Outside Lands has revealed the 2018 lineup for its 11th installment in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park August 10-12.
Following a fervent 2017 edition of Gorillaz, The Who, and Metallica headlining, 2018 boasts a hefty onslaught of acts, and although the headliners see earlier appearances in the festival season — The Weeknd at Coachella and Janet Jackson at both Panorama and FYF Fest — the lineup remains rife with talent and excitement.
Los Angeles duo Oliver — Vaughn Oliver and Oliver Goldstein — shared their remix of Beck‘s track, “Up All Night,” the third single from his thirteenth studio album, Colors.
Adding their own invigorating synth colors to the track, Oliver reinvents the track into a robotic counterpart, instilling a sense of manufacture to its central elements. It’s danceable, friendly, and a forthright effort from the duo. The remix pays due homage to Beck’s lush vocal abilities while shifting into futuristic mode, with the end result entirely delectable.
Oliver released their otherworldly album, Full Circle, back in September.
Flume‘s 2016 sophomore studio LP, Skin was unanimously hailed as a triumph that not only built on his self-titled debut album from four years prior, but cemented the young Australian producer’s reputation as one of the brightest music makers in the world right now. The project brought in firepower from the likes of Kai, Vince Staples, AlunaGeorge, and Beck, all complementing Flume’s amorphous, fluid creations, and ultimately snagged the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2017. However, of all the ensuing remixes, reworks, and covers that were inspired from Skin, the Chamber Orchestra at Westridge School in Pasadena, California’s rendition of “Tiny Cities” stands head and shoulders above the rest.
Covering all of the original’s complex intricacies, the orchestra delves into the song’s bold strings, precise piano notes, and fleeting percussive accents. Even without Beck’s syncopated delivery and vocoded topline, this acoustic version of “Tiny Cities” is a justified homage to one of Flume’s top masterworks.
