There’s just something about drum ‘n’ bass that’s always spoken to my soul. I remember hearing my first Pendulum song a decade ago and thinking “what on earth is this, and where can I get more?”

The genre began making its way into the electronic music sphere in the early 1990s, right around the time I was born. Its rapid breakbeats took over London and Bristol, ramping up the jungle and rave scene to 160-180 BPM. While still more widespread in the UK to this day, the genre has slowly trickled into the United States EDM scene. We still have a long way to go before drum ‘n’ bass artists are regularly installed as main stage performers at major US festivals, but there’s so much to discover and embrace in the US drum ‘n’ bass scene (I see you, Flite and Boxplot). There’s also an endless stream of quality dnb being churned out overseas, with imprints like RAM Records, Hospital Records, and Liquicity Records as strong as ever in their supporters and fan base.

I regularly tell people that have never really gotten into drum ‘n’ bass to just try. It’s a diverse and ever-evolving genre, full of sub-genres and offshoots. I guarantee you’ll find something you like in some format. Dig through the 100-song playlist I’ve compiled to celebrate 100 installments of this series to see if there’s something there for you!

Thank you, drum ‘n’ bass, for your tireless energy, emotive vocals, and the ability you always have to yank me out of a bad mood and reignite my love for electronic music in today’s day and age. Here’s to you, and the brilliant artists who create you.

Who would’ve thought Bring Me The Horizon and Sub Focus were a match made in heaven? The English drum ‘n’ bass producer has truly worked his magic on this subtle January release from the rock band, meticulously maintaining its delicate aspects while sprinkling in more intense drum ‘n’ bass elements. The beauty of this remix is that it doesn’t detract from the brilliance BMTH’s original. Instead, it gives listeners a refreshing new way to digest its intricacies.

Haywyre was the perfect person to tap for an official remix of Martin Garrix‘s “Summer Days.” The pianist brings an effortlessly groovy air to the track, incorporating funk-laden synths during the instrumental-focused sections and gorgeous piano chords to the vocal intervals. Like all Haywyre tunes, it’s impossible to not bob your head or tap your foot on this one. Check him out playing it live here.

In his new two-track EP for Liquicity Records, mystery producer Oakwite shines. “Chlorophyll,” in particular, is full of intrigue. The name for the song is fitting, as the artist appears to convert sunlight into alluring drum ‘n’ bass. The new body of work follows the February release of Oakwite’s bootleg of nothing,nowhere’s “Hammer,” which also proved to be beautifully unique.

London-based drum ‘n’ bass artist Etherwood is fresh off a new six-track release, which contains a graceful tune called “Away From It All.” Featuring a beautiful reoccurring piano melody and drifting vocals, this one instantly transports the listen to a still forest or a scenic vista. If the listener can fully submerge themselves in the sonic landscape Etherwood’s composed, it’s likely they’ll find themselves in a truly blissful state.

Speaking of six-track releases, Pierce Fulton, too, has released a new body of work. Hoarder’s Paradise made its full appearance on Potential Fun on June 14, featuring songs like “The Move.” This four-minute song is an introspective one, carrying with it an almost wistful theme as it ebbs and flows. Throughout the tune, piano melodies build from delicate to more forceful and are backed by a subtle but substantial beat. The journey-like qualities of “The Move” are completely entrancing.

Oakwite puts his unique stamp on his nothing,nowhere remix right off the bat by switching to a different key. He largely keeps the verses and bridges the same as the original, introducing a dramatic drum & bass rhythm for the chorus. The original track lends itself well to a drum & bass pattern, and elements like its melancholic guitar melody led one SoundCloud user to call it “emo dnb.” This fitting description makes an interesting niche for the same artist who (successfully, in my opinion) tackled Post Malone’s “Psycho.”

I’m still riding a high from The Knocks‘ St. Louis show last week, so they were bound to make an appearance in this week’s Beat Lab. The New York duo debuted this Wankelmut remix of “Retrograded” on Feb. 13, giving the smooth track a re-envisioning as a more house-oriented number. The German artist has crafted a lively beat around The Knocks’ catchy vocals, making this a stellar rendition of a standout New York Narcotic track.

Within the span of a month, London’s 1991 has blessed the music world with two of his creations: January’s “Guiding Light” and now “Illusions.” He builds the song dramatically, leading in with gradually crescendoing synths and hints of beautiful female vocals that make a full appearance as the introduction creeps up to the drop. 1991 once again flexes his ample command of the drum & bass realm with this brilliant blend of ethereal vocals and a racing beat.

“Made this just because I really love the original,” Grabbitz noted of his newest release: a remix of The Japanese House‘s 2018 “Lilo.” Where the original is a downtempo, introspective piece that drips with emotion and nostalgia, Grabbitz gives it a more upbeat rhythm and a subtle trap backbone. He leaves plenty of space for the English artist’s vocals to shine in the verses, but chops them up in an intriguing manner in the chorus, mixing them with a distinctive percussion pattern.

Feb. 22 has brought an impressive slew of EPs and LPs to the electronic music sphere—among them, Rameses B‘s. Spacewalk III: Alpha Cen‘s fifth track, “Get Through” with Veela, is a gorgeous, slow-burning example of the Leeds artist’s otherworldly production capabilities. “Veela’s vocals gives us a reason to get past even the most hardest of times, with her soothing yet striking tone of voice paired with minimalistic and melodic liquid drum and bass makes us believe that we can get through anything,” Rameses B observes in the track’s description.

Just a few weeks ago, Mad Zoo sent over an insane track from an artist they’d just signed called counsel pop. I was immediately drawn in by “fazeley industrial estate” and enthusiastically wrote it up. Only days later, the artist’s second track appeared on SoundCloud: “trino (counsel pop’s mental mix).” This one is more subdued than its predecessor but is still layered with gorgeous sound design and insane complexity that honestly transcends description. After hearing these first two releases, I’m even more excited for the artist’s debut EP, out a week from today.


Turning back time to the ’80s, We Are The Way For The Cosmos To Know Itself (WATWFTCTKI) present “Flashbacks,” a retro synthpop tune that drips with wistful nostalgia. The Danish pop act have crafted a retrospective song that’s true to its name. “Flashbacks” is brimming with pensive vocals, backed by a slow-moving, synth-laden beat. It’s a bit reminiscent of some of my favorite Goldroom songs, and that’s perhaps why I’m so drawn to it.


While I might not love Post Malone in his songs’ original forms, I’m all about some of the ingenious remixes that have been surfacing over the past few years. Like this one, for example. Oakwite has transformed “Psycho” into a groovy drum & bass rendition. While classified as a bootleg, Oakwite has crafted a smooth and clean take on the song that shows pure creativity and gives Postie’s hip-hop collaboration with Ty Dolla $ign a fresh, energetic vibe.


Los Angeles trio Wake the Wild have created the perfect feel-good anthem with their latest release, “Body Language.” They’ve intertwined elements of pop and funk for a dancefloor-primed single that’s authentically them. “When we wrote ‘Body Language’ it was just easy,” Wake the Wild say of the release. “It felt natural. Like the song was already there just waiting for us to unlock it. It’s fun, it’s upbeat, and it’s not trying too hard.” They cite influences like Disclosure and Michael Jackson in their music, something that’s evident in the cheery, bright feel of “Body Language.”


Drum & bass king Muzzy is prepping for the release of his massive EP, The Cascade, due out on Monstercat May 14. He’s kicked off the EP’s releases with “New Age” featuring Detroit powerhouse Celldweller. The track is pure energy and fury backed by top-notch quality, leading many SoundCloud commenters to relate it to respected Pendulum tracks. Fusing punk rock vocals with rapid drum & bass patterns, “New Age” shows Muzzy at his finest. The Cascade is sure to be worth the wait.
