Crystal Skies showcase their electronic sensibilities on resplendent new EP, ‘Constellations’

Crystal Skies showcase their electronic sensibilities on resplendent new EP, ‘Constellations’DSC 6121

Give virtually any cut from Crystal Skies‘ catalog a spin, and the suitability of Ophelia Records for the electronic duo will assuredly be apparent. From its luxuriant, layered melodies to its light flirtation with psy-trance (see “On My Own”) to its potent kisses of bass, Constellations brings the synchronicity of Crystal Skies’ sound with Ophelia’s into sharper focus.

In the time that has followed its February 2018 inception, Seven Lions‘ imprint has gained repute for its immersive releases, which routinely marry bass, dubstep, and psytrance elements with emotive chord progressions and lyrical content. Constellations easily fits into this broader aesthetic. The successor to 2017’s Dichotomy, Crystal Skies’ Constellations arrives as a five-cut exploration of electronic texture that is audible in the strings that provide the poised opening to “Release Me” and the resounding bass that explodes at “Feels Right” and “One More Night’s” drops.

The lyrically expressive character of Constellations‘ inclusions tug ever so gently at the heartstrings as the project’s enveloping, larger than life production creates a sense of sonic fullness. Given the EP’s title, it might seem a syrupy cliché to call Constellations a starry showing, but that’s exactly what is is.

Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA managing editor Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic—to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery—DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.

Grabbitz‘s latest release is an appearance on Ultra Music for the guitar-laden “Roam With You.” His heart-wrenching voice guides listeners through an emotive introductory verse before launching into a dramatic chorus. The second verse finds the artist harmonizing with himself to further the wistful tone of the piece.

Another Buffalo native, Snow-Key, takes to Future Vibes for a vibrant and powerful future bass-inspired piece, “716.” Likely a nod to the area code of that western corner of New York, “716” comes at the listener swinging after a relaxing introduction. Trippy bass and synth punches wallop the eardrums in an unexpected and enticing way, drawing the listener deeper into the dynamic world the artist has crafted.

Seven LionsOphelia Records plays host to Crystal Skies‘ newest set of tunes: the five-track Constellations EP. The duo have tapped collaborators like Satellite Empire, Gallie Fisher, and RUNN for the EP, and songs like “On My Own” prove that the EP is a gorgeous collection of songs. “Incredibly proud and excited to show you guys this EP,” the duo note in the EP’s description. “Some of our favorite music we’ve ever made and we hope you guys think so too.”

Sofi Tukker have remixed Laurent Wolf and Eric Carter’s 2008 classic, “No Stress”—something that seems to be a career highlight for duo member Tucker Halpern. “When I first fell in love with dance music and started to learn how to DJ, I remember the first ever playlist I made and ‘No Stress’ was on it,” he says in a press release. “I remember being so excited to play it in my first ever set, and it went OFF.” Their rendition is a groovy, up-to-date interpretation, allowing fans of the original to relive the original in a fun new way.

SNBRN comes at New Music Friday hot with a new collaboration with 1993, “DMs.” As sultry as ever, the producer has whipped up an irresistibly deep beat to pair with hazy vocals from 1993. While the vocals may sound passive, the lyrics are feisty, claiming “I got million-dollar deals in my DMs.”

Above & Beyond release a powerful remix pack featuring No Mana and Crystal Skies

Above & Beyond release a powerful remix pack featuring No Mana and Crystal SkiesAbove And Beyond

Live from Hong Kong, Above & Beyond marked their Group Therapy 300 edition with a special set. Featured within the performance was the celestial “There’s Only You,” featuring Zoë Johnston. The club mix and extended club mix were released earlier this year off their Common Ground Companion EP, and now, a remix project has also been revealed with reworks from No Mana and Crystal Skies.

No Mana also shared an extended version of his club thumper for those mesmerized by the gritty synth that sparks between arpeggiated high ends and contrasting harmonies strung together in lower octaves. The No Mana play runs with tech-house and techno appeal, plastering the four-on-the-floor rhythm with the aforementioned melodies.

Crystal Skies keeps in the trance lane during the introduction with an extra focus on chord progressions and varying melodies. The slow build creates this immense energy that when released produces a strong future bass melody with a dubstep backing.

Seven Lions and Crystal Skies coalesce on ‘Sojourn’

Seven Lions‘ most recent release recruits Crystal Skies for a collaboration that has long been a staple of Seven Lions’ live sets: “Sojourn.” The melodic joint product is out now via Seven Lions’ own imprint, Ophelia Records, which has previously hosted several Crystal Skies productions in the past, like “Carbon” and “Never Change.” Streaming the track proves an experiential endeavor for the listener, as Seven Lions and Crystal Skies guide the listener through a lush cacophony of high energy synths, which comprise the single’s opening.

The bed of synths mounts with upbeat optimism, to develop into a spirited drop that unexpectedly plunges deeper, to permit growling dubstep to enter the musical picture. Dubstep, however, is not the sole subgenre that Seven Lions and Crystal Skies engage in “Sojourn.” The sonic progression of “Sojourn” takes a psytrance turn before gently fading out, in what is a blissfully soft landing for the animated showing.

Crystal Skies enamor with first releases on Seven Lions’ Ophelia Records

Crystal Skies enamor with first releases on Seven Lions’ Ophelia RecordsNever Change Artwork

DJ duo Crystal Skies, comprised of Britian Holcomb and Aaron Dawson, have made their debut on Seven LionsOphelia Records with the release of the single “Never Change,” and the B Side, “Carbon.”

“Never Change” opens with sultry vocals featuring Gallie Fisher. The track seamlessly emulates Seven Lions’ signature style with its melodic bass breaks juxtaposed with ethereal vocals. The track finds a way to stand out amidst the clutter of what is now an overdone “melodic bass” category, thanks to a catchy spark that keeps the tune in the listener’s head far after the song’s conclusion.

Their second release, which has come out alongside “Never Change,” is much darker in nature and features pulsing dubstep notes and a monstrous undertone that rises and falls as the song progresses.

Crystal Skies have proven they are a duo to take note of, and with a strong start on Ophelia Records, there will likely only be more to expect from the artists in the year to come.
