Each week, New Music Friday sweeps through with torrential force, showering streaming platforms with immeasurable amounts of new tunes. Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes serves as a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.
Genre-navigating dynamo Maya Jane Coles dons her Nocturnal Sunshine alias for “Pull Up,” a flippant hip-hop outing that arrives not as a standalone single, but as the edgy introduction to her sophomore Nocturnal Sunshine LP, Full Circle. Nocturnal Sunshine couples Gangsta Boo’s cautionary verses with the dexterous deadpan of Young M.A’s flow on the slow-rolling production.
The dark, undergirding background beat is devoid of the heavy, sustaining bass familiar to Nocturnal Sunshine’s aesthetic, but not to the detriment of “Pull Up.” Nocturnal Sunshine’s lighter approach to bass on this record allows the cut to fully foreground Gangsta Boo and Young M.A’s contributions, which glide atop sinister tones to extend the menacing invitation of the track’s title.
Maya Jane Coles has returned with her latest under her own name, “Other Side.” After some years of exploration across her dubbier alter ego, Nocturnal Sunshine, and lo fi electronica under Maya Jane Coles, “Other Side” is a triumphant return to the unique frame of deep house that she’s built her career on. Otherworldly and minimal, Coles shows her best in class sampling abilities and taste, in a song that progresses in such a soothing way it’s almost more of a dance floor lullaby. It’s a great reminder of why the London-based producer is so good at what she does, building tonal bass and intriguing vocal notes into a work of art.
“Other Side” is out now via Coles’s label I/AM/ME.
