For more than a decade, DJ Earworm has been blending the year’s top songs into a massive “United States of Pop” mashup at the end of each year. He began the series in 2007, kicking off with a combo of songs from Soulja Boy, Akon, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, Fergie, and more. It’s been 11 years since that inaugural mashup, and Earworm hasn’t slowed down in the slightest.
Khalid fans’ love will surely lie with Matt Medved‘s take on this Normani feature. “Love Lies” exuded a fierce sense of attraction for many artists, including Louis The Child, Snakehips, and Medasin, each of whom submitted revamps of the Khalid-catalogued favorite. Not one to be left standing outside of the remix ring, Medved strides in with a house-inflected flip that lends a velvety homogeneity to the raspy edge of Khalid and Normani’s original.
Seductively situated in deep-house territory, Medved’s version douses “Love Lies” in a noticeable, but unimposing underground groove. The remix relies on a mid-tempo supportive beat that, in characteristic house music fashion, keeps a steady, but unhurried pace. The viscous polish of Medved’s vision of the track seems only to amplify the harmonic refinement of Khalid and Normani’s duets, and much like Khalid and Normani’s vocals when joined, Medved’s effort is blissfully complementary to its predecessor.
Normani has teamed up with Calvin Harris on two new original tracks. After sparking rumors of a collaboration in the works when they were spotted walking the red carpet of the American Music Awards together, the Normani x Calvin Harris project has confirmed the two artists are walking the walk just a few months later.
“Checklist” and “Slow Down” sees the former Fifth Harmony member continue on her star-studded solo career, following work with Khalid,Kehlani and Quavo. The project also sees Harris exploring new territory heading into music with inspirations from reggae and dancehall. While his other contemporaries, Major Lazer and Dillon Francis, have done similar exploration on recent projects, Harris has shown his reign in the upper echelons of pop will continue as he bridges international sounds with mainstream top 40 accessibility.
