Tom Morello has released his first-ever solo album under his own name, entitled The Atlas Underground. As an undisputed rock icon and top guitarist, Morello has led bands like Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave and now Prophets of Rage to success through making music that centers around raw, real emotion. Now, the Guitar Hero III boss has made it his mission to join together the energy behind rock music together with modern electronic dance music through a collaborative, focused album.

Enlisting artists from the electronic world that inspire him, Morello has created an album that bridges a gap between a generation of those who grew up when rock music was king, and those who have been raised at the height of electronic music’s success. For the latter, Morello explained in conversation with Zane Lowe at his Los Angeles stop of The Atlas Underground Experience that his intention with this album is to “inflict” the energy of guitars onto the next generation, inspiring future rockstars along the way. Working with stand-out artists like Knife Party, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki and K.Flay, Morello has created something true to himself in its motivations in social justice. Not only that, but the music succeeds at its intention to make us both rock out and dance.

Stream if you dare, as this flame-throwing dubstep track from Kill The Noise, “Black Magic,” will leave your eardrums scorched, but entirely satiated.

Zeds Dead offers up the score for entertainment of the entirely un-dead variety with their timelessly terrifying, “Demons.”

Careful – Megan James’s delectably delicate voice may seem perfectly benevolent, but make no mistake: lofty pipes like hers are witchy by nature.

ZHU plays maestro for all things that boogie and bump in the night with “Nightcrawler.”

Taste the psychedelic strangeness of An-Ten-Nae and Alice D.’s “Raindrops On Roses,” and fall into their preternatural purgatory.

Ever wanted to dance with the devil himself? Habstrakt‘s harrowing house track, “She Goes,” is an opportunity to do just that.

Zomboy invites you to venture through his dubstep-riddled zombie apocalypse with “Ressurected.”

Crowned prince of menacing sound design, Drezo sprinkles a ghastly vocal cut and some unearthly growls in one of his most downright evil releases, “Dead.”

Float through the ectoplasm of The Upside Down with this exquisitely melodic synthwave track direct from the second Stranger Things soundtrack.

We’re not really sure what Moody Good is investigating in the malignantly-sampled “This Is The Investigation,” but we’re pretty sure it’s not natural.

Step inside Pryda‘s low-lit techno tunnel and experience the roaring mania of “Rebel XX.”

Those with a predilection for the creepy crawly end of the electronic continuum need only submit themselves to Knife Party‘s iconic “Centipede.”

Street Fever’s winding techno musings inside “Dispose” may be simplistic, but they’ll leave listeners reeling with haunted rejoice.

Feed Me‘s two-headed trap/dubstep hybrid “Pink Lady” will have you seeing phantom strobes well into the afterlife.

It’s virtually impossible to overload on REZZ tracks during any month, but it’s especially tricky this time of year. Her immortal state of “Delusion” thrusts listeners below ground, where the most formidable forces can frolic freely.

HARD‘s once defunct Day of the Dead property is officially back, slated for November 3 at the event’s original home at LA Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles. While rumors have been circulating since the event’s announcement earlier this summer, and a too-good-to-be-true lineup surfacing shortly thereafter, the southern California events giant has now followed up with their official roster for 2018’s event, and its damn near just as good. Headlining DOTD’s comeback edition is Justice, breaking out their live stage rig for one final outing, exactly six years to the day after the Parisian legends headlined the inaugural Day of the Dead. South African rave-rap pioneers Die Antwoord and Knife Party also top this year’s lineup, along with a stacked cast of supporting acts.

House heroes Thee Mike B, J. Phlip, Jack Beats, and Shiba San also make their way onto this year’s billing, along with Lee Foss, Cashmere Cat, and DNMO among others. Tickets for HARD Day of the Dead on sale September 27 at 12:00pm PST.

Knife Party listeners have an opportunity to become better “Internet Friends” with the momentous dubstep duo via “Knifecast,” a radio show-style podcast that gathers Knife Party constituents Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen behind the mic to talk a variety of topics, and as “Knifecast” continues to roll out episodes, to presumably share news about forthcoming releases. Knife Party kicked off the show’s live debut on September 20. Swire and McGrillen introduced the “Knifecast” concept as one that rests “halfway between a podcast and playing music” and were adamant that they didn’t want to just produce a weekly mix. Knife Party additionally plans to host guests, and on-air Q&A sessions featuring fan-submitted questions as “Knifecast” further develops.

Knife Party provided a memorable finale to their inaugural installment of “Knifecast” with their inclusion of a lengthy ID at the episode’s end. A dub-heavy number that wasn’t wanting for wubs, the ID is a heady combination of gritty vocal overlays and wallops of bass. Technical elements aside, the ID indicates that new Knife Party music could be on its way very soon, and “Knifecast” appears to be the primary vehicle of any ensuing new material’s debut.

Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and Prophets of Rage, has gathered an insane, A-list group of rappers and dance producers for his upcoming new solo LP, The Atlas Underground, coming out October 12 via Mom + Pop Music. Collaborators on the project include Big Boi, Killer Mike, RZA, Steve Aoki, BassnectarPretty Lights, Herobust, Knife PartyWhethanVic Mensa, Gary Clark Jr., Portugal. The Man, and more. He’s already dropped two singles from the album: “Battle Sirens” featuring Knife Party and “We Don’t Need You” featuring Vic Mensa.

Morello told Lars Ulrich, drummer for Metallica, on his Beats 1 radio show, It’s Electric!, “I wanted to make a record that was the [Jimi] Hendrix of now,” which he described has three components: extraordinary guitar playing that falls outside the norm, creating radio songs that connected with a mass audience, and fashioning a new genre of music. The idea was to combine Morello’s analogue guitar sound with his favorite producers, rappers, musicians, and singers of today. Noting the shared DNA between electronica and metal after listening to Knife Party and Skrillex, Morello became illuminated to the idea of making a cross-genre project, and now in a few months it looks like it’ll finally materialize.

Drum ‘n’ bass dynasty, Pendulum, sent the EDM world reeling when they reunited for a live set at Ultra in 2016 after a five-year hiatus, with new tour dates and festival appearances following soon after. But as of this March, fans have been writhing in anticipation after the group announced there was a remix album in the works, consisting of both their most-famed hits and personal favorites.

Finally, the prolific collection has arrived, with offerings from some of the scene’s most profound presences, including Skrillex (the previously shared “The Island, Pt. 1 (Dawn)“) and drum ‘n’ bass counterparts, Noisia (“Hold Your Color”). Other outstanding offerings include that of Pendulum’s own dubstep duo Knife Party, consisting of the former’s founding members, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, for a full-throttle hardcore remix of “Blood Sugar;” as well as a racing rendition of “Witchcraft” from Pegboard Nerds; and ATTLAS gets uncharacteristically dark for a “Streamline” switch-up.

Pendulum will be touring modestly this summer, making stops in Romania, Ibiza, and even the U.S., for all of which fans would be hard-pressed not to hear some of these new momentous revisions.

Pendelum new album 2018

Just days after the announcement of their forthcoming album, Pendulum have revealed another huge component of The Reworks: a track list.

The 12-track remix album will include reworks of iconic songs like “Watercolour” and “Witchcraft” from music greats like Skrillex and Noisia. From the looks of the diverse lineup of remixers, innovation and talent are sure to shine on this compilation of some of Pendulum’s most beloved tracks.

The Reworks will be the band’s first album in seven years, and releases will begin on March 16 leading up to the June 29 official release.

Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA music editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic — to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery — DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.


Over the past few weeks, the United States has been racked with harsh winter conditions. As cruel as winter can be, there are some songs make the perfect soundtrack for the more serene, peaceful side of the season. Ennja’s latest release, “Mirrors” is such a song. With glistening vocals and a minimalist, ambient pattern, the nearly 7-minute song is an ethereal journey that encompasses the sounds of the season in an impeccable manner.


StéLouse has been on a roll lately, releasing a fiery cover of Post Malone just last month and following it up with a fresh flip of Khalid‘s “Young Dumb & Broke.” He’s transformed the R&B track into an EDM-friendly future bass remix that’s more lighthearted than its foundation track. “[I] wanted to throw it back to some of that OG StéLouse sound I was doing back in ’14-’15,” the producer explains.


Crystalize promised his fans a big 2018, and he wasn’t kidding. Just four days into the new year, he unleashed a powerful remix of Knife Party‘s iconic “Rage Valley.” It kicks off with pure bass madness that’s rings true to the song’s name. Halfway through, Crystalize steps back, then builds to something even more intriguing: a shimmery, synth-laden, downtempo pattern that’s bursting with creativity and passion. The second half of the song is by far my favorite, and it makes me wish I had more than a minute and a half of it.


It’s been 14 years since ATB‘s “Ecstasy” came out, but passing time hasn’t stopped producers of all persuasions from modernizing the track in their own way. The latest such artists are “8-bit rogue” duo Pixel Terror. Their revival of “Ecstasy” uses the original’s vocals to draw the listener in before building into a formidable melodic drop. Its harmonized layers of synths lay the groundwork for a rework that’s glitchy and computerized, while still maintaining the emotive power of the root song.


BIJOU is in for a huge year. Just watch. The g-house guru has been cranking out a steady stream of top-notch songs for a few years now, making appearances on AC Slater‘s Night Bass imprint and kicking it into high gear the past few months with originals like “Warning” and “Assassin.” He tells of the work that went into his latest, “Count On Me,” on SoundCloud. “This song has been over a year in the making with over 10 different versions worked during that time. This final record is one that is a crossover record with Kaleena’s beautiful vocals, but a dark and driving drop that has the potential to be a dance floor killer.”
