Essenger‘s forthcoming album on FiXT Neon has been full of surprises. In his latest single release, “Lost Boys,” he recruits synth-rock trio Young Medicine. The nostalgia-inducing tune is full of twists and turns, creating an air of mystery in the beginning before building to include a plethora of dramatic rock elements.

Foxhunt‘s new album, Unhallowed, is an intense journey from start to finish. From hard-hitting “Macabre Magnifique” to the emotive “Memorium,” this 11-track LP has it all. As someone who loves electro-swing, a track called “1932” caught my ear. A pounding bassline contrasted with retro vocals and horns makes for such a fun listen.

Flite just continues to get better and better. His new two-track Liquicity EP is one of his finest releases to date, with the first half bringing “Joy” to the listeners’ ears right away. A dreamy melody drifts leads into a relaxing drum ‘n’ bass pattern, topped off by powerful vocals that proudly proclaim “I give you love / you bring me joy.”

Party Ghost takes a subdued approach to his newest piece of work, “Awake,” capturing the first waking moments in a delicate and contemplative manner. The producer says he was inspired to incorporate guitar elements into the track after playing consistently, and the result is peaceful and soothing.

I first fell in love with Matt Van‘s “Conifer” upon its initial release in early December and wondered how other producers would interpret his beautifully wistful tune. Summer Was Fun follows Direct and Mr FijiWiji in reworking “Conifer,” adapting the song in an upbeat and refreshing manner.

When I started using SoundCloud in early 2014, I made playlists weekly (read: obsessively). I’ve backed off a bit in recent years, but I still take time to collect songs for my yearly “best of” playlist, which I create every January and add to throughout the year. In late December for the past five years, I’ve narrowed it down to my 50 favorite releases of the year. They range from hard-hitting anthems to serene soundscapes, which truly sums up my music preferences.

In 2019, I was fortunate enough to premiere a few of my absolute favorite tracks of the year, including The Midnight‘s remix of SYML‘s “Clean Eyes,” Com Truise‘s remix of Gold Fields‘ “Waterfall,” and Essenger‘s “After Dark.” (A big thank you to all the artists who choose DA as their platform to reveal new music—we love you!)

2019 was a stellar year for drum ‘n’ bass, exhibited in tracks like Kove‘s “Le Retour,” Koven‘s “Love Wins Again,” 1991‘s “Guiding Light,” Metrik‘s “Hackers,” and so many more. The genre took some fun twists and turns, which fans heard in Mat Zo‘s Latin-infused “Games” and Sub Focus‘ earth-shattering remix of Bring Me The Horizon‘s “Mother Tongue.”

This year saw the arrival of a slew of monstrous collaborations—some unexpected and some that simply made sense. Regardless, tracks like Sullivan King and Grabbitz‘s “Crazy As You” and Delta Heavy and Zeds Dead‘s “Lift You Up” blew my mind. I was delighted when Fox Stevenson and Feint teamed up on a remix of the former’s “Out My Head,” since it flawlessly combined both their styles.

Speaking of Fox Stevenson, the UK producer released his highly anticipated album, killjoy, this year, and it’s a dynamic journey through all sides of the producer’s capabilities. Goldroom wowed me with his double-sided, multi-faceted Plunge/Surface effort, which has quite a story behind it. I had a hard time picking a favorite from A R I Z O N A‘s nostalgic Asylum LP, which is gorgeous and heart-wrenching from start to finish. I also need to mention what was likely my most-listened-to album of the year, which isn’t on SoundCloud: Ollie Wride’s Thanks in Advance. It’s gold. I lived in the aforementioned albums this year, and I’m so grateful to the artists who made them for sharing their creativity with the world.

Without further ado, here are my 50 favorite songs of 2019, in no particular order.

After a few days of hard-fought voting, Monstercat fans have selected their top 40 songs of 2019.

The Canadian label revealed that fans picked RIOT‘s “Blackwater” as their No. 1 song of 2019, followed by Bossfight‘s “Overdose” and Grant‘s “Wishes.” This is the second year in a row that RIOT has topped the Monstercat charts, with 2018’s “Overkill” making its mark last year. Other notable releases on the charts include Pegboard Nerds‘ “Gunslinga” and Pixel Terror‘s “Amnesia,” which follow Bossfight and Grant, respectively. Voting for the annual list opened Dec. 3 and closed Dec. 5, and fans were able to vote for up to 10 songs.

In addition to the label’s fan-voted Best of 2019 list, listeners can find Monstercat staff picks in the latest episode of Call of the Wild.

Following a slew of successful releases earlier this year, Kansas City-based artist Essenger is back to kick off his forthcoming LP with its title track, “After Dark.”

“After Dark” is a beautifully moody synthwave-oriented release, featuring the artist’s own melancholy vocals. Essenger drives his listeners deep into the unpredictable dark of night, beginning with a dreamy melody that drifts throughout the song. His voice gracefully sets the tone for the nostalgic soundscape he’s built over the course of the song’s duration. A shadowy drop adds to the overall mystery, and a powerful guitar melody near the end closes the song on an authoritative note.

Monstercat fans will likely recognize his name from August’s “Berzerker” with Mazare, and Seeking Blue fans will remember his voice from Dabin‘s “Home.” In addition to these high-profile projects, the producer has been hard at work over the course of the year on solo projects like “Dissolve,” “Quivira,” and “Afterburner.”

I’ve loved Maduk and Dennis Pedersen‘s “Miles Apart” since its release last spring and was intrigued to see that Fox Stevenson had done a remix of the tune for Liquicity‘s Reflections Part 3. In true Fox Stevenson fashion, the producer has flipped the tune into a more energetic iteration, complete with his own harmonies underneath Ella Noël’s. It’s flawless.

Tobtok‘s name seems to be popping up everywhere, and his funky vintage style of house music keeps drawing me in. His latest is a collaboration with Adam Griffin and vocalist Hayley May. With a bold, anthemic melody and steady grooving beat, “The Stand Off (I Want You)” is irresistible. The Swedish producer knows how to craft tunes for the dance floor, and this is ready for just that.

Last month brought the arrival of a new Dimension song, “If You Want To”—an aggressive drum ‘n’ bass number with a dramatic, foreboding tone. Here in the following month, the British producer has reworked his own song into an electro interpretation, fueled by the sultry spoken vocals. This one has a more laid-back feel, but its underlying orchestral elements give the tune a bit of an eerie feel.

At long last, the second remix EP for The Midnight has arrived via Silk Music. It’s been more than two years since the release of the first one, but it appears lush remixes featured on this new collection have been worth the way. This take on the Nocturnal song is breathtaking, as Kobana builds a rich sonic landscape with his progressive house-inspired version of the song.

Essenger‘s new single, “Tether,” combines a wide range of styles effortlessly. It opens with a wistful guitar melody, leading into a nostalgia-fueled verse from the producer, who does his own vocals. “Tether” drips with emotion from start to finish and seems to encourage the listener to look inward and absorb the very soul of the song in a raw and real way.

A new set of remixes of The Midnight draws near. The Midnight Remixed 02 arrives on Silk Music on Sept. 27, previewed by this exceptional rework of “Shadows” by Uppermost. The French producer bathes the duo’s original in light, bringing it out of the, erm, shadows, to give it a blissful new tone.

Grum‘s latest Anjunabeats venture is a rework of Luminary‘s “Amsterdam.” The four-minute introspective piece is saturated with emotive trance goodness, composed of dreamlike synths, accented melodies, and drifting vocals. It’s dramatic and infectious.

We’re just a week shy of Moon Boots‘ new album, Bimini Road, and the producer continues to drop hints of what fans can expect from his second studio album. Moon Boots taps vocalist Nic Hanson for “Clear,” crafting a clean-cut, soulful atmosphere, with a dance floor-ready beat.

Dabin and Essenger‘s original “Home” tugged at listeners’ heartstrings all around the world upon its initial release. Now, with Dabin’s Wild Youth (The Remixes) compilation making its debut, fans can experience songs like “Home” in a new light, thanks to talented producers like Mazare, who adds a whole new layer to the emotive core of the tune.

On Aug. 30, Danny Howard relaunched his Nothing Else Matters imprint and celebrated with the release of a new song: “If You Were” with Eli & Fur. This six-minute house heater is the perfect combination of sultry vocals and irresistible beats.

Honey & Badger and kramder burst in, guns blazing, on their latest collaboration, “Da Pinte.” This new CONFESSION release seems to be all power at first, but upon introducing a merry piano theme, it’s apparent this trio of artists know how to combine forceful beat with a groovy melody. Between the vocals, pounding bass, and infectious melody, “Da Pinte” has been stuck in my head all week.

Last Island‘s new EP is a work of art. The Scottish artist just unleashed his Sustain EP, which spans five tracks and sounds best when listened to cohesively. “Emerie’s Cave” serves as a clear introduction, leading into a whole collection of some of his best work, including the final track, “Let Stars Fall.” “I wanted to create a euphoric and synth rich sound with the feeling of traveling through into a new world,” he says of the compilation. And that he did.

Astrale has taken on the task of covering and reworking The Midnight‘s formative “Kids.” Starring Essenger on vocals, this duo have revamped the bittersweet nostalgia of the original into a piece that’s fully their own. The initial two minutes feel like an anticipatory build, dropping into a heavier bed of synths for a dramatic ending of the song.

Groovy beats and funky piano melodies abound on AMTRAC‘s new release, “Formal Disco.” Released via his own Openers Records, AMTRAC shines on this latest track, seamlessly melding a smooth bassline with an irresistible melody. He kicked off his 2019 with the more subdued “Just” in February, but he readies himself for the summer months with this more upbeat original, which he says is a “long overdue follow up” to 2017’s “Informal Disco.”

Nora En Pure consistently delivers a sweet-to-the-ears sonic experience, and her latest is no exception. “Birthright,” released in original club mix and radio edit formats, features a serene piano melody, propped up by a low-key backbone of percussion. At seven minutes long, the club mix is primed to serve as a soothing outro for a night of dancing or simply bring a listener peace during a stressful time.
