Just like Dancing Astronaut rounds up 25 of the biggest songs of the week for the Hot 25 Spotify playlist each New Music Friday, Lunar Lunes serves as a landing pad for SoundCloud users who want a whole new dose of tunes to kick off the work week.

Perhaps March 25th’s biggest release is a fiery collaboration between CONFESSION‘s Tchami and Ibranovski by the name of “Omega.” DEVAULT puts his own mellow spin on Alessia Cara‘s “Out of Love,” and Oliverse cranks up the intensity on a remix of Emalkay’s “Fabrication.” Golf Clap keep things smooth and grooving with their new single, “Demo Tapes,” and Riggi & Piros join forces with MOTi for “Side 2 Side.” Delta Heavy reveal their 11-track Only In Dreams LP, featuring “Replicant” with KUURO, and CloZee puts her own worldly downtempo twist on Axel Thesleff’s “Eco.” Zack Martino takes on Armin van Buuren‘s “Lonely For You” with Bonnie McKee, and Sullivan King throws it back to 2005 with a hardcore remix of Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Grant returns to Monstercat for a contemplative new single, “Wishes,” and W&W and Maurice West link up on “Matrix.” MYRNE taps Sam Rui and Gentle Bones for “Call, Call Me,” and Amon Tobin previews his forthcoming studio album with the release of “Vipers Follow You.”

DEVAULT adds another high-profile remix to his slate of official remixes, this time in the form of his rendition on Alessia Cara‘s “Out of Love.” The producer shows he has mastered dark sonic foreshadowing as eerie chords lead into raw house notes, blending with stunning vocals to create a polarizing whole with his spin on “Out of Love.”

DEVAULT is known for a sound that can be all over the map. Whether he is producing hip-hop or tropical house, the producer manages to infuse his own unique and retro flair into his soundscapes. DEVAULT spoke about his remix in an official release, stating, “I was beyond thrilled to be given this opportunity to do a remix for Alessia, she’s so gifted. The goal was to take this vocal and give it more of a night drive feeling, and we created a small visual to connote that exact idea.”

Entercom recently announced their lineup for this year’s “I’m Listening” campaign — a live, commercial-free broadcast to raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention.

Set to air September 9 at 7:00am local time on live streams via the Radio.com app as part of National Suicide Prevention Week, the broadcast will feature a variety of music, film, and sports role models. The special will have call-in opportunities and an interactive website for listeners to share stories and discuss resources for help.

Influencers featured on the show this year are Alessia CaraBebe RexhaCharlie Puth, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Academy Award-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, Stone Temple Pilots, Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind and more.

After Chester Bennington died in 2017 from suicide, his bandmate, Mike Shinoda, released his first solo album, Post Traumatic, about his journey out of grief and darkness. He told Billboard, “In most parts of the world, suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. I hope that sharing my personal story, in music and conversation, helps open up the door to new discussions and awareness about mental health.”

Last year, the broadcast featured HalseyLogic, and Metallica. The iconic rock band said, “Talking about it is the most important thing.” Bassist Robert Trujillo reminded fans, “It’s not a sign of weakness to see a doctor when you are depressed.”

The special will be hosted by Seattle KISW-FM personality BJ Shea and, feature clinical psychologist and NowMattersNow.org CEO Dr. Ursula Whiteside as well as co-founder and executive director of Concussion Legacy Foundation, Dr. Chris Nowinksi. What are the larger implications of The Grammys steep ratings drop? [OP-ED]

By most accounts, the Grammy Awards in 2018 was a big swing, and a big miss. The ceremony’s ratings plummeted by nearly 25% according to Nielsen Media, dropping from last year’s 32.9 million viewers down to 19.8 million for its most recent iteration. While the evening’s results have come under under considerable scrutiny following the event, Bruno Mars’ sweep of all the major categories isn’t the sole reason that The Grammys effectively tanked in what should have been a memorable year for the Recording Academy. We can examine the ceremony’s numerous blunders, but it is also worth noting that the ways we consume media, and the ways we relate to and access our artists in 2018 have changed drastically — and The Grammys need to figure out how to keep from regressing.

First, let’s start at the tip of the iceberg, examining an advertisement-bloated three and a half hour industry circle-jerk. In an age where on-demand content is at our fingertips 24 hours a day, slimming this thing down is going to be necessary for it’s survival. HQ Trivia posted record numbers of nearly 1.6 million players 90 minutes into the award ceremony. If that’s not a testament to how our attention spans are directed in 2018, perhaps nothing is.

A noticeable lack of the usual headline makers this year — including Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber — also likely contributed to viewers’ even further numbed attention spans. But stuffy award shows across the board are suffering, and The Grammys aren’t immune. The Oscars, Golden Globes, and MTV Video Music Awards are all struggling with fluctuating viewership drop offs each year too, but the Recording Academy was uniquely poised this year to give some of the most important cultural figureheads of the moment the proper platforms and recognition they deserve in the divisive, tumultuous socio-political climate we’re currently a part of… and they fell flat on their face. 

Setting Jay Z and Kendrick‘s snubs aside (we’ll get back to those), how is it conceivably possible that “Despacito” did not win one of the three major awards it was nominated for? Simply put, the track is, for better or worse, one of the most consumed pieces of content in human history. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s record-shattering collaboration head and shoulders outsold and out-streamed any remote competitors last year in 50 countries, amassing a whopping 4 billion YouTube views, an RIAA diamond certification, and snagged a record 16 weeks atop the Billboard charts. So, beyond the incontrovertible numbers, an objective look at “Despacito” begs the question, why didn’t it win any Grammys? Perhaps the Recording Academy isn’t ready to recognize Latin pop in the ceremony’s top three major award categories like the rest of us clearly did?

Carlos Santana’s “Smooth,” released in 1999 followed by Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” in 2000 were the last two comparable comparisons, and both are of course in English. Nearly two decades later, the average American music and television consumer has switched things up significantly; and while The Grammys is clearly slow to catch up to the times, we’ve long been ready for something different.

Back to Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z. It has been 20 years since there were no white males nominated for Album of the Year. In a year when the American people were gifted with two thoughtfully created concepts of black excellence and deeply personal storytelling, Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic wins Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. It’s also worth noting that Mars’ album, for what it was, was terrific. That’s not in dispute. But was 24K Magic‘s quasi-Motown, mass appeal wedding reception fare worthy of drowning out two of the most impactful hip-hop albums in recent memory? No, definitely not. That simply doesn’t seem like the progress everyone wants to see.

Look at the Best New Artist category. Alessia Cara has been signed to Def Jam Records since 2014, SZA has been releasing music since 2012. Perhaps a designation like “breakthrough artists” would be more accurate. That fact that both of these immensely talented young women are just now being recognized comes off as painfully tone deaf. Is the Recording Academy voting innocuously — most likely. But the 2018 awards ceremony highlighted the fact that the Grammy Awards are unfortunately stuck way behind the times, and the effects undoubtedly showed.

Last year, Chance The Rapper challenged the status quo earning a grip of Gramophones for an album that technically didn’t sell a single unit. Now that’s progress. He changed the game — and viewership reflected it with the ceremony raking in it’s highest numbers in half a decade. We’re going to need more than Hillary Clinton reading a snippet of Fire and Fury next year; the audiences, consumers, and fans deserve it. If The Grammys want to continue to claim to be music’s real cultural barometer, make it for the people, not additional vanity for the music industry. Consider and recognize the music that truly deserves it most, represent social progress where possible, and try stepping out of the comfort zone — at the end of the day, that’s what really moves people.

I’ll start Volume 1 with a confession: I didn’t know the original version of this song when I heard this edit. Laszlo, an 18-year-old up-and-comer from The Netherlands, has continuously impressed with releases both on Monstercat and independently. He usually produces epic electro house tracks, so this smooth, sexy Post Malone rework was a bit unexpected. Lazslo toys with the vocals layered over slick synths and a melody that glides the listener effortlessly through the track. It’s completely refreshing, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to it since it came out on June 27.

(Note: I did finally go out and listen to the original. I much prefer Laszlo’s version).


Gareth Emery and Christina Novelli‘s “Concrete Angel‘ is an iconic example of the emotional beauty that permeates trance music. Celebrating the song’s 5-year anniversary, Emery released a set of remixes to “Concrete Angel” and among them was this perfect trance rework of the original track, masterfully done by ReOrder. It packs a harder punch than the original, but still maintains the initial integrity of the track. ReOrder’s trance beats are slightly more aggressive than Emery’s, but his builds are beautiful and soulful.


Drum & bass has a special place in my heart. Since Pendulum established my love of electronic music in 2010, I’ve always gone back to the genre-well in search of tracks that give me the same euphoric feeling songs like “Witchcraft” and “Watercolour” did when I heard them for the first time. When I first heard T & Sugah’s “Cast Away” three years ago, I got that same feeling. After following the Dutch duo’s music and loving everything they released, seeing a new track of theirs pop up was a thrill. “Sleepless” showcases the duo’s mastery of drum & bass with a swift beat that intensifies MVE’s vocals in the best way.


While browsing the latest content on SoundCloud’s feed, something unexpected cropped up: a new track from KDrew. KDrew has always made consistently solid music (c’mon, who doesn’t love “Last Train to Paradise” and “Summer Ashes“?) so it was interesting to see what his latest original track was like, especially since he hasn’t released new music in a while. With fun pitched vocals and a rushing trap-infused beat, “Back To You” marks KDrew’s triumphant return to the dance music world.


Since its release earlier this year, Zedd and Alessia Cara‘s hit “Stay” has, unsurprisingly, gotten a whole variety of remixes. Among these is a refreshing remix from producer Aylen. In a world where so many remixes sound the same, Aylen’s funky take on the track is catchy and new. He takes an otherwise mainstream-sounding track and pumps it up with a heightened tempo. Flawless harmonies line the bridge of the song, building up to a driving drop that begs shufflers to hit the dance floor and bust out their moves.

The title of Zedd’s biggest hit to date, “Stay,” has become somewhat ironic when evaluated in the context of the single’s enduring commercial success.

The Alessia Cara feature is currently charting its twenty-second week atop the Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart. Overseas, Stay has newly earned a triple-platinum certification in Australia as views on the official music video on YouTube surpass the forty-five-million mark. “Stay” the song has, and stay the song will, it seems.

A testament to Zedd’s talent as a DJ and producer, and an irresistible showcase of Cara’s vocal chops, Stay has gone on to capture the attention of John Mayer who covered the song on his July 26th show in Los Angeles as a part of Bud Light’s Dive Bar Tour. The performance, delivered at California’s Echoplex venue, is a brief deviation from Mayer’s current initiative, his “The Search For Everything” world tour.

After playing staples from his musical library like “Waiting on the World to Change,” John Mayer brought out a special guest to join him onstage during the show— none other than Alessia Cara. The singer songwriter dueted with Mayer on his 2006 hit, “Gravity,” but not before Cara and Mayer could link vocals for a cover of “Stay,” minus the synths of course.

Cara and Mayer divided the song’s verses, with Mayer lending his signature rasp to the tune’s second verse before playing the role of a background singer during the chorus as Cara once more assumed the lead. Mayer has long been known for his somewhat surprising and eclectic collaborations and this one hardly disappoints.

Zedd and Alessia Cara‘s chart-topping hit “Stay” gets a playful rework by Canadian producer Felix Cartal who adds sweeping synths and tropical house accents to the remix. In his new offering, Cartal flips Alessia’s vocals to coincide with his lush house production rework. Following his fresh remix of 90s hit “You Get What You Give,” the new track from Cartal is poised to complete summer playlists everywhere with its warm melodies and breezy vibe, giving an updated jolt to Zedd’s latest hit.

Felix Cartal is about to embark on his summer tour, with dates lined up across North America beginning on June 2 at Effex in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Check out his remix of “Stay” below.

Alessia Cara and Zedd are this week’s talk of the town, following their thrilling performance of “Stay” on the Season 12 finale of NBC’s The Voice.  Both Cara and the producer born Anton Zaslavski bring their stylistic dissimilarities together to form a unique dynamic that not too many artists can achieve — propelling  “Stay”  become one of the biggest records of 2017 thus far.
