The sophomore release from AMTRAC‘s sophomore LP has hit the airwaves and brought with it an unexpected collaboration.

The Kentucky-born producer has tapped Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs for his forthcoming album’s second release, “Radical,” and it’s a true treat for the eardrums. These producers’ styles mesh so cohesively, making “Radical” a dreamy, seamless period of relaxation. With a mellow beat, drifting melodies, and calming vocals from TEED, this single is sure to further excite listeners who eagerly await AMTRAC’s upcoming Oddyssey.

It’s been nearly a decade since the producer’s debut LP, Came Along, which arrived in 2011. In mid-December, the producer announced that he’d signed with RCA Records and that his second album was on its way with the release of “Between the Lines.” Oddyssey is coming in early 2020, though a set date has yet to be announced.

AMTRAC and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs are a match made in heaven. Leading up to the release of his sophomore LP, Oddysey, AMTRAC has been trickling tunes out slowly to his fan base, including December’s “Between The Lines.” “Radical” makes a stunning follow-up to its predecessor, with dreamy melodies and infectious vocals from TEED.

Following the release of the Ship Wrek remix of “Problems” in November, A R I Z O N A have revealed a new remix from ASYLUM: a Cruise Control rendition of “Still Alive.” This groovy slow-burner has a slightly darker tone to it than the upbeat original, with deeper vocals and melancholy chords.

Last Island looks to be kicking off the new year in fine form by releasing the appropriately titled “New Things.” His first work of 2020 slows things down a bit, as the Scottish producer concocts a funky downtempo tune that would be right at home in a sunrise set.

Madeon‘s Good Faith has been remixed into oblivion since its release in mid-November, but artists continue to develop new and refreshing takes on the LP’s 10 tracks. One of the latest of these is camoufly, who’s added his own “kawaii bounce” spin on “All My Friends.” It’s sparkly, joyous, and smile-inducing.

Former Hero lends his thoughtful creative process to San Holo‘s “surface” via a new remix. The UK producer spends the majority of the track’s introduction building a serene soundscape for the listener to bask in. What’s unexpected, though, is the burst of energy just after the two-minute mark.

When I started using SoundCloud in early 2014, I made playlists weekly (read: obsessively). I’ve backed off a bit in recent years, but I still take time to collect songs for my yearly “best of” playlist, which I create every January and add to throughout the year. In late December for the past five years, I’ve narrowed it down to my 50 favorite releases of the year. They range from hard-hitting anthems to serene soundscapes, which truly sums up my music preferences.

In 2019, I was fortunate enough to premiere a few of my absolute favorite tracks of the year, including The Midnight‘s remix of SYML‘s “Clean Eyes,” Com Truise‘s remix of Gold Fields‘ “Waterfall,” and Essenger‘s “After Dark.” (A big thank you to all the artists who choose DA as their platform to reveal new music—we love you!)

2019 was a stellar year for drum ‘n’ bass, exhibited in tracks like Kove‘s “Le Retour,” Koven‘s “Love Wins Again,” 1991‘s “Guiding Light,” Metrik‘s “Hackers,” and so many more. The genre took some fun twists and turns, which fans heard in Mat Zo‘s Latin-infused “Games” and Sub Focus‘ earth-shattering remix of Bring Me The Horizon‘s “Mother Tongue.”

This year saw the arrival of a slew of monstrous collaborations—some unexpected and some that simply made sense. Regardless, tracks like Sullivan King and Grabbitz‘s “Crazy As You” and Delta Heavy and Zeds Dead‘s “Lift You Up” blew my mind. I was delighted when Fox Stevenson and Feint teamed up on a remix of the former’s “Out My Head,” since it flawlessly combined both their styles.

Speaking of Fox Stevenson, the UK producer released his highly anticipated album, killjoy, this year, and it’s a dynamic journey through all sides of the producer’s capabilities. Goldroom wowed me with his double-sided, multi-faceted Plunge/Surface effort, which has quite a story behind it. I had a hard time picking a favorite from A R I Z O N A‘s nostalgic Asylum LP, which is gorgeous and heart-wrenching from start to finish. I also need to mention what was likely my most-listened-to album of the year, which isn’t on SoundCloud: Ollie Wride’s Thanks in Advance. It’s gold. I lived in the aforementioned albums this year, and I’m so grateful to the artists who made them for sharing their creativity with the world.

Without further ado, here are my 50 favorite songs of 2019, in no particular order.

As 2019 comes to a close, many producers look to the new year for new beginnings and—if fans are lucky—a whole slew of new tunes. This looks to be true for AMTRAC, who’s revealed the debut single from his forthcoming sophomore album, landing in early 2020.

“Between The Lines” is a heavenly preview of what’s been nearly nine years in the making. AMTRAC recorded his own vocals for this one and opens the track with a dramatic piano melody, thrumming bassline, and infectious lyrics. A sparkling synth theme leads the listener into the more dance music-oriented segment of the song, demonstrating the artist’s production range.

“It’s been a lot of trial and error, things coming together and falling apart, not really feeling comfortable with it,” the producer told Billboard about the forthcoming album. “I finally got to a place where it feels like it needs to get out there, because I can’t just keep working on it forever.”

Oddyssey is due out in early 2020.

AMTRAC‘s newest is a synth-filled sparkling venture, packed to the brim with beautiful melodies and irresistible vocals. The RCA Records venture is an impeccable combination of modern elements and nostalgic twists. It’s everything a house music fan could dream of, but it’s in a league of its own, categorized under the simple name of AMTRAC.

In early November, Grabbitz revealed his newest Ultra single: “Roam With You,” a tune soaked in emotion and vulnerability. A month later, the Brooklyn native has released a club mix of the original tune, incorporating a hastened tempo and more of notable beat in the chorus. This new interpretation opens the song up to new possibilities, making it more accessible to those crafting club sets.

Tycho‘s newest single leads to anything but its namesake: “Stress.” The relaxed single finds its place amongst the “No Stress” instrumental version and the original July release “No Stress” with Saint Sinner”—but in an unexpected way. It’s warm and breezy, embracing the listener with its enveloping synth work and dreamy melodies.

It’s been more than five years since Uppermost released the original version of “Night Walk.” But here, many years later, the artist has blessed us with a new interpretation of the track. Uppermost has reimagined the track, giving it a deeper, darker feel. It’s still the contemplative, dark piece many have grown to love—just a newer take on it.

Late last week, Matt Van released a new single, “Conifer.” The winter-ready piece took the listener inwards, encouraging them to look inward. Just one week later, Direct and Mr FijiWiji teamed up to concoct their own translation of the tune. One could argue that it’s an even more reflective construction of “Conifer,” incorporating others’ interpretations of the already-beautiful piece.

Honey & Badger and kramder burst in, guns blazing, on their latest collaboration, “Da Pinte.” This new CONFESSION release seems to be all power at first, but upon introducing a merry piano theme, it’s apparent this trio of artists know how to combine forceful beat with a groovy melody. Between the vocals, pounding bass, and infectious melody, “Da Pinte” has been stuck in my head all week.

Last Island‘s new EP is a work of art. The Scottish artist just unleashed his Sustain EP, which spans five tracks and sounds best when listened to cohesively. “Emerie’s Cave” serves as a clear introduction, leading into a whole collection of some of his best work, including the final track, “Let Stars Fall.” “I wanted to create a euphoric and synth rich sound with the feeling of traveling through into a new world,” he says of the compilation. And that he did.

Astrale has taken on the task of covering and reworking The Midnight‘s formative “Kids.” Starring Essenger on vocals, this duo have revamped the bittersweet nostalgia of the original into a piece that’s fully their own. The initial two minutes feel like an anticipatory build, dropping into a heavier bed of synths for a dramatic ending of the song.

Groovy beats and funky piano melodies abound on AMTRAC‘s new release, “Formal Disco.” Released via his own Openers Records, AMTRAC shines on this latest track, seamlessly melding a smooth bassline with an irresistible melody. He kicked off his 2019 with the more subdued “Just” in February, but he readies himself for the summer months with this more upbeat original, which he says is a “long overdue follow up” to 2017’s “Informal Disco.”

Nora En Pure consistently delivers a sweet-to-the-ears sonic experience, and her latest is no exception. “Birthright,” released in original club mix and radio edit formats, features a serene piano melody, propped up by a low-key backbone of percussion. At seven minutes long, the club mix is primed to serve as a soothing outro for a night of dancing or simply bring a listener peace during a stressful time.

As part of ODESZA‘s newest set of A Moment Apart remixes, Chet Porter has put an ethereal spin on album standout, “Line of Sight.” Louis Futon flips James Blake’s “Retrograde” in his newest release, and YehMe2 takes on the Spice Girls’ iconic “Wannabe” in his freshest remix. BIJOU has released some new house heat on Insomniac Records, and Walker & Royce have done the same on HotBoi Records with “Word.” The Knocks reveal the latest to remix a New York Narcotic track: Wankelmut with a funky new take on “Retrograded.” DUCKY thrills with a new EP, and formidable Swarm puts a dark twist on Roniit’s “Visceral.” Dustycloud returns to Tchami‘s CONFESSION imprint with “Reckless,” and Braxton channels nighttime vibes with a new Anjuna release, “When The Sun Goes Down.” Sweekuh taps Love, Alexa and Faze on a new single, “Where Do We Let Go” and R3HAB turns the energy up on Mabel’s “Don’t Call Me Up.”

Three years in the making, KOAN Sound have unveiled a single from their forthcoming debut album, Polychrome. Also making a comeback is Haywyre, who’s released his first single in two years: the disco-infused “Tell Me.” Luttrell returns to Anjunadeep for “Out of Me,” a mystical venture that propels the listener deep into outer space. Today’s mix to start you on your day is a reminder to artists large or small everywhere that sometimes, the best way to refresh yourself creatively is to dive into the music that personally inspires them. It does not necessarily need to be the music someone like AMTRAC — the artist behind this “Motorway Mix” — consistently makes, either.

The new mix is an exploration that can keep anyone’s feet grounded with an hour-long blend of tunes. Instead of the underground deep and tech house we usually get from the American DJ and producer, this mix is follows a whole new tempo and sound. Journey through the mix and peek at the sounds that comprise AMTRAC’s influences: groovy nu disco riffs, acidic retro electronica, and funky soul. Like the title suggests, this mix is probably best paired with an extensive open highway drive, but at its best is a soundtrack to personal reflection for both the listener and the artist at work.
