Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA music editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic — to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery — DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.


Since he started releasing music again at the beginning of last year, Party Ghost has been on a roll with originals. Each one’s been quite varied in style, tied together with his signature dark and somewhat glitchy vibe. “Kill,” released in early April, slams its listener with deep, reverberating bass — much like his most recent: “Phantom.” This stormy, brooding vibe is executed perfectly in “Phantom,” though it’s more subdued than its April predecessor. “In the year 2145 the world is ran by Spectre Industries,” Party Ghost notes in the song description. “The story begins with Phantom.”


Ryan Browne has been consistently wreaking havoc on the dance music world with fiery remixes and originals that put a hardcore twist on tracks like Krewella‘s “Alive” and Alison Wonderland‘s “Messiah.” In his latest, a cover of the classic “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada, Browne whips out the drum sticks for a powerful take on the 2007 classic, mixing in elements of hardstyle and dubstep for a rendition that’s not for the faint of heart.


Armada powerhouse Armin Van Buuren has followed up his mid-April “Therapy” with the release of a funk-injected remix from Throttle. The Melbourne artist has made a name for himself with groovy hits like his take on “Hit the Road Jack” and his remix of Earth, Wind & Fire’s iconic “September.” His “Therapy” remix looks to be another stellar addition to his discography, as he adds a classic disco vibe to James Newman’s vocals.


There are few things I love more than the mixing of genres. German drum & bass duo Neonlight have put a VIP spin on one of their own tracks, combining gorgeous orchestral elements, soaring electric guitar and a drum & bass rhythm for a formidable four-minute venture. Its action-packed, cinematic feel is bolstered by hefty bass and dramatic builds that leave the listener wanting more as the synths peter out at the end.


Fresh off a four-track NEST HQ EP, Canadian duo Chuurch have come back with a sultry remix of REZZ and 13‘s celebrated collaboration, “DRUGS!” Digging into the style they call “lean bass,” the pair have crafted a remix saturated with wobbles and weighty bass. REZZ and 13’s haunting melody drifts in and out of the remix, allowing the duo to carry it through while adding their own unique twist.

Made Event‘s titanic New York-based festival, Electric Zoo, is celebrating its tenth birthday this Labor Day Weekend, August 31st–September 2nd. To mark the momentous double-digit occasion, the wildlife-themed event has added two more headlining artists in Alesso and Tiësto to join the star-studded cast of talent that already tops the 2018 bill: KaskadeMarshmelloMartin Garrix, and Virtual Self.

Other notable acts joining on phase two include: Alexander Lewis, Bonnie x Clyde, Boogie T, Chris Lorenzo, Chuurch, Crankdat, Destructo, DNMO, Dubfire, G Jones, Habstrakt, Jauz, Kayzo, Lost Frequencies, Luzcid, Medasin, Party Favor, Petey Clicks, Space Jesus, Spencer Brown, Squnto, Stööki Sound, Whipped Cream, and YehMe2.

Electric Zoo’s ‘Big 10’ birthday bash will feature additional stages curated by Anjunabeats, Deadbeats, Hyperhouse, and Sunday School.

​Zeds Dead share full lineup for 5th annual Red Rocks event, ‘DEADROCKS’

Zeds Dead are bringing their annual Deadrocks show to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, and for their fifth occasion, the boys are surely pulling out all the stops. The two-day event boasts a hefty list of line-up support, with G JonesEkaliPsymbionicMad Zach and Deadbeats Records artist DNMO on July 2nd, and RuskoEPROMHabstraktUm..,  and Chuurch on July 3rd.

Over the years, the Deadrocks event has become a sold-out family affair for Zeds Dead fans as they travel from all corners of the US to ascend upon one of the world’s most prestigious outdoor venues. Why? Because “DC” and “Hooks,” as the boys’ individual nicknames go, have been known to bring out surprise guests, premiere unreleased music, and unleash top-notch visual production upon their audience. One can bet the 2018 gathering will take no short cuts in celebrating Deadrocks’ fifth birthday, either.

Chuurch – One Mind

Calgary production duo, Chuurch, comprised of Justin MacLean and Jeff Wilson, have been injecting their experimental “lean bass” in electronic/hip-hop spheres for years under various aliases, including Makemdef and EviCition. However their joint venture has been heavily endorsed as of late by scene stalwarts like Zeds Dead, through their Deadbeats label which released their distortion-heavy “Purple Ghost,” as well as their official remix of ZD’s “Where The Wild Things Are.”

Now, the enigmatic double team have geared up for another high-caliber release, this time with the notorious NEST imprint to deliver “One Mind.” The minimal, yet bass-heavy track is outlined by an aggressive, deliberate beat accompanied by sinister, though playful, vocal samples, and a teeter-tottering synth pattern.

The duo describe their sound as “familiar, but you don’t know why, like déjà vu.” Their fans have coined the term “lean bass” for Chuurch’s music — something the duo are glad has stuck. “It’s also a good way to describe how the crowd looks dancing to our music,” MacLean and Wilson said. “They just kind of lean into the bass and roll with it.”

Chuurch music like “One Mind” is comprised with a live setting in mind. “We think the best way for people to get a sense of our sound is in the living setting, so for the last two years we’ve been focused on making tracks that work for certain parts, telling stories with our sound,” MacLean and Wilson said. “Knowing something will work as a good intro or putting together edits of our own tracks to heighten the tension in the middle of a set, we’re always looking for ways to amplify the live show.”

Following releases with This Ain’t Bristol and Perfect Driver, Chuurch is saddling up for 2018 EPs with both Deadbeats and Nest – the latter set for release March 23.
