Skrillex had a quiet start to 2018, but the back half of the year has witnessed his return to the spotlight — and it appears there are no plans on stopping in sight. His Dog Blood project with Boys Noize recently resurfaced on Instagram and on the Buku Music + Arts Project lineup, he recently collaborated with Justice, and now he’s going in a whole different direction in producing for Square Enix and Disney’s game collaboration, Kingdom Hearts III.
Specifically, the crossover star worked alongside Hikaru Utada to create the Kingdom Hearts III theme song, which is featured in the newly released opening trailer for the game. The game is set across a vast array of Disney and Pixar-imagined worlds, and follows the journey of Sora — a young boy and unknowing heir to a spectacular power. Sora is joined by Donald Duck and Goofy to stop an evil force known as the Heartless from invading and overtaking the universe.
Utada and Skrillex’s collaboration is titled “Face My Fears,” and the track is outside Skrillex’s typical atmosphere of cutting notes and hard drops. Instead, softer soundscapes and bubbly synth combinations make for the perfect backdrop for the video game’s storyline.
Here’s a sneak peek at how the epic adventure begins
Don Diablo is taking his relationship with Disney one step further, announcing a special Halloween performance at Disneyland’s Paris amusement park. The Dutch producer and DJ will fittingly take over the Star Wars section of the park for his performance, following a clothing collaboration with the franchise earlier in 2018.
Don Diablo has been making it a point to DJ some impressive events this year, most recently live streaming a sunset performance from a yacht in one of Ibiza’s most iconic vistas. And Disneyland’s European location is bulking up their presence in the dance music hemisphere, boasting this booking that follows a festival that launched in 2017 called Electroland. Here’s to hoping the amusement park’s Los Angeles and Orlando locations follow suit and jump into the dance event space soon.
OWSLA founder and prolific gamer, Skrillex, has been tapped by Kingdom Hearts to help create the theme song for their forthcoming third installment of the game.
Skrillex has been a devoted fan of the action role-play video game—which was originally launched by Disney and Square Enix back in 2002—for years, posting a still of the characters to his Instagram back in 2016.
The theme track, dubbed “Face My Fears,” is to be co-written by Poo Bear, as well as J-pop queen, Utada Hikaru, who championed the Kingdom Hearts instant-classic, “Simple and Clean,” (originally written for her Japanese audience as “Hikari”) more than 10 years ago. It’s unclear if Skrillex’s amped-up, bass-friendly bearings will pervade into the new theme; but nonetheless, the dubstep pioneer’s affinity for gamey sound design renders him an exemplary candidate for the task.
Following the release of his well-received sophomore album Joytime II, DJ/producer Marshmello fittingly linked up with Disney in a brand new music video for his hit single “Fly.”
The video— which debuted June 23 on Disney Channel during a showing of The Incredibles — is a brief revival of the classic animated series DuckTales, featuring fan favorites Donald Duck, Scrooge Mcduck, Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby up to their usual antics.
The part animated-part live action clip takes the gang crashing into an unknown planet in deep space where they encounter an interesting alien life-form…who can DJ?
