I was delighted when Fox Stevenson and Feint teamed up on a remix of the former’s “Out My Head,” since it flawlessly combined both their styles.

Speaking of Fox Stevenson, the UK producer released his highly anticipated album, killjoy, this year, and it’s a dynamic journey through all sides of the producer’s capabilities. Goldroom wowed me with his double-sided, multi-faceted Plunge/Surface effort, which has quite a story behind it. I had a hard time picking a favorite from A R I Z O N A‘s nostalgic Asylum LP, which is gorgeous and heart-wrenching from start to finish. I also need to mention what was likely my most-listened-to album of the year, which isn’t on SoundCloud: Ollie Wride’s Thanks in Advance. It’s gold. I lived in the aforementioned albums this year, and I’m so grateful to the artists who made them for sharing their creativity with the world.

Without further ado, here are my 50 favorite songs of 2019, in no particular order.

LO’99‘s new iteration of his own track, “Stay High” with Doolie, recently hit the airwaves with a vengeance. The Australian producer’s dreamy original made its initial debut earlier in the fall, but this new VIP edition sees the artist prepping the tune for a late-night shadowy dance floor.

Mazare is celebrating a stellar first year with Monstercat by revealing a VIP version of his and RUNN‘s emotive “Where Do We Go.” In the new take on the track, Mazare lets the listeners sink deeper into the melodies that endeared them to the track in the first place. This drumstep-inspired tune is a divergence from the original’s strictly drum ‘n’ bass pattern and is a refreshing new spin on the tune.

San Holo‘s album1 has received a variety of remixes since its birth last September, but the bitbird head honcho has chosen to end 2019 with a 15-track set of remixes. This varied set includes a thought-provoking rework from Rootkit, who’s added a drum ‘n’ bass spin on “go back in time.” It’s a completely different way to experience the minimalist track, and the creativity is just bursting from this new version.

T & Sugah have really come out swinging with their latest RAM Records release. The Dutch duo has quite a story behind this powerful number, and it’s no wonder it’s as brilliantly polished as it is.

“‘Mithras’ is a special one for us, since we started working on it back in 2015,” the duo said in a Facebook post. “At the time it didn’t sound the way we wanted it to, but after having revisited it a couple of times over the years it’s now finally out on RAM Records! This is an example (and reminder to ourselves) that shows it’s better to be patient than to rush a tune.”

UKF‘s massive 10-year anniversary compilation kicked off with the release of Camo & Krooked‘s “Atlas,” and it ended the way it began: with a VIP mix of the same song. This approach to “Atlas” packs a bit more of a punch than its predecessor, but overall it’s different in fairly subtle ways. It’s one of those VIPs that’s fun to listen and re-listen to, discovering all its intricacies.

Canadian duo WE ARE FURY have released a melodic dubstep anthem, “Memories,” featuring RUNN, whose previous features include Illenium, Seven Lions, Dabin, Hotel Garuda, Bear Grillz, William Black, and more. WE ARE FURY are a go-to of Illenium’s for official remixes after reworking “I’ll Be Your Reason” and “Lost” on the future bass guru’s previous two albums.

“Memories” starts with lush synths, with dainty plucks introducing RUNN’s sultry vocals. A running synth builds the anticipation while percussion elements slowly enter. Synths continue to build the anticipation which drops into a hard-hitting hybrid of in-your-face future bass and dubstep rhythm. Hold on for the second drop, which throws the duo’s signature dark sounds and industrial glitchy fills among quite the energetic environment.

“Memories is a song about loss. RUNN created this world around the character by using very real human experiences and imagery,” the duo said of the release. “There are a couple lines in the song where she says all the character had left was ‘this old house’ and ‘the photographs of our better years.’ That really resonated with us and we built the whole message & concept of the song around that. The art is way more intimate than our usual stuff and we portrayed the character, symbolizing RUNN, sitting in said empty home looking at the Polaroids of the memories.

The message we want to pass along is we all go through loss, in many forms. Whatever it is you are going through you are allowed to mourn and experience it fully. However you have to keep going and eventually you will see why you had to go through those experiences in order to become the person you are now.”

Bishu‘s sixth Monstercat single comes at the listener swinging. He taps songstress Mister Blonde on the anthemic “Get To Know Me,” a booming future bass track that’s refreshing in a genre saturated with repeated sounds. Just like in last spring’s “Machine,” Mister Blonde’s sultry vocals again complement Bishu’s production perfectly, as she leads the listener up to a booming drop. “Get To Know Me” is part of the Canadian producer’s forthcoming debut EP, The Hali 2 Cali EP.

Since bursting onto the scene just two years ago, Midnight Kids have garnered support from some of the industry’s biggest names. From massive remixes to their debut original last June, this duo has shown no signs of slowing down—particularly with their newest remix: Porter Robinson‘s iconic 2010 “Say My Name.” Hardcore Robinson fans might be a bit wary of any remix of this notable track, but Midnight Kids have done it justice by focusing on the melodies and playing up the emotive aspects of the track. “Porter Robinson changed the way we look at making music,” Midnight Kids noted in their song description. “Without this record coming out things could have been different for us.”

I was obsessed with The McMash Clan’s swing-oriented moombahcore “Swing Break” in 2013 but had a hard time finding any other tunes that incorporated a swing element as flawlessly as that one. When I found out Teminite and Swing’it Dixieband had teamed up for a funky electro-swing track called “Party Like it’s 1923,” I was thrilled. Straight out of a Great Gatsby scene, this track employs bold horns, a swinging electro beat, and retro vocals for an overall classy and brassy aura. Teminite continues to demonstrate his versatility as a producer, giving fans the collaboration they never knew they needed.

Mazare returns to Monstercat after his October remix of Hailene with a gorgeously emotive collaboration with vocalist RUNN. The Italian artist also recently created an otherworldly drum & bass remix for Seven Lions and only continues to improve with each new piece of work. This new top-notch single has fans raving about the impeccable blend of RUNN’s flawless vocals and Mazare’s meticulous production—and rightly so. It’s one of the most blissful pieces of music to hit the Monstercat airwaves so far this year.

UKF has been showcasing some exceptional music so far in 2019, the latest of which is a collaboration of two drum & bass powerhouse acts: Hybrid Minds and Koven. Koven member Katie Boyle’s voice positively drips with emotion in this piano-fueled drum & bass number. It’s a vulnerable piece, and though the track is backed by a racing beat, it maintains an ethereal, wistful atmosphere the whole way through. The artists’ passion for their art form is raw and unguarded in “In Your Arms,” and it’s beautiful to experience.

Toronto-based producer Dabin has released the lead single from his upcoming sophomore studio album, proctoring an emotive, melodic piece, titled “Alive,” that offers the perfect soothing backdrop after a long day. Featured vocalist RUNN‘s voice lures the listener in, and her impassioned vocals carry the track against Dabin’s subtle production groundwork. Cinematic breaks frame the release, creating the perfect combination of live play and commercial crossover to give “Alive” a uniquely versatile appeal.

Dabin’s forthcoming LP, titled Wild Youth, is set to have 10 tracks, and the artist will embark upon a 14-stop Wild Youth tour in celebration of the album’s full release. “Alive” is out now via Seeking Blue, and Wild Youth is set to be released in full on March 22.

Hotel Garuda releases groove-filled new track, ‘Blurry Eyes’

After a brief hiatus, Hotel Garuda returns in full force with their new single, “Blurry Eyes.” Coming off an iconic performance at Holy Ship!, the duo enlisted former Illenium and Seven Lions collaborator RUNN for this release, which is set to be lead track on their forthcoming EP.

Out on Mom + Pop Music, this track hits all the spots with an upbeat tempo that seamlessly blends deep guitar riffs, major-chord synths, and Runn’s cheeky vocals, leaving listeners with some optimistic vibes for the summer. Regarding the release, Hotel Garuda had some words on the creative process:

“Going into this year we really wanted to make our mark with original work that spoke not only to our influences but to our experiences as well. Our first session this year was with RUNN and co-writer David Pramik, and sharing our experiences with them was a great way for us to channel our lives into music. We can’t thank both of them enough for being part of our musical journey.”

They’ll take the Pavilion stage at Firefly Music Festival on June 16, with additional tour dates to come.
