Shaq reveals he performs as DJ Diesel for free, ‘for the sport of bass music’Shaq DJ Diesel Live

In a recent interview with SiriusXM, Shaquille O’Neal compared bass music to game seven of a championship game. The wholesome personality said in the interview a lot of people ask him why he performs for free, to which he responds “I’m doing it for the sport of bass music.”

He goes on to describe when he started DJing in 1988 with an SP1200 Gemini mixer he got from a pawn shop. When he retired from the NBA in 2011, he needed to fill that void of excitement he used to get from roaring crowds after a Shaq slam. So he went to Tomorrowland and was shocked by the pure energy of the fans and made the connection there are only two things that help one stop all the negativity in their life: sports and music.

NGHTMRE enlists Holy Goof, Effin, and Crankdat for new remixes of A$AP Ferg collaboration, ‘REDLIGHT’NGHTMRE Lean Back

NGHTMRE has taken his career to the next level in 2019, especially when it comes to showing off his versatility. The producer has teamed up with everyone from A$AP Ferg, to Lil Jon, to Shaquille O’Neal under his DJ Diesel moniker, staying true to the heavy-hitting bass ethos he’s built through his catalog while creating a new dynamic via hip-hop collaboration and further infusion into his style.

Earlier this year NGHTMRE showcased this new direction with collaboration with A$AP Ferg, “REDLIGHT,” which is undeniably one of his biggest hits. He’s continued to celebrate the single’s success with a fresh batch of remixes from Crankdat, Holy Goof, and Effin that make the single more friendly for a festival main stage. This new batch follows up a recent re-work from Flosstradamus.

Each remixer puts their own unique spin on the “REDLIGHT.” Crankdat twists the release into a dubstep sizzler with screeching synths and heavy drops. Holy Goof goes the bass house route, while Effin also stays true to his low end-fueled aesthetic for his rendition.

NGHTMRE recently announced a new contest for those who are fans looking to see him live and win a new comic book. The contest enlists fans to create a video to accompany “REDLIGHT,” and ten winners will be selected to win two tickets to a show in addition to NGHTMRE’s comic book.

Year after year, the most in-demand electronic acts from across the globe
and their cross-continental patrons gather in Boom, Belgium for what is unquestionably one of the most bonkers celebrations in dance music. This year, for its 15th anniversary, the festival saw familiar faces from across the electronic genre continuum, like techno tidal wave and Belgian native, Charlotte de Witte, trance’s enduring patriarch, Armin van Buuren, and the Godfather of EDM himself, Tiësto; while DJ Diesel (Shaq) caused quite a ruckus over at the main stage for his Tomorrowland dubstep-fueled debut.

The quintessential dance music domain saw a colossal main stage revamp of its 2012 theme, the Book of Wisdom. More larger-than-life performances are practically guaranteed for weekend two, which kicks off Thursday July 25, and closing out on Monday July 29.

NBA Hall-of-Famer turned touring DJ, Shaquille O’Neal aka DJ Diesel, is the centerpiece of a new TNT docu-series, Shaq Life, about O’Neal’s life after basketball.

The series, produced by The Content Group, will give fans behind-the-scenes content of the four-time NBA champion’s life after retirement, which includes Vegas DJ sets, touring, commercial and film work, various appearances, being a business owner of his Big Chicken restaurant, and his five kids.

“Over the years, I’ve had many endeavors outside of sports but never this many all at once,” O’Neal said in a statement. “I’m ready to bring viewers along for the wild ride that is my life.”

O’Neal will soon embark on his “Summer of Shaq” tour after bringing back his Fun House carnival event to Miami Music Week. He released a single with NGHTMRE and Lil Jon, “Bang,” earlier this year, and he’s set to play sets with some of bass music’s heaviest hitters after being the special guest at Lost Land 2018. He also recently signed a residency with Wynn Nightlife as DJ Diesel.

Whether he’s collaborating with DJ Diesel and Lil Jon or the Chainsmokers, NGHTMRE seems to have something under the hood that manages to keep fans on their toes at all times. This time around, the ace up NGHTMRE’s sleeve comes by way of a new collaboration with none other than A$AP Ferg. The Gud Vibrations helmer announced the new track and music video on his social media channels. Ferg and NGHTMRE’s new track is dubbed “REDLIGHT,” and it will be released on March 28.

Given the new tune’s release proximity to Ultra Music Festival, it begs the question as to if fans can expect A$AP Ferg to make an appearance during NGHTMRE’s back-to-back set with SLANDER at the festival for what would surely be a raucous live debut of the new joint cut. From the brief teaser video that was posted online, the “Grave” producer seemingly returns to his menacingly hard-hitting form on “REDLIGHT,” and with the assistance of the Trap Lord himself, NGHTMRE might have one of his biggest tracks of the year on deck just in time for one of his biggest festival outings of 2019.

Shaq confirms he’s working with Diplo on new musicShaq Fun House 1

Sometimes there are cultural icons so great, the media consuming public almost demands a collaboration of some sort—think Watch The Throne, Virgil Abloh and Louis Vuitton, or that time the Jetsons met the Flintstones. Now though, we might be coming up on one of those moments again as Shaquille O’neal confirms his latest venture as DJ Diesel—a collaboration with Diplo.

In a recent interview with Page Six promoting the third installment of his Fun House party concept, Shaq confirmed he’s in the lab with Diplo working on new music. The famed center even lit the beacon for a Skrillex collaboration, naming the two producers as figures to aspire to in the music space. Says Shaq,

“I really look up to Diplo and Skrillex. I’m working on some music with Diplo at the moment and would love to get in the studio with him and Skrillex soon,”

Outside of basketball, the 2016 NBA Hall of Fame inductee has enjoyed a colorful career in the arts—as a platinum selling rapper, a 5,000 year old genie, and most recently, a festival dominating DJ. However, if DJ Diesel can bring Jack Ü back together, that might be his greatest feat to date. For now though, we can at least expect to revel in another What a Time to Be Alive moment when Shaq and Diplo are unveil whatever it is they’re working on.
