Trombone takes center stage in Alexander Lewis’ new hip-hop EP

In February 2017, Alexander Lewis released the first track from what would later become the seven-track Omni EP. The iconic “March” track has since garnered more than 1 million SoundCloud streams, wowing listeners with its uniquely bold trombone stabs. In the many months since that initial release, the musician has continued to unveil pieces of the EP, including the intense “Clockwise” with Nick Row.

Now, Omni is out in full. It includes collaborations with fellow brass enthusiasts Brasstracks, rappers S’natra and Armani White, and many more. Smooth vocals, hip-hop beats, and bright instrumentals unite in this beautifully genre-smashing collection of originals.

Made Event‘s titanic New York-based festival, Electric Zoo, is celebrating its tenth birthday this Labor Day Weekend, August 31st–September 2nd. To mark the momentous double-digit occasion, the wildlife-themed event has added two more headlining artists in Alesso and Tiësto to join the star-studded cast of talent that already tops the 2018 bill: KaskadeMarshmelloMartin Garrix, and Virtual Self.

Other notable acts joining on phase two include: Alexander Lewis, Bonnie x Clyde, Boogie T, Chris Lorenzo, Chuurch, Crankdat, Destructo, DNMO, Dubfire, G Jones, Habstrakt, Jauz, Kayzo, Lost Frequencies, Luzcid, Medasin, Party Favor, Petey Clicks, Space Jesus, Spencer Brown, Squnto, Stööki Sound, Whipped Cream, and YehMe2.

Electric Zoo’s ‘Big 10’ birthday bash will feature additional stages curated by Anjunabeats, Deadbeats, Hyperhouse, and Sunday School.

TOKiMONSTA – Don’t Call Me ft Yuna (Alexander Lewis Remix)

Alexander Lewis has done it again, this time adding his smooth production touch to TOKiMONSTA‘s “Don’t Call Me” featuring Yuna.

The original, which came out in summer 2017, featured a sultry R&B vibe contrasted with choppy vocal elements that tucked it in comfortably with some of the EDM trends at the time. Lewis has taken the steamy atmosphere up a notch by adding mesmerizing layers of synths and a subtle trap beat. He builds his instrumentals around Yuna’s polished vocals, letting them take center stage and continue to drive the original message of the song.

Lewis’ remix is part of TOKiMONSTA’s Lune Rouge Remixed compilation, which also features reworks from Felix Cartal, Sofi Tukker, and more.

After countless hours spent honing his sound, KRANE released his debut LP, Fallout, in October 2017. The 10-track album is the culmination of years of listening to and creating music, and was met with high praise from fans, fellow musicians and publications around the world. The producer has followed up the massive release with an accompanying cross-country tour. We caught up with KRANE to hear how the tour is going so far and what’s coming up in 2018.


What can attendees of the FALLOUT tour expect from your shows?

This is the most me performances to date. Tons of old and new KRANE, and a lot of exclusive edits, remixes and unreleased tunes. The sets are dynamic, and don’t just stay within one kind of sound. MYRNE, Slumberjack and Alexander Lewis are all incredible performers as well, and we’ll have a few surprises on stage for people as well. Have also worked to create a new set of visuals to accompany the music – overall I think people should be very excited.

What are you most excited for with this tour? Any dates you’re particularly looking forward to?

I mean, I can’t pick any one city. Because this is my first headline tour, I feel like the crowds have been more exuberant, open-minded and just wanted to have fun compared to any prior show I’ve played. The energy has been incredible and Im just excited to bring the show to as many people as I can. Though.. if I had to pick a fav it might be Austin, because I get to gorge myself on BBQ the next day…

What has reception of your debut LP been like in the few months since its release?

Above and beyond what I could have hoped for – really. I was worried with putting out so much content at once it’d invite a lot of critique – and while there has been some, it’s filled me with excitement to hear how much it’s resonated with my fans. It’s very heartwarming, and I think people are finding their own story within the album and that’s fantastic.

After part one of the FALLOUT tour wraps up, what are your plans for the remainder of 2018?

More collabs, more remixes, another LP or album (in the works), and just finding more and more ways to serve my listeners, who are truly the most valuable part of this whole project.

When TroyBoi‘s “Flamez” came out last August, fans were instantly drawn in by the infectious, heavy horns in the introduction. Though the track tapers off into a more trap-based tune as it progresses, the horns serve as an iconic lead-in to the Left is Right song.

Months later, trombone guru Alexander Lewis has honed in on the horn part of “Flamez.” He’s remixed the track into a horn-centric anthem, booming with both bass and intoxicating, brassy stabs. With a slight key change and a shift in focus, Lewis has given “Flamez” a praise-worthy reworking.

Dexter’s Beat Laboratory is a weekly collection of songs from DA music editor and staff writer Robyn Dexter. With a taste that can only be described as eclectic — to say nothing of a name that lends itself to punnery — DA is happy to present a selection of tracks personally curated by Dexter for your listening pleasure.


What kind of fellow St. Louisan would I be if I didn’t start off this week’s Beat Lab by hyping one of the city’s finest producers? Notaker‘s intricate production skills grow more fine-tuned with each release, and his newest track is no exception. “Who I Am” came out on Oct. 2 on Monstercat, and the producer shared his extended cut of the song a day later. Being a fan of extended cuts due to the opportunity they present for the artist to expand on the initial concept, it’s the one I’ve chosen to share here.


Alexander Lewis is such a unique artist. His incorporation of live instruments like the trombone in his music makes him a standout in the dance music community. His latest, “Off Guard,” lives up to its name. Lewis impresses with an almost tropical sound in this one, integrating bold, brassy horns as a backdrop to beautiful female vocals.


Avicii‘s “Without You” has been everywhere since its release nearly two months ago. Heck, it was even on Snapchat, featured with the user’s dancing Bitmoji. Fareoh has swooped in with a remix of his own, putting more of a fun, upbeat twist on the original’s progressive house vibe. “Avicii was one of my biggest inspirations when I first began learning music production,” Fareoh says in the track description. “I’ve played multiple shows with him over the years, and truly admire the space he created in electronic music.”


Every single STéLOUSE release is unique. The producer switches up his style constantly, making each release more exciting than the last. His latest, a collaboration with vocalist Bryce Fox, is a downtempo song with attitude-packed lyrics about love lost. It’s overflowing with passion from every angle, and I can’t stop listening to it. His EP out Oct. 20 is sure to thrill.


Matroda‘s “On My Mind” in its initial form was a deep house track out on Heldeep Records. The producer has released it again in an entirely contrasting form: drum & bass. Though it’s short at under three minutes, it’s an action-packed, energetic take on the original. It’s always fascinating to me when artists rework their own music, and this one’s left me captivated.

Sinjin Hawke – Onset (KRANE & Alexander Lewis Remix)

Though Sinjin Hawke has been producing music for the better part of a decade, the incredibly talented producer only pierced the consciousness of the larger dance community when he released the pristine EP First Opus earlier this year. For some, the record was a glint in the void left by a sorely missed Rustie and other “post-trap” and “post-dubstep” artists recently recruited by the higher ups of the hip hop community.

Among those inspired by by the enigmatic release are KRANE and Alexander Lewis, two bass-loving maestros known for their dynamic remixes and subtle, layered sound. Together, the duo have taken on one of the most gripping tracks on Hawke’s breakout EP, “Onset.”

“I was blown away by Sinjin Hawke’s use of Orchestral instruments in his latest project “First Opus”, something that I’ve inherently done with my music and the use of trombone,” said Lewis. “Onset instantly impressed me and it felt natural that I should take a stab at putting my spin on an already amazing tune.”

“There’s always been this common practice of how remixers go about wanting to remix something- like its a measure of the original artist and their reputation, or how hyped up they are at the moment,” said KRANE of the remix effort. “I really just wanted to move away from that and hopefully do justice to something I found to be really special and different.”

Together, they’ve done just that — layering Hawke’s lush original track with a complex net of percussive and synth sounds. it’s a stellar effort from the duo that’s more inventive than pure homage, but somehow pays perfect respect to the original track.

Alexander Lewis and Brasstracks take on Kanye West’s ‘All of the Lights’

Everyone knows the iconic horns that lead into Kanye West‘s “All of the Lights,” which usher in the rest of the song like a grand announcement – and appropriately so, given the song’s triple platinum status.

Now, Alexander Lewis and Brasstracks have reworked “All of the Lights” by allowing these horns to take over the entire song with a funky, soulful edge.

The duo released their instrumental collaboration on Friday, June 16, just in time for the weekend. Trombone player Lewis and Brasstracks’ Ivan Jackson, a trumpet player, knew the original song was begging to have a brass cover. Lewis recorded the main idea and sent it over to Jackson, who turned the trumpet part around the following day, according to a Billboard interview.
